Tech Podcasts General

iPods are dead, but podcasts are back. Let's talk about podcasts!
Here are some icebreaker questions:
1. Favourite tech podcasts?
2. Prefer a podcast with guests or a single host?
3. Do you listen to podcasts with some sort of a goal, such as learning something new, or do you listen to them for background noise?
I currently don't have any favourite podcasts since the ones I listened to started shilling too much.
Would also like a recommendation for a general tech/mathematics podcast as well!

I only follow gaming news or funny podcasts, i've never seen a good tech podcast, i guess it's just not a good format for tech.
The closest i have to a tech podcast, which isn't a podcast but i use it as one, is the level1news, it's about tech news mostly. The hosts are politically illiterate but often comment on politics, which can be annoying at times, but ignoring that it's as good a tech podcast as you can get.

That's a good point. It's not exactly the best format for tech (unless tech news).
What funny ones do you listen to?
>>15394 Have you checked out Clockwise? They're short (30 minutes) rapid-fire talks with a few guests.

I'm not from the US, the only english-speaking(not necessarily funny) podcasts i could recommend are:
Welcome to night vale:
it's like the goosebumps tv show, except in podcast format. It's funny/spooky, but not too spooky. Not too funny either. It's just pleasant to listen to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujksjzqrhys&list=PLsCIt0vAuUxODAkMU7ZJ_gLJC2ZWnffS2
Serial, season one:
Murder mystery about an ongoing case.
https://serialpodcast.org/season-one
Alice isn't dead
A story about a woman who's wife went missing. It's spooky.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln7pWGclAEQ
Giant bomb podcasts:
News about games and game-related content. I don't really like the giant bomb people, but i enjoy the 8-4 play series, it's from some dudes who live in japan, they're alright.

>1. Favourite tech podcasts?
General Intellect Unit is very good, but not an industry or consumer oriented tech podcast - it’s a leftist podcast which looks at intersections between marxism, technology, and philosophy. Explores lots of interesting ideas like alienation in a technologically advanced world, accelerationism, open source and FOSS under capitalism, etc. Very worth while if you’re interested in Marxism or leftism as a tech-y kind of person. Probably won’t interest you if you’re not.
>2. Prefer a podcast with guests or a single host?
I think both are good, but I definitely mostly enjoy multiple hosts rather than single hosts.
>3. Do you listen to podcasts with some sort of a goal, such as learning something new, or do you listen to them for background noise?
Definitely learning something new, I usually listen to them when I’m driving and often skip the episode if I’m not interested in the topic and save the episode for later I’m I’m distracted or bored so it’s not wasted.
My favourite podcasts are: chapo trap house (politics/comedy); rev left radio (politics/theory), proles of the round table (politics/history); the unplayable podcast (cricket); philosophize this (philosophy)

I used to listen to many podcasts (philosophy, history, & politics) but they ended up taking up too much time for too little knowledge gained. It seemed everything a podcast could teach me a book could teach me better. That being said in the past I often used podcasts to gain exposure to ideas which I could further delve into. Currently I only listen to two with sparse upload schedules:
Radio War Nerd: the only sane coverage of foreign affairs I've heard.
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gskoljarev/rwnfg/master/rwn.xml
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History: it doesn't really compare to taking the time to read a real book of history in density nor depth, and I dislike much of his world view but I listen anyway when I'm feeling lazy.

1. I don't know of any good tech podcasts, but I'd be interested to hear of some.
2. It depends of the format and topic. For shows that focus on humor or politics I prefer multiple hosts and guests, but for historical or informational shows I typically like single host.
3. I have different use cases for different podcasts: entertainment, information, and background noise. I haven't tried to do any serious learning through podcasts because it's hard for me to retain information I only listen to, but I'll often listen to podcasts about topics I'm interested in to get a general overview--particularly with history and politics.
As far as recommendations, I don't have any about technology or mathematics like you asked. There are some shows worth mentioning though.
>>15396 mentioned cum town, which is polarizing but worth a shot.
>>15399 mentioned chapo trap house, which I dig big time.
Some lesser known podcasts I love that y'all might also love:
Struggle Session
a podcast about gaming, movies, and anime that's actually good.
The Age of Napoleon
narrative history of Napoleon's life and rise to power. I knew almost nothing about Napoleon or post-revolutionary France before this show, and find it fascinating.
And That's the Way it Was
news, foreign policy analysis, and middle eastern history from the brilliant, insightful, and supremely entertaining Derek Davison. This one is unfortunately only accessible through a Patreon, but you can check out his blog at attwiw.com to get a sense of his content. This is by-far my favorite podcast, so I recommend checking it out if you're at all interested in the middle east or US foreign policy.

Fork Bomb
Episodes about old tech like BBS and retro computers, but also modernish stuff like Haiku
https://forkbomb.podbean.com/
Unnamed · 2019-01-28 06:34
garbage.fm
mainly openbsd related, their best episodes involve them discussing their adventures adding support for whatever new devices they just got. Unfortunately they have slowed down a lot lately and I think they may stop soon.
All of the other podcasts I listen to are not tech-related.
As for you questions I listen to podcasts mostly as background noise while I'm walking to the shop or on when I'm on the bus. In general I think podcasts require more than on participant otherwise they end up pretty samey and boring. I don't really listen with a goal in mind its just something to do.

>General Intellect Unit
thanks for the tip.
Magic Read Along, unfortunately on hiatus for now, is a good mix of functional programming talk and other random stuff. Genuinely entertaining.
The Type Theory Podcast & Haskell Cast are both dead in the water but are still worth a listen if these topics float your boat.
Because I'm interested in the language more than anything I've been listening to Reason Town which might be a good option if the above podcasts are too heavyweight for you. Hosts are a bit irritating and it can drag sometimes.
Speaking of annoying hosts, Functional Geekery has some interesting interviews.
The Secrets of Mathematics, recordings of public lectures at Oxford has a handful of buried gems, as does the long defunct Inspired By Math.

I recently started listening to Darknet Diaries. It focuses on hacks and security with a NPR like presentation style.

Though it's more business oriented, This Week in Startups can feature some interesting tech discussion on occasion.

Machine Learning and AI often with really great guests: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/5jknv-4146f/
Also I enjoy the Smart Drugs Smarts podcasts although they aren't updated anymore

Anatomy of Next is my favourite ‘tech’ podcast. It isn’t about programming really but he has a lot of great biohacker guests and talks about the details of terraforming mars.
