Want a hot tip? Try volunteering at large charity shops that do electronics. They always keep the good stuff in the warehouse to be sent off to head office and put on ebay.
I managed to grab all sorts of stuff before it was sent off, including that sxga crt. Would normally cost a small fortune at auction for it's hd resolution, but grabbed it for £3.

Sometimes I fantasize about having to move away and drift for whatever reason, with no more than what I could stuff in my duffel bag. I think about all the small useful things i'd take and how I would maximize my efficiency while on foot. I'd be transient wireless ghost, skimming off the top of a world brimming with wasted energy. I'd live more in the moment as if all these amenities around me tug at my attention to keep me away from the now. Maybe its a delusion I have, to cope with my childhood and convince myself that if I were to become homeless I'd deal with it better now, like I'm somehow more prepared.

It's good to hear you enjoy your work and you might work less. I was likely just projecting as that situation would make me very unhappy even if it was interesting work, but everyone's a bit different.
>My point was more on the line that everything has its tradeoffs, I might have more money than average for my country, but I also have little personal time.
It's a good point to make. I personally like to think of my expenditures in time rather than money. (still a shallow calculation as one might enjoy their work as you do.)
Technician · 2019-01-13 12:11
>>15148
> I personally like to think of my expenditures in time rather than money.
That is absolutely true. And I follow that.
I am taking this as an investment. I am working as as consultant. That has given me the chance to set up a big chunk of """big data""" and analytics infrastructure in 2 large spanish firms in less than a year. I take that as quite valuable, and looks great on my cv.
That also has given me money, and work that I enjoy. In exchange I have paid time.
Was that a good investment? I hope so, but i am not sure at all. That is how it goes with investments.
Do I thinks should be different, and no-body should work more than 40 hours per week? Yes, and I dont think anyone should work more than 30 either. Anything else is modern day slavery, and it has been "proved" [1] that people produce more in a 30 hour week (and note that I wrote "people produce more" not "people are more productive")

>Everyone should do this since value is measured in labor hours.
It's a bit more difficult than just comparing labor hours unfortunately in this situation because price isn't value, you might like your work (or dislike it to varying degrees), and you still have to do some sort of impossible utilitarian calculation to determine if you actually want to buy something.

having multiple monitors is like having a large desk. i'm never using everything on my desk all at once, but it's not like i'd keep less stuff on my desk if it were smaller--everything would just be on top of each other. better to have more desk space so I don't have to flip through as many papers to find that thing I pulled out half an hour ago.
mind you, that probably wouldn't be as big a deal if i had more discipline and a longer attention span, but it's way easier to hook up an extra LCD than to work on that

pure enjoyment increases overall happiness. Being productive is linked to your mood, you can be depressed and be productive, but you can be even more productive being happy. I can't cite you on any studies, cases, whatever, but anectodally (not meant to be synonymous with denial), I take a lot more value in sessions in which I attempt to achieve anything productive if I am generally happy. Being able to book a certain amount of time, set some goals and work towards them, continually but not literally all the time, is a much more effective use of my time and I gather the overall learning experience is amplified, compared to if I had to dedicate myself to being productive all the time. I reckon you *cannot* *actually* be productive all the time, so I will find a way to distract myself anyhow. Taking a walk, perhaps socializing, reading, gaming, whatever habits I choose to distract myself with, are inevitable. Of course gaming is bad if not kept in good measure, like with literally anything else. But you don't have to be an addict about it. Just my 2 BTC.
