>>14601 there are three sets of people that moved from traditional social media to the fediverse The first are those that care a lot about free speech The second care about controlling their data (probably most lains) The third want a space they can control, as twitter is too "permissive" for them
The Fin · 2018-12-09 21:02
>>14604 >The third want a space they can control, as twitter is too "permissive" for them this is something i've noticed even with a lot of the tumblr replacements that have been popping up lately. extremely fine-grain permissions and personal moderation keep showing up on the top of the feature lists. i disagree on principle, but i guess it's fair enough. we both want more control over our social experience online... i suppose we can work together on that.
Bobby Newmark · 2018-12-09 21:25
>>14604 actually, they all have one thing in common: a distaste for corporate spaces and a desire to build a space that actually reflects the desires of the users. If all you care about is "free speech" you'll end up with a bunch of jackoffs like GNU social. Pleroma and mastodon etc are so successful because the instances are run by people who are part of the community. Much like how you need social cohesion to keep a free software project together, you need social cohesion to keep a forum together.
Frank Garza · 2018-12-09 21:46
>>14606 >a distaste for corporate spaces and a desire to build a space that actually reflects the desires of the users well said. in my mind the definition of censorship is "preventing two people who are willing to engage with eachother from doing so". a platform does not need to force people to listen to things they do not want to hear in order to be 'censorship-resistant'. i personally would not elect to block people who would like to talk to me (or talk to anyone who will listen, including me), but i don't think it is my place to force this personal decision on other people. forcing people out of their bubbles, however well-intentioned that might be, is a violation of their agency.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2018-12-09 22:13
>>14605 I don't know, the purpose of tumblr is to play show and tell. Whether it's used as a journal, an art portfolio or just a place to show photos of your ass, it's a personal showcase. People should be able to control who gets to interact with them and how if it's considered a personal space like that. Obviously it's not for everyone (I lurk there but have never participated).
Yu-ichi · 2018-12-10 02:55

>>14606 >If all you care about is "free speech" you'll end up with a bunch of jackoffs like GNU social. Most "free speech" instances I interact with are actually full of very nice people and I don't really see how "GNU Social" (I'll assume you're referring to instances using that software) is in any way different from Pleroma. Mastodon tends to be the most "problematic" in the fediverse (both devs and the most prominent instances). At this point I'd prefer for them to de-federate from other software and just do their own thing.

>>14627 >true, but that's probably just because Mastodon is the most popular. Well no it's because of what >>14626 said. The creator of Mastodon has strong political views and wanted a safe space where we didn't have to constantly interact with people who were not as extreme as he was and he dragged a whole load of similar people from Twitter onto his platform. People who treat politics as a substitute for religion and are violently intolerant of everybody else's views are going to create trouble no matter where they are. The funny thing is it's actually Japan that is using Mastodon as a free speech alternative to Twitter. But that's a cultural thing not a political one. In western culture there is literally no difference between drawings of fictional children and real children forced to pose in front of a camera. In Japan there is. https://galattacity.com/bs-entertainment/mastodon-wtf-timeline-ansuz/

Your instance saves everything that comes through in the cache and I bet you don't want to get in a big ass trouble because of some pedo. If 250 out of 500 instance users post content like this, I'm not going to filter each user, I will block the entire instance and it will save my nerves, my time and my money since their content no more takes place on my drive. Free speech assumes it exist between people who don't need rules and guards to be nice. It assumes people know how to participate in a dispute and how to be polite. But what you get is another side of the coin. Free speech attracts cancer. This type of people was isolated by the rest of society and they look for a new place to settle in. You are not going to have nice debates and opinion exchange with such people. If instance does nothing with the hatred and /b/ level of soykaftery that comes from it, I'm not going to tolerate it. But I think that many people already start to realize how bad this is. They just have to find out the hard way.
Arisu Mizuki · 2018-12-20 22:39
>>14815 Nobody gave a soykaf about privacy in the 90's or early 2000. It was just the cool thing to do. It wasn't cool to call yourself John Doe, but X_xJay_deex_X was. That's all there is. And now it's cool to call yourself john doe, thanks to facebook and the industry of advertisement. But i have no clue what ever made you believe that people cared about privacy in the 90's any more than they do today. If in the 90's the internet was as close to the Wired as it is now, it would behave exactly as it behaves now. It's just people, the difference is, now the cool people at school are also on the internet, which is fantastic, the more the merrier. The only shame is that what dictates where the internet goes at a macro level isn't the people using it, it's whatever is profitable at the moment. A conversation with your friends in private was just a conversation, now it's "A Thing". You always gotta do A Thing. I think this is at the center of what you people are trying to talk about, this loss of authenticity. Conversations online, back in the 90's when 10 people used the internet, were just like conversations IRL. Conversations now, due to pushes from social media to turn life into a product, are A Thing. They're performative, a show, an attempt to get more social gravitas, to seem like the queen bee. I honestly believe this trend will be short lived though. I wouldn't give it 5 years for the internet to slowly decentralize.

Thus far I've created 3 fediverse accounts, 1 mastodon.social account (which got derezzed because I was referring to someone from meatspace as a "retarded whale"), then I've moved to nonfat-soykaf drinker.club, made 2 accounts there and deleted both of them, reason being I just disliked it. I was never too big into social media, I had a zucc account ages ago and I was asked to provide some sort of ID because my name was somewhat humorous. Of course after that incident I gtfo'd from zucc and never looked back. I thought I might dig the libre social media but it's essentially the same soykafe, the only difference being depending on the instance, you can be either an extreme edgelord or an extreme "snowflake" who craves for hugboxes. Where I'm going with this is, I believe that making your own website for b/vlogs/articles/pics/whatever would be a much better alternative. Because at least then it's not a dick measuring competition where you don't have silly things like favorites/reboosts/follows. Libre social media is not as bad as twitter/fb but it's still pretty bad.

I earnestly was looking into Mastodon as this sort of thing really interests me. But the list of categories of instances on the website is so revealing about the community. The fact that "furry" is listed in one of only less than 10 interests. Seriously?? How can you honestly promote your platform to the general public but at the same time completely out yourselves as a bunch of fringe dwelling weirdos? I think it's disappointing that it's nerd culture of hackers that will prevent them from actually effecting any real change on broader society because they continually alienate themselves in this way. It's really disappointing because the ideas themselves are good. But the culture is staggeringly out of touch with the real world.
Emmanuel · 2019-06-04 13:51
>>17505 You must have been asleep in the last years. Furries are mainstream now and the only major groups who still hold grudges against them are former SA goons and channers.
Wintermute · 2019-06-04 14:06
>>17510 If you think furries are mainstream then you're just the kind of out of touch I'm talking about. Large internet subculture =/= mainstream. I don't think it should be put in the same list of categories as "art, activism, LGBTIQ, regional, food, gaming, technology, adult content". Everything else in the list I think is acceptably broad and general. It just disappoints me that furry made it to the list because I think it will put off so many people (like myself) who may have been interested. Imagine if there was a category "big tiddy anime girls". Would that be an acceptable category just because there's millions of people who are interested in that kind of material?
BloodCat · 2019-06-04 14:10
>>17511 as a followup thought: I actually think the idea of this kind of fractionating of a community is not a way to build a social networking platform. Faceobok for instance doesn't have categories at its "root" level (if you'll permit me to use a UNIX metaphor). It's just about people communicating with each other; the groups and pages etc is below that. Not at the root level.
Cowboy · 2019-06-04 15:10
>>17513 >I actually think the idea of this kind of fractionating of a community is not a way to build a social networking platform. No, but it's a fantastic way to empower individuals to choose what facets of themselves they present in any given social context. I'm an accountant with an avid interest in bootleg hiphop, hardcore BDSM group parties, and the photography of Irina Ionesco. Publicly presenting my entire self on one unified social network would be a bad idea, for all kinds of social, legal, and professional reasons. Pseudonymously being able to pick-and-choose what I show in any given social context allows me to more freely discuss my areas of interest with others. I value that freedom of speech far more than I worry about any sort of balkanization of social networks. The solution to the latter is simply to make social network software easier to deploy and more efficient on resources, so that anyone can create a new community with negligible technical skills and a few spare bucks a month can start up a social network for their area of interest.
Terzibashjian · 2019-06-04 15:26
>>17515 I agree with you that having online spaces for particular interests is important. But it seems like a lot of these fediverse platforms are trying to sell themselves as alternatives for big corporate social media. If they're for interest groups to gather pseudonymously then they're not a replacement for corporate social media at all, they're just another forum/imageboard/subreddit alternative. There's nothing wrong with that. But it's not going to make any significant change on the social-media landscape and it doesn't really offer anything very radical in my opinion. I'm much more interested in platforms that can offer serious alternative ways we may communicate.
The Plague · 2019-06-04 16:53
>>17516 >I'm much more interested in platforms that can offer serious alternative ways we may communicate. I don't mean to sound rude, but I really have no idea what you're trying to get at. I'm reading what you're saying as "I want Facebook, just not *owned* by Facebook." You speak of something that's "very radical" and "serious alternatives". Radical, in what *specific* way? A serious alternative, in what *specific* way? Frankly, your approach here is quite reminiscent of a politician, marketer, or other professional propagandist. Expressions of concern over an issue, the use of vague and high-minded positive rhetoric in hoping for a solution, but also a reluctance to offer a concrete solution to the problem.
Mitnick · 2019-06-04 17:25
>You speak of something that's "very radical" and "serious alternatives". Radical, in what *specific* way? A serious alternative, in what *specific* way? It is radical because it is decentralized and not owned by any individual person or corporation, and in fact you don't need any particular app or server software to use it. It is a serious alternative because there are quite a lot of users.

Spooky · 2019-06-05 02:16
>>17520 This is a different poster to who you were replying to. >>17517 What I'm getting at is quite simple. An ideally decentralised but more importantly non-corporate social media to challenge zuckbook. ie: provide a platform for public posting, events, IMing etc, that people would likely actually use as an alternative to zuckbook. My gripe was, indeed, in many ways marketing issue. I didn't like how Mastodon was presenting itself given its stated goals. I don't think that is a trivial matter. I only just heard about Fediverse from this thread and got excited but I guess its not what I hoped it was.
Naomi Nascimento · 2019-06-05 09:38
>>17528 that people would likely actually use as an alternative to zuckbook. Meh, facebook isn't that popular anymore and IIRC they're losing numbers. Most people are on instagram now, which is owned by facebook. Pixelfed is supposed to be the federated instagram but i haven't looked at it yet. Thing is, even if an alternative presents itself people won't migrate en masse, if they didn't stop use facebook after all what has been revealed, why would they stop using it for something minor as "here is an alternative". I think the best course of action is to present and develop alternatives, whatever they may be, for people who want them. I don't really think trying to convince people will actually work because alternatives are there but people just can't be bothered with that soykaf, facebook, whatsapp, snapchat, discord,... all of these things have decent alternatives but are pretty much empty in comparison.
Nemissa · 2019-06-05 12:28
>>17535 yeah you're right. I was doing a bit more thinking on this and I agree with you. What's interesting is that people often tend to move to platforms that are offering something new or interesting or quirky. A new fun way to connect with each other. I don't think people started using fb because there was mass marketing campaigns for it. They just used it cause it was slick and new and all their friends were on it. Theoretically I think it could have been an open source thing which everyone went to. Oh well, maybe I'll look into joining one of these fediverse instances to chat to some random lainons.

I am not saying lainons can't argue about censorship and politics of social media platforms specifically or in general, I am just saying they shouldn't derail existing threads to do it, and they should elaborate on their opinions, beliefs and understanding instead of spilling soykaf (Rule 4) and calling people retarded (personal attacks , Rule 3) and make new threads for such discussion. Also if you think my moderation sucks and can be improved, then please complain but don't do it in this thread, use /q/ or Mumble or IRC instead. Your post about /r/politics and politics in general was a Rule 4 violation, off topic and derailing the thread.

>>18433 You know what. I do appreciate that actually. Consider this an apology of some sort. >>18393 But isn't the whole point of decentralizing that you can just go to a server where you can say what you want?

I can only imagine how toxic the real thing is if a lainchan post about it has generated such jewels of stupidity.

>>17598 I mostly stay on it because I've been around since the identi.ca days. But I hardly ever post there, nor is there anything of interest in my feed. Most interesting people have gone back to Twitter.

I have abandoned my OG mastodon account and don't feel like coming back to it. And I'm looking for a generally chill community where I can just post whatever. What instance does Lain recommend? It doesn't have to be very topical, tho focus on technology would be nice.
