Hi Lainons I'm looking for a DE that's 1) light enough to run on ARMv8 with no GPU, 2) easy to configure (right click -> properties, easy) and 3) works well with hidpi display. XFCE meets these requirements, but I'm wondering if I have other options. Maybe something wayland based? Thanks for any suggestions.

Have a look at lxqt, it's even more lighter than xfce but I don't know about hidpi.

>>14580 LXDE is the best DE for lightweight use, if you need anything more lightweight, you should just use OpenBox by itself

>>14580 openbox+tint2 is a bit harder to configure, but it is quite light. I have mine on a secondary laptop configured to look and work exactly like xfce on my primary computer, and I'm constantly impressed with how well it runs on an atom.

Maybe try windowmaker?

>>14595 I second LXDE. It's a lot better than xfce4 imo

>>14595 lxde is top tier in my opinion, using it on my trashier machines myself

Enlightenment 18(really light) and mate(stable). >https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HiDPI#Enlightenment But I never had to use a HiDPI display. Maybe the lightweight DEs had some problem with that even if this works.

how are you able to run a hidpi display whitout gpu, you can’t go that far whit plain UEFI/BIOS res unless you really have a microscopical screen. Lightest DE is probably EDE or maybe UDE if you consider it as a DE. If you want to go autistically minimal then use aphelia wm, no virtual desktops, no frills, just dmenu and st, easiest config is no config.

dwm. edit config.h -> make install, easy.

>>14595 this. otherwise some tint2+windowmanager selfmade stuff. In 2015 I had the "pleasure" of working on a P4 machine. The guys had configured LXDE so that all in all no more than 32MB of RAM were used in idle mode. Even websurfing was kinda-sorta possible. The browser did crash pretty consistently whenever a website fired up the JS-canon. ( A feature in my oppinion)

>>17311 >32MB in a P4 What the fuarrrk. That is a really strange machine.
Motoko Kusanagi · 2019-05-21 19:42
>>17312 sorry, clarification: the setup used 32mb out of IIRC 256mb (might have been 512 but definitely not more)

>>17306 As I did try dwm out for a while, and kinda liked it (as a well made program) I can't see actual benefits from using a tiling window manager. It's really nice if I would want to have a tone of terminal windows opened that I would like to look at all the time but the reality is different. If I'm using at the moment: webbrowser - have it maximise or at least take a major part of the screen so no other windows will fit gimp/darktable - same as the webbrowser when I use it I don't really need any other windows on the screen file menager - I don't need the file menager to take the whole screen(or half of it) so I would set dwm to floating window mode for that one, and lose the automatic deployment of new windows gvim (or other editor) - vim comse with it's own tiling window system so I can divide the screen inside vim if I need to have more then one file open at once. music player - this is a fire and forget program. Start it, pick the music and let it work in the background, I don't need to see it. video player - full screen, always terminal - I really need to have more then 2 open terminals at once, even if I needed to run multiple things in terminal at once then there is always tmux that works great for this. I'm not saying that dwm or other tiling window managers are bad or anything, I just can see it fit in my workflow vary well. I do understand that different people have different workflow and different needs but for me tiling window manager as a DE is a miss idea. I just wanted to add that I'm not OP.
