theming desktop
lain is love · 2019-03-08 08:37
Hello, i want to theme my desktop (plasma+i3gaps) in some nice cyberpunk theme like the computers in sciencefiction movies but since cyberpunk game was announced it's really hard to find anything interesting in google images (or i am too stupid to think of other phrases). I want something simple but looking very cyberpunk. If you have any nice photo or idea i would be thankful for help. Thanks lainons for help!
(I can't think of theme cause i'm not gui designer but i like to theme desktop if i have some source that i can base my theme on)

I kinda like desktop themes with that suttle hint of being cyberpunk. So that it looks nice but is still practical. Here is my i3 setup, (you can see I am not a graphics designer either).
Also, just try searching "linux cyberpunk theme", plenty of inspiration there.
btw, /Δ/ might not quite be the right place for this thread.

Looks pretty cool. I might try to switch out the icons for something less generic-looking if I were you.

Looks pretty cool allthough don't you get the urge to shrink down those gaps to get a bit more space.

Also maybe a bit too much of the exact same color, maybe try some different tints of that blue.

I've always been curious about this, but I never knew how to start. Like, if I want to start by changing window borders or stuff like that, where do I even look for that? How do I into ricing, lainons?

There are 2 competing widget toolkits for open source desktops, GTK and QT.
Step 1 is figure out which one you want to theme (whichever one your current desktop environment uses might be a good start).
OP is using plasma, which is part of KDE and therefor uses QT.
Next step is to find some existing themes you like and install them
(QT) https://store.kde.org/
(GTK) https://www.gnome-look.org/
Then look at how they work and make tweaks until you're happy.
Last step is configure GTK to emulate your QT theme or vice versa.

How to start?
I basically started by browsing r/Unixporn a bunch. Actually no, that's a lie - I started from Deviantart of all places. When I used Windows there we a tonne of Rainmeter skins, Shell themes, etc on there. I always watned to "Customize" my computers - make then truly, mine.
So after I started to dabble in Linux then I found r/Unixporn, which is a pretty neat subreddit for all things *nix customization. Basically my process is to browse along until i find something I like, find their dotfiles, copy a few lines, edit them a bit.
Now I do my own soykaf from scratch, taking inspiration from posts now and then.
Some resources:
http://terminal.sexy/ - amazing colorscheme editor
r/Unixporn sidebar - screenshots
r/Unixart - for more some more 'tasteful' screenshots

Thank you! This is most appreciated, lainons! There's a lot of info that I can reach from those links and googling those terms <3
I wanted to do something about this for my laptop. I'll delve into it when I have more time.

Wow, this one reminds me of VA-11 Hall-A. I think because of the color scheme. IMO it might be a bit hard to read (I think those unames kinda blend with the parenthesis background) but it looks awesome! I love the font.
