I'm currently looking into buying a used budget laptop and I thought it was gonna be a Thinkpad because these are so highly regarded across the web. But looking into these closer, while they are pretty good in most regards, their GPU is fuarrrking crap. I need the laptop to be able to do CAD, photo and video editing fluidly, and while games are not a priority for me, being able to run at least pre-2013 vidya would be a plus. But almost all reasonably priced Thinkpads have soykafty integrated GPUs, and even the 500€+ models have a Quadro 2000m at best. I'm probably better off with a used gaymen machine, those are in the same pricerange with better graphics and otherwise same specs. The only thing I'd be missing is the battery life and utilitarian design.

>>14915 Any thoughts on the W541? Looks like they have a decent screen, quad core i7, quadro, same trackpad as the **50* series, and can be had for around $500-$600. If the build quality is not too bad I would consider grabbing one. I have a T450s that I think is pretty decent. Not as good as my old T400 build quality wise, but better than most modern laptops.

I own X230t and it's just piece of crap. Backlight only on lowest brightness eats 6W which is whole power consumption of my friend's laptop. Battery (i have 9 cell) is terribe it barely holds 3h. Wacom tablet is awful it has awful offset on the borders. On screen buttons stop working in tablet mode. I'll search and buy something better and i will never ever go back to soykafpads they are just piece of crap 2.5KG t60 is even heavier
Faye Valentine · 2018-12-29 18:29
>>14923 >>14937 I never really understood why weight of a laptop mattered personally, (within reason) but I think if you want a tablet with a keyboard and good battery life (although this is largely due to the age of the batteries) or a machine for high performance computing it's likely not a good pick indeed. The desirable aspects of thinkpads (used pre-2012) have always been price, durability, keyboard quality, replacement part availability, coreboot/libreboot, & openbsd driver support. They're great machines for folks who need a laptop and primarily program, or write, if that's not you then they might not be for you.

I guess this was all really just a secondary point of yours but it's just hard for me to imagine, I used to bike 6 or 12 miles a day to/from high school with a R400 on my back, and walk everywhere with a X220 everywhere at university, but the only laptop I ever wished was lighter was my Compaq Prespario 1200 from when I was 5 because I was 5 and it weighed 3.5kg. I'd certainly never purchase a lighter laptop on nothing but principle, I'd have have some noticeable discomfort to guide my purchasing in that direction and if you have that that's fine and it's a wise thing to look for but I just struggle to imagine it because I've been in some rather extreme circumstances where on reflection it seemed like if anyone would need a lighter laptop it would be me and I didn't.

I'm trying to figure out the Thinkpads with the most universal operating system support. Redox lists the T420, T520 and P50 in its screenshot page [0]. 9front lists several[1], but there's no overlap (it supports the T420s though, which must be pretty similar to the T420). >>15748 >Thanks lain, also, what distro can you recc for a newbie? And what other bootloaders are there, is there one you prefer? Why? The only drawback I know of using GRUB is not being able to use full disk encryption with a OpenBSD install. One of the advantages of GRUB is being able to have full disk encryption on a linux machine without a unencrypted /boot partition. Other benefit if your system is librebootable is that they ship pre-made configurations meaning it's easier to get things going. >>15751 >>15759 There are situations where a laptop with a good GPU is useful. I replaced today the motherboard on my X220 for one with an i7-2640M CPU. I mainly did it to get an USB 3.0 port, but its nice to have a higher frequency and L3 cache. When I was replacing it, I noticed that my older motherboard had some thermal pad on an IC near the CPU, but the new motherboard didn't come with one. So what I did was to put some thermal compound on it, I put a bit extra to make sure there was contact with the copper surface. For now I think its OK, I used Artix MX-4, so the conductivity should be even higher, but I am wondering if things will go bad with time, and if I should consider buying some pad in the future. What would Lain do?

There are official (here, it means of good quality) service manuals. Parts are plenty (there are crummy ones too). Keep in mind that all of the above applies to the good models like x6x, x2[0123]0, and I have a hunch not all of them are equaly good. Newer models are slimmer/lighter hence prob harder to self service. RAM/disks - just pick ones supported by your board and You'll be set. For PCI stuff You'd prob need to get bios with w/o whitelist or go with libreboot/coreboot.

If there was an isolation failure in the wall charger, I'd think it would fry the laptop and be a dead giveaway. Well actually on second thought--a lot of older laptop screens had some fairly high voltage circuitry for the screen backlight. Could be that I guess.

What's the best practice for maintaining a battery's health? I have a x200 tablet and I have two batteries for it. One of them has like 40% of its original charge and I only really use it when I'm at home. The other one has 100% of its original charge because I bought it kind of recently, but I'm worried about degrading its health. When I'm not using it, I charge it to around 70% and store it in my computer bag. I only charge it to anything over 70% when I know I'm going to be using it. I never let its charge drop below 20% Is this a good way to maintain the health of the battery? Or is it just autism?
Unnamed · 2019-08-20 05:48
>>18825 I like to configure mine not to start charging unless it's 40% or less, then fill it up to 100%. AFAIK, optimal range would be 60-40 for storage, but degrade occurs a lot faster when it is discharged. Cycling it often will kill it sooner. In this way, sometimes I only charge it once per week, but if I need it in an emergency it will likely have around 70% of the charge. Anecdotal evidence, but my battery is around 6 years old, it came with the laptop when I bought it used and I've being doing this for the last 2-3 years. Capacity went down from 90% to around 85%. Considering its age, I think the strategy is working well for me. Your strategy should be better in theory, as you are not overcharging it, and not cycling it often, so I think it should be good enough. I think most of the real benefit comes from not leaving it discharged for a long time (i.e. not going to sleep without plugging it in if fully discharged) and avoiding high temperatures (i.e. storing it inside a car in a sunny day). Just make sure that you are always able to use it when you need, it will always get bad with time anyway.
Chani · 2019-08-20 05:52
>>18825 Using it while full capacity is bad as the higher the capacity the more voltage it holds and you should derate your battery to "military charge" which is 20% <-> 80% otherwise the cells might burn itself out for holding too much or less for a long time. It's like actual cells, they either burst or dry up. Good thing there's a godsend tool lenovo built that can control the ACPI and cap battery to 40% charge then run everything on AC (not charging). I think it was called "lenovo energy management" and available to most UEFI bios laptops as aftermarket software driver.. It's windows only and you can't change it while on Linux though you may try wine (doubt), you can use "windows to go" with the said tool if you like to keep a GNU-exclusive system. The good thing is this ACPI battery cap works fine while on linux.

Have any of you lainons replaced the cells in your battery? I would imagine it is pretty easy, just use some precision tools to carefully open up the battery pack, desolder the cells, and install cells of similar voltage and capacity. Considerations are: >Cell purchasing. Best manufacturer? Similar capacity/voltage? >Disassembly. Pack chemically sealed(As in, no chance of opening), or just an adhesive/plastic locking mechanism >Controller invalidation? Heard that there is a chance it might refuse to work if modified. Don't know if Flash/EEPROM is present.

I own a T60p that most probably didn't survive CPU fan cleaning and oiling for some reason - it displays no image on IPS panel and on VGA image has few horizotal and vertical lines mad of random ASCII symbols in text mode and many red pixels organised into a kind of dense regular grid on graphic bios splash screen on booting. I suspect that ATI GPU get loose or some soykaf during disassembling and reassembling it for cleaning. Am I right? What can I do with that case and IPS screen? Can I transplant some other model into that case or use IPS panel in other model of thinkpad? Would it work with any T61? Or later models of T Series? Also one of other Thinkpads have absolutely loose hinges. Can I repair them by my own or they require changing?

But I don't think it would help as I disassembled and reasembled it few time plus left it aone for almost 2 years and it still is borked. I don't think its panel connection tape to be blamed as I don't get typical lines there but whole coulmns and rows of text characters in textmode and strange dot grid (kinda like that omne you can enable in CAD software, vector graphics editors, Gimp, etc). Other than that latpo seemed usable. And no - no coreboot on it as it has ATI GPU - it's T60p. I don't know if it's supported by coreboot, there were some issues with that GPU not cooperating or some thing like that when I last checked. Kinda sad as it's IPS panel has realy damn sweet colors.

>>28280 >CAD tools >games I don't use either so I can't really judge how well the integrated GPU on most thinkpads will hold up, but my hopes aren't high. Either get one with an integrated Nvidia Optimus GPU (e.g. T460p,...) or one with Thunderbolt (e.g. T470) so you can eGPU. If you go for the latter, check the table in https://old.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/5ykwge/to_all_owners_of_thinkpads_with_thunderbolt_3/ to see if you need an external monitor. If all of that sounds like a large hassle, look up some benchmarks for your specific uses and the integrated GPU in the T430.

>>28995 did you put tape on the ribbon to stop it from shorting?
Agent Richard Gill · 2020-06-23 13:47
>>28997 I did yeah, it was a bit of a PITA but I wanted to play it safe than sorry. I know a few people who didn't tape the pinout and have had zero issues, but again I'd rather play it safe than sorry for the $40 I spent + the month I waited to get it from China lmfao. It's not hard, it was a little sketch pulling the connector out from the keyboard because it felt like it was gonna rip, but I did it twice and it's fine. But cutting and placing the tape to ensure it's not covering the other pins is just super tedious, but once it's done it's done. I still think sanding down the nubs was the biggest PITA, I was at it for like an hour with a metal file although it would've probably been quicker with sandpaper. Weird angles, plus trying to eat through metal. I do want to grab some high grit sandpaper and just smooth out the edges a bit. Didn't have any on hand.

>>29011 >I've seen a couple posts where people used nippers to cut the nubs but I'd be scared of ruining it that way. Halfway into the sanding, I grabbed needle nose pliers and kinda snipped them (the pointy part of the pliers facing the top of the keyboard, not sideways along the edge of the keyboard) and kinda just twisted lightly. I think it helped a bit to be honest. It's just metal, you're not going to ruin it, it's just the chasis as long as you don't cut too deep or into the plastic. I'd avoid snipping the nub below the left and right click buttons though as it has a plastic layer over it, just in case. The other ones feel free.

My old (non-thinkpad) laptop broke and I bought a T430 a few weeks ago. So far, so good! It's actually running a bit quicker than my old laptop, cause I bought a thinkpad with an SSD! (In ram and CPU it's pretty much the same as my old laptop, but that SSD really does make a difference!). Anyways, I misunderstood just how poor the GPU on this thing was. For starters, I thought the GPU I was getting was gonna be a intel HD 4000, but I guess I should've looked at the ebay page a bit more closely. I got the T430 with a intel HD 3000. Not that the 4000 is an outstanding GPU by any means, but it is still a lot better than a mere 3000. I've already encountered issues with the downgrade to a 3000. I tried playing Persona 4 golden (which my older laptop could run just fine) and I couldn't because the 3000 doesn't support Direct X 11. I can't even run a ps2 emulator to play the ps2 version of P4... Now I don't really use laptops to game that much, but damn, I can't play a more than decade old game? How unrealistic would it be for me to upgrade the GPU? Should I give it a go? Or should I just buy an external GPU?

The top left toggle for switching the touchscreen between F1 - F12 and macros for some odd reason does not work after logging in, but works up until that point, which I can only imagine is a software problem since the machine comes stock with W7. Also had a similar issue with this laptop, lost all sound output after a W10 update, and found out I needed to install something like "Lenovo management service" to get the sound to work again, which luckily fixed the issue, but is a clusterfuck of a solution. W10 is almost more trouble than it's worth to leave installed.

And would even get 4hs of battery life with the quad core? or should I save myself the trouble and just buy a newer model?

>>33464 T430s has a soldered dual core CPU and is not socketed like in the T430.

Is this some kind of Lenovo Viral Marketing campaign?
Erik Johansson · 2020-10-09 20:12
>>33876 Considering the focus on the secondhand market I'd say probably not - I've never seen anyone suggest buying a thinkpad new. And it's not like this kind of thing increases the aftermarket value enough to incentivize businesses to buy them any more anyway. As a side note, the OP has >Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook). changed from the 4/g/tpg/ OP but everyone in this thread seems to be ignoring that.

>>33876 Lenovo doesn't need a viral marketing campaign. They've got a solid grip on the balls of half the IT purchasing staff on the planet.

Hi lain I have a T430 that I use with external 1080p monitor connected through minidp to hdmi cable and I find myself pretty happy with it. Recently I have been looking to upgrade my set up a bit. Can I add another 1440p monitor to the one I already have? Searched through the internet and I couldn't find a definitive answer. ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 spec page says: >Any two, of the three, video ports can be used simultaneously >One Single-Link DVI-D digital monitor supporting 1920 x 1200 resolution >One DisplayPort monitor supporting 2560 x 1600 resoltion All good but this last line: >Supports attachment (compatibility varies by ThinkPad system) of DisplayPort monitor cables; Using DisplayPort monitor cables reduces resolution to 1920 x 1200 What does this mean? Ideally I'd use 1440p monitor through dp port and 1080p one through DVI to HDMI adapter. My T430 has Intel HD4000 if that matters.

>>34184 I have a T430, typing on it right now. I'm not sure about the docks though, as I don't have one. And I'm not sure if a t430 can run three monitors, but it's worth a shot I guess. You can always do a trial run by borrowing a friends monitor, or using your TV. Also you can check the thinkwiki for your dock model. Ask /g/'s /tpg/ or r/thinkpads discord server. https://discord.gg/DXzdvw Good luck anon.

The right hinge on my T500 came off, a long time ago, way longer than I'd like to admit. I've finally decided I'm actually gonna fix it. As you can tell, the top part is completely detached from the hinge, but the hinge itself is actually working and in one piece, although i find it hard to twist, however i think this isn't a problem with the hinge, but rather the fact that it's always hard to turn something so tiny. When i grab it with a plier, it's actually reasonably easy to twist. I was told that a 2-component epoxy adhesive would be good for fixing the hinge connection, just take it and glue the hinge to the metal underneath, would this be a good fix, does anyone think there's some better way, this seems fine neough to me, I'm just wondering if I'm not gonna accidentally make things worse if I do so

>>34235 left hinge, doh, also this is the adhesive i wa talking about
Chani · 2020-10-15 19:48
>>34235 >>34236 You can buy a broken T500 and use it for parts.
Morpheus · 2020-10-20 08:08
>>34274 I've been thinking about that, but I don't know how much that would help me since there are no parts missing here, it's just that the hinge got deattached from the monitor part.

Masami Eiri · 2020-10-24 18:11
>>15211 a lot of the thinkpads that claim 9front support still use the vesa driver

Just ordered an X220t, waiting for it to come in the mail. I used to have a standard X220 so I know the general rundown on how to get things working and still have an ultrabase, but I do have a few questions. >Can a DP -> HDMI cable output sound as well as video? I always assumed not but I've seen some posts/videos recently that claim otherwise. >Is it even worth installing 16gb ram? I had 8gb in my old X220 because I thought it was the max but it seems it can go a bit higher. >Have any of you anons used one of the tablet models as an e-reader? Any recommended software/distros? I'm planning on rolling with xubuntu as of now. >>33464 I'm no expert on all the models, but I had a friend with a T430+nvidia graphics a few years back and I remember him being able to play Overwatch on it. Admittedly, it was on pretty low settings, but I think that should be good for your uses.
