What are some interesting uses for an optical drive slot?( (USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, In future posts, please elaborate and provide examples of what you mean and why you want to discuss the topic.))

An optical drive.

Well it was originally meant to hold 5.25" floppies so if you have the proper hardware you can hook one into there. Or you can rig up a 3.5"-to-5.25" adapter and have a slot for an extra hard drive. Or even better, you could definitely fit at least two or three 2.5" drives in that space, so there's that as well. If this were a decade or so ago you could probably get one of those control boxes that let you tweak the speeds of your fans, but this is irrelevant now that most mobos nowadays use PWM fans. If this were two decades ago you could get an Audigy card with one of those cool-ass breakout boxes.

Automated repository for data if tape reader/writers aren't in your budget: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzYQTKSBwKg If you take care of your CDs/DVDs then you might preserve the info on them for about 100 years (no moving or touching tough) and per GB are second cheapest next to magnetic tapes Next, the miniature motors inside, even though they are BLDC, are rather precise, and can be used to make small CNCs with small modification of course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opZ9RgmOIpc You could even make a full robot with enough of optical drives and few sensors attached: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XEGk_W7du0 There were also some scientific papers on making small layers of graphene using the laser from optical drives (specifically burner types because stronger laser that can deposit graphene from water solution onto small layers) but I think that is outside your scope of interest.

>>15898 Right? I'm not sure what the purpose of the Pi is but it's pretty neat to have a little screen too. Just having GPIO pins embedded in the side of your laptop... hnng
Anamika · 2019-02-28 05:03
>>15901 Check the linked instructable. The purpose is that you can use your pi using only your laptops peripherals.
Zhora · 2019-02-28 05:33
>>15903 That has nothing to do with attaching the pi to your laptop, though. you can use a pi with your laptop's peripherals regardless

>>15897 wait did you legit steal that from my /g/ thread yesterday? Some anons where talking about "bending", I'm guessing it was referring to the pins, but how would you avoid bending?
Ivan Horvat · 2019-02-28 07:44
>>15908 the thread's still up they're not talking about the pins bending, but having to bend to look at the screen. they meant that you should be able to pop out the device/screen so you can look at it easily, and perhaps have the screen connected via ribbon to be able to do so. kind of silly imo, i think it's fine how it is

Do you mean like the bay your cd drive sits in? I saw an advert for an interface that controls the fan speeds and power for the case fans. Cool, idk if practical, but cool.

>>15454 Source on DVD media lasting that long? I was under the impression that oxygen in the plastic cladding migrated in and ate holes in the metal film starting around 15-20 years, causing data to half-life gradually after that. >>15769 I'm having a definite why-didn't-I-think-of-that moment right now >>17320 Hope your PSU is beefy. I'm sure it's probably meant to be a joke, but if you put so few ohms of nichrome filament across your +12v rail like that it would instantly shut down most PSUs as a short fault. Still want it, though. Nothing makes you feel like Brock Samson more than lighting a cigarette off the dull glow of an old-fashioned car lighter with a grimace on your face.

>>17833 >Source on DVD media lasting that long? Well I had some CD (oryginal game for PC) that started to die after about 10 years (the paint on the top side started to crack and fall off). I had problems reading that CD but finaly managed to make a copy of it.
