Hi Lains! Which terminal emulator do you use? I'm currently looking for a new terminal emulator, because the standard Gnome terminal isn't really doing it for me and I've never really explored the other options that may be available. Do you have any recommendations?
Nemissa · 2019-02-27 13:07
I use urxvt in client/server mode. It is really quick and lightweight and still easy to use and set up

>>15873 I use qterminal. I don't know if I recommend it if you use Gnome. What are you looking for in a terminal ? I am not really sure if someone has actually done a detailed comparison of terminal emulators. I am aware of the following LWN series though https://lwn.net/Articles/749992/ https://lwn.net/Articles/751763/ Benchmarks from article available at https://github.com/anarcat/terms-benchmarks Older comparisons are available from https://martin.ankerl.com/2007/09/01/comprehensive-linux-terminal-performance-comparison/ https://lwn.net/Articles/88161/ as well as the following section on an awesome list https://github.com/k4m4/terminals-are-sexy#terminal-emulation-applications and the following list on the archlinux wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/List_of_applications#Terminal_emulators and the following list from Gentoo package database https://packages.gentoo.org/categories/x11-terms and https://www.linux-apps.com/search/projectSearchText/terminal+emulator/page/1 has at least >70 possible lesser known terminal emulators. I have used many terminal emulators, (over 15 different ones), but I don't really have any information in order to give you a recommendation, but I guess if you could start with roxterminal or lxterminal or several other lightweight gtk terminals if you used a GTK based desktop environment. If you have a specific feature set or requirement in mind, then it would easier to make a better recommendation.

>>15881 Thanks for the in-depth post! I'm busy trying Guake out at the moment (installed it about 20 minutes ago) and I love being able to toggle visibility so far. I'm very new to terminal usage, so I'm not even sure of what makes a good terminal or what I would want in it. I was mostly trying to see what people like in a terminal and what they use to get an idea of what could be useful in a terminal. I'll give your resources a read soon and see what I can glean from them! I suppose it would be best if I used multiple terminals, because some applications I use require a much larger window, vs the guake terminal which I can use for small, quick applications. I like being able to customise the appearance of my terminal a bit and I think tab completion for filenames are my two biggest wants at the moment. Thanks again for the comprehensive post!

>>15882 There are minimal differences between terminal emulators. You probably want to try a new shell, like zsh or fish, within your existing terminal, which will give you better tab completion and other such features. I use zsh with the xfce terminal.

If I was'nt restrained by the desire to have a nice and coherent looking enviroment, I would also try those new GPU accelerated terms, they not seem stable enough though. >>15882 >I like being able to customise the appearance of my terminal a bit and I think tab completion for filenames are my two biggest wants at the moment. Allmost all terms do have a way to change the colours and the font. Like >15888 says tab completion is made by the shell, if you use bash, you already have tab completion on any term. fish does not have tab completion by default, it uses completion as type which is more convenient, definitely reccomended for beginners. Personally I do like the clean and simple oksh, running it out of openbsd.

I use st because I hate maintaining configuration files and plugins. Having all the settings baked in and recompiling when necessary is ironically much less work for me. I don't really care about ricing, I just want my terminal to look and behave the way it always has.
Hououin Kyouma · 2019-02-28 15:32
I use st mainly because I want something with true colour support (urxvt doesn't have it) and have it as light as possible. It may be slightly daunting, use suckless programs, that is, but I like the modularity and control over the programs.
Wojtek · 2019-02-28 16:03
I switched from konsole to xterm recently since konsole has issues with w3m and I use ranger a lot and like to have image support. Other than odd little things any terminal emulator is fine

>>15882 I currently use GNU Emacs 'term' for these purposes, but I suspect that's not very helpful. Before I switched to Emacs I used xterm with tmux (a good terminal multiplexer is probably more important than the terminal emulator to me) just because xterm is 'the standard terminal emulator', and tmux came installed on my system. I wish there was data on the amount of ECMA-48 & ISO/IEC 8613-6 terminal emulators supported, along with a unicode support table this would make it possible to make a rational choice between terminal emulators, unfortunately we mostly only have unjustified claims (it's probably not a significant enough thing to actually test though). st + mtm would be a good option if you're into the minimal thing. kitty (not to be confused with KiTTY) would be the best choice if you want a very featureful terminal emulator. xterm & urxtv would be good options if you want the 'standard experience' (tm). libvte (and konsole) terminal emulators are typically used because they integrate well with DEs. That probably wraps things up more or less.

>>15873 my best compromise for functionality/comfort and simplicity, ease of installation/configuration and generally being able to utilize the same terminal in an identical configuration ubiquitously due to the few needed dependencies and lastly performance was suckless st[1] by a long shot. unironically xterm. The code is a mess, but there is nothing to add and it still compiles well. It supports true color, all your favourite fonts, utf-8, double-width and box drawing characters. It even supports sixels. I am working on making some backgrounds with the true color support now, wish me luck.

Basically if you want a useable experience (in my eyes) you change one character in the config for a bar cursor, install the clipboard patch, (patch -i) and set the execute command to be tmux, and then disable status bar and enable mouse in .tmux.conf. It scrolls, does one clipboard, and allows for scrolling which is pretty nice. I just changed my tmux config combo so I can use tmux in an ssh session without it getting hooked by the tmux session in st.

I see many lainons are using st so I wanna ask is there anyway for ranger image preview to work on st? Suckless removed support for w3m-img a few years ago so currently there's no way to display image on st as far as I know. I'm considering to move to another terminal emulator because of this.
Leto Atreides I · 2019-04-05 21:55
>>16513 I still use st, and ranger previews do still work. However, do keep in mind that w3m's hacky way of displaying images does rely on the terminal not redrawing that often, which doesn't play nice with st's constant redrawing of itself. What I did was change a setting on my Ranger configuration to make it so the image timed out later, got it to display for about 10 seconds before it vanishes. Honestly though, at this point i'm working more towards getting Emacs Ranger.el to work as a replacement, since I'm sick of dealing with hacky solutions for terminal applications like that. I'd go so far as to say that I'd love to have a ranger-like file browser that just opened a GTK window for it to render soykaf onto properly. It's a hard pill to swallow for me, but in the end, it's better to leave terminals just for text stuff, in my opinion.
Pulse · 2019-04-06 06:27

>>16536 >At this point i'm working more towards getting Emacs Ranger.el to work as a >replacement, since I'm sick of dealing with hacky solutions for terminal >applications like that. I migrated form a completely cli workflow to a completely emacs workflow. If Ranger.el is anything like w3m.el it's going to take a bit of configuration to get things to feel right, but after you do you're going to be capable of so much more. For example my w3m always renders to 80 columns rather than filling up the whole screen, has a cache limit so I don't have to kill the process every week or so, the whole browser is asynchronous, it has search engine support, can use ddg without link indirection, has keyboard based clipboard interaction, and can open text form areas in new buffers so I can see what I'm typing for while I'm typing it and even look up new information. I've only run into one site that's rendered worse in w3m.el, but unfortunately it's this one. I'm sure I can write a w3m-filter to fix any problem though when I get around to it. (perhaps I'll start looking into this later today)

I currently use xfce4-terminal, it has everything i need. (reasonably fast, doesn't need fuarrrkton of dependency, has transparency, and a good amound of settings). But recently i realized that i need two different terminal emulators. The problem is, i can't set different font sizes for each terminal session. I'm the most comfortable with 10pt for reading latin letters, but i can't read japanese kanji at that size, i need 13pt for that. And if i set one terminal to a larger size, all my terminals will use that, so i need to use two. Do you have any advice, which is the most similar to xfce4-terminal or which has the aforementioned properties?

So you can start the terminal with the choice of font. Perhaps use window manager keybindings (for i3, let's say) to start up the different font terminal or use two different entries into your menu (you should be able to edit menus somehow.
