Light anonymous textboard in I2P
Meddler · 2019-02-22 18:33
Short version, I want to set up an anonymous textboard in a I2P website. But I don't know which software to use or how to set them up in I2Ps built in webserver, which is called Jetty.
As you can see in these two links, there's many one can choose from.
https://tanami.org/overscript/
https://tanami.org/over/index2.pl
I know of some that are even missing from those lists. Because this board will be in anonymized multi-hop network, it needs to be light, minimal CSS, and for obvious security reasons cannot use JS. Some minimal captcha system would be needed to prevent CP spammers attacking it. There are four That I'm looking at but each have their own issue for my use case.
Kareha - http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/web/wakaba_kareha - The most stable and probably the second oldest one. Still in use on http://4-ch.net/ and other places. Easy as fuarrrk to set up because you can just drop it in any folder and just chmod the .pl file to 755 and it just works. Even has captcha. Problem? It does use minimal JS and has some very old security bugs.
Emanon - http://secretareaofvipquality.org/ - Very very closely related to Kareha, but way more beautiful. Problem? JS is used and CSS is a bit more heavy than I would like. No idea how to set it up.
HiveBBS - https://github.com/desuwa/hivebbs - Very beautiful. Light on CSS. It has some JS, but I think it will work without it. A favorite of mine. Problem? I can't tell if it has any captcha abilty. Setup is convoluted and complicated, I could not even get it to work on a public internet webserver and gave up.
SchemeBBS - http://textboard.org/ - So very beautiful, only a tiny amount of CSS and is the fastest textboard software I have ever seen. The author DOES have it working on an I2P server! Problem? It lacks captcha. It requires JS and I have not much of an idea on how to install it. I would have already used this if it didn't have those problems.
So, can anyone here give me some suggestions as to what to use? Thank you for reading.

SchemeBBS doesn't need js as far as i know (author stated it that way on the homepage).
Have you tried contacting him about these issues?
As a bonus you'd have a legion (small one though really) of all sorts of lisp freaks wound up.

It does say there's no JS on it's page in a couple places. But I found these. https://gitlab.com/naughtybits/schemebbs/tree/master/static/userscripts

captchas doesn't solve CP spam, the only way to deal with that is moderation, or sort of by being a textboard (you can still post links).
>SchemeBBS ... I have not much of an idea on how to install it.
Basically you need Nginx, MIT scheme, and to follow the instructions:
https://gitlab.com/naughtybits/schemebbs/blob/master/README.md
http://textboard.org/prog/39/2
To run it on i2p just have a i2p server tunnel to localhost on some port, then have nginx listen on that same port.

The anon who runs and created SchemeBBS doesn't have internet access most of the time as I understand it, so there might be some difficulty attempting to contact him.

A 'userscript' is a script to be run by the user in greasemonkey or a similar add-on to improve useability of the site. The website doesn't load these.

You could try http://textboard.org/ , not that it being his answering machine, but i'd imagine you could get some help setting up the thing over there.

Use TinyIB. I used it to make a private image board on my RPi sneakernet. It's light.
Linda Lee · 2019-03-21 18:42
Should I use jetty to deploy a board or should I set up nginx? Recommendations?

Hey lain are you using the internal server to build it or are you using something else? Because when I use the internal server I can't post on my kareha instance.

Ninechan is cool if you want it to not look like outdated 2ch soykaf. No JS but has quoting and soykaf.

So wait, you have people running around with flash drives in order to make soykafposts on a rasberry pi?

For children the fun is in the pointless activity itself, not the pointless outcome.
