Tech Questions Thread
Unspecified · 2018-07-30 00:49
Thread for various tech questions not big enough to warrant creating a whole thread for.
I'll start:
My router thinks it's in a different geolocation than it is. I've discerned that it is the router, as I tested different computers running on it and they all display the same geolocation. I've never had that router in that location, and it only relatively recently began assuming the wrong location. Any services that utilize location are given the wrong location due to this
Apoc · 2018-07-30 02:02
Change your DNS lookup setting.
Load balancing is sometimes regional and implemented in DNS. i.e., Request the IP for a domain, it gives you one relative to the domain name server. Use a china domain name server, get Chinese IP addresses.
Alternatively, update your GEOIP database. (why the fuarrrk does it care where it thinks the IP addr it has came from?)
Install OpenWRT, Tomato, etc. firmware & begone with useless BS proprietary soykaf like "router Geolocation".

Hey lains, can you help me? I did install bspwm in my Thinkpad but it doesn't work.
The problem is: blank page, keybinds aren't working.
Yeah, yeah I'm shure that I made a copy of sxhkd and bspwmrc is executable, bspwm.desktop is already in /usr/share/xsessions.
I've been searching for 1 and half hour and I tried some '''''solutions''''' step by step, but nothing worked.
My OS is Antergos and I chose Openbox when istalling and that is what I'm running now.

If you have 18.04 (current release), you already have LTS. If you have an older version, you can simply upgrade to 18.04.
If you want to downgrade to 18.04 (from 18.10), easiest is probably a reinstall. Remember to export your ZFS filesystems. Might not be needed, but I see that people generally recommend an export before you move filesystems to a new system or OS.

My school uses Mag One BPR40 walkie talkies. i think they are UHF. If I wanted to listen in, would i buy the same model, or should i buy a diffrent walkie talkie? I might need to search through frequences. would the scan function work for that, or would a walkie talkie with a number pad be better because i can just put in the frequencies from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_band ?

If I add something like `0.0.0.0 lainchan.org` to my /etc/hosts file it should redirect when I try to go to lainchan.org right? It's not working for me though. Is there something that I have to do to apply the changes or something?
The reason I want to get this to work is that I'm trying out OpenBSD's httpd server and I want to simulate accessing different domains by redirecting them to localhost.

Eh it seems to be working now... not sure what I did.
My next problem is displaying "clean URLs". My site is a bunch of html files with no extension and httpd is serving them as binary files to download. I need it to treat unknown extensions as html files. Anyone?
Unsigned · 2018-10-17 07:28
>>13765
Your browser probably cached the real IP address and therefore didn't look in hosts until you restarted/some time passed.
For clean urls you'll need an actual webserver that implements rewrite rules or write your own cgi implementation in something like flask.
Bobby Newmark · 2018-10-17 16:52
>>13766
Rewrites seem to have been implemented by this commit: https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=152763343417988&w=2
And I think this implies it was somehow possible before: https://www.cyberciti.biz/reviews/book-review-relayd-and-httpd-mastery/
>The third chapter talks about creating pretty URLs and matching domain names.
But I can't figure out the syntax to solve my problem. I might have to resort to Flask, but it would be nice to solve this directly on the webserver.

I'm going to try to salvage a mech-KB I borked the firmware of, and I think I got most stuff under wraps for planning.
Only thing I need is some wire, the diodes and a microcontroller, everything else I can salvage.
> actual query starts here
But I'm a bit confused about the microcontroller. I'll use QMK, and that supports either AVR or ARM, figure maybe I'll go for AVR since it's cheaper.
It's here I get overloaded, I've never had to choose a chip before, and I can only find a list of supported keyboards, not chips, in the QMK docs.
Is any AVR chip good as long as it has enough inputs or am I missing something?
Also on the inputs, if I understand correctly, it needs either one analog input for every vertical+horizontal row, or... I can convert to digital signals? Cause I noticed the LowCost version of the teensy has 13 analog inputs but 27 digital ones.
>TL;DR
I'm very confused about choosing a chip for a DIY salvage-KB and I don't really know what I'm doing.

I found the solution by accident. On the bottom of the FTP page there was an example config[0] for people wanting to host a mirror. It had this line:
># Necessary so patches and other files don't show up as binaries

So I added "default type text/html" to mine and it did the trick.

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/37355/multiplexing-inputs-on-a-microcontroller
Instead of finding a chip with 100+ inputs, what's normally done is io multiplexing.
The idea is that all the keys are divided between some number of inputs, so you have k inputs divided into n lines. You then iterate over each of the n lines, electrically disabling the others (by grounding or writing 0 whatever). To find out what key is on you look at which actual io pin is high and which one of the one of the n lines you're currently iterating over.
Since you already have a keyboard with the keys already wired all you should have to do is figure out the way the original microcomputer was wired and just connect it all properly by trial and error.
https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/48572/creating-a-keyboard-with-a-microcontroller-do-i-need-an-input-pin-for-each-key
The other thing to think about is switch bouncing. When you press a key the actual waveform that the input pin sees gos nuts for a while, shooting up and down, usually for less then 30ms. So immediately after you see a pin state change ( a key press down event or a key press up event) you just wait for 30ms before continuing to poll for io.
https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/technical-articles/switch-bounce-how-to-deal-with-it/
Or you could just go to a thrift store and get a microcontroller from a working cheap keyboard and skip the chip choosing and programming step altogether, going straight to the trial and error plugging stuff in step.

>does any one know how to copy a windows installation to a smaller drive (1tb hdd to 500gb ssd)
Basically solutions for doing this suck.
You can resize partition first, which Windows 10 can do from disk management, then basically dd or partclone it (partclone does have filesystem awareness) to a new drive.
OR
use an acronis live CD. No installation. Easy to do the clone. Definete and NTFS understanding. But its proprietary, and you have to download the proprietary iso from somewhere.
Acronis is easier, technically piracy, doesn't require you to install anything if you use livecd, but you place your faith in propetary software.
Partclone / dd is an option.

Is it possible for a BIOS to retain its memory even after the CMOS battery was removed?
I recently fuarrrked up my laptop hardcore, and need to reinstall. However, I seem to have set up a BIOS password a few months ago that I can't remember. I just removed the CMOS battery, waited 2-3 minutes, plugged it back in and found that the BIOS password was still there. The BIOS password reset code provided after typing the wrong PW in thrice doesn't check out with any BIOS password generator online, so I can't crack my own system that way.
If removing the CMOS battery doesn't reset the BIOS, is there any other way to do that through hardware?

Ender · 2018-11-15 18:49
>>14255
there might be a seperate function key to selected boot priority even when then bios is locked. next easiest would be to pop out the ssd and plug it into a different machine then just dd to a external drive. if you don't have another machine to plug into what you can probably do is unplug the ssd so that the only bootable medium is your usb key and then plug the ssd back in after booting and copy either to your usb key or a external drive.

Had to buy an NVMe adaptor off of Amazon and I'll clone that drive as soon as I can. Few questions for the more experienced:
1) I understand that if I just buy a new SSD, install an OS onto that and try to boot it, it would NOT work because the boot device wouldn't be recognized. Correct? I hear the BIOS associates boot devices by MAC address.
2) If I just wipe the old SSD and reinstall an OS onto it, plug it in, then it should boot correct? I can't access my fuarrrking UEFI to change the boot order and I must have disabled the boot menu key last time I meddled in there.

Void · 2018-12-17 19:11

If you're trying to dual boot you need to install Windows first then Linux second.
The reason is that Linux installers recognize the Windows bootloader and won't stomp on it. The Windows installer doesn't give a fuarrrk and will destroy anything else on the drive.
>nstall Windows on my secondary removable HDD.
Last time I tried this it didn't work. Windows refused to install to any drives not directly connected by sata cable.

If performance is not too much of an issue and you don't need direct access to hardward, then running Windows in a virtual machine under Linux might be a good option.

I thought I knew how VPNs worked until I went to try and use them. On Debian/Ubuntu repos and on Fdroid I have seen programs that call themselves "VPN clients" that I assumed were the software you used to connect to the remote computer that you would be forwarding your traffic through. Once the "VPN client" was connected you would manually configure Firefox/Weechat/Thunderbird/whatever to connect through your VPN connection.
But now I am trying to learn to use one and all of them want you to download their proprietary app and then install a proprietary plugin to Firefox that works with their app.
So, what am I not getting here?

Sounds like you're thinking of VPN to mean some type of proxy. Most "VPN clients" are more likely things for making VPNs and won't have a VPN provider associated with them. Stuff like openvpn, wireguard, quicktun, tinc, etc. The point of the VPN part, instead of just using a proxy, is that you wouldn't have to configure each program you wanted to use. Because it'd be proxying at a lower layer. IP instead of TCP. I've never used a VPN provider as a proxy because I don't trust their asses to not just be an extra middleman logging my soykaf and making my traffic look shady by having it go into and coming out of a VPN provider's IP range.

This is just off the top of my head advice and I'm not familiar with your laptop model. So, with that being said, if you want to keep Debian, you might want to check out thermald or TLP in regards to overheating. Otherwise, like the other anon mentioned, I've found Ubuntu to work better out of the box on some laptops in regards to overheating. I've learned over the years to make sure everything is set with respect to drivers and then use something like Psensor, to monitor heat and fan speed, until you're confident that everything is running smoothly with Debian on laptops. Also, Debian 9.7 has been released. Best of luck!

I was hoping that there was software that I could use to validate that my ports are actually running at 1000Mbit/s before buying a replacement. From >>15495 It looks like my options are to start replacing hardware before confirming that it's actually broken.

If you've watched Luke for long you'd know his channel isn't really a linux stuff channel.
The fact is no one really does what Luke does, he mixes philosophy, economics, linguistica, nix, and internet memes in a way no one else really does.
If you are purely intrested in just nix stuff I suggest:
distro tube - alright but doesn't really get indepth
Stephen's Machine Room - US boomer rarely uploads but has comfy talks about BSD and Solaris, does some retro sun workstation stuff.
Backyard Tech - aussie boomer talks about BSD and Solaris. more rambly than stephen but uploads more frequently.
iBSD - really only talks about BSD, I just found the channel and I'm not 100% sure about him.
most of the linux youtubes vary between teenagers reading the gentoo or arch install guides and running through the install in virtualbox on windows and ricers uploading their rice onto youtube to share on r/unixporn.

as a disclaimer I'm really more of a nix admin with some networking expirience. I'm pretty sure the reported link speed is considered "correct" because it's negotiated between both clients on either end of the cable. You can try iperf to test peformance between your questionable machine and a known good machine. If it's significantly lower than what your link speed should be (with overhead so like less than 947mbps) then the nic might be fuarrrked.

Hi anons. I wanted to start using LaTeX cause as I know is way more comfortable and aesthetic than word for doing reports. I have windows in my laptop for now, so I proceed to install MiKTeX. Then, as far as i know, the best text editor is vim, so I installed it, but I got stuck when trying to install the LaTeX plugin (following this steps: http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/index.php?subject=download&title=Download). As I understood, I have to edit the vimrc file (_vimrc in windows). I also read I should create a new file in $HOME, instead of editing the default _vimrc file. Apparently, windows apart from vim has gvim, or something like that, so I should edit both files. So, what should I do? Create two files in $HOME (_vimrc and _gvimrc), and write the same thing in both of em? Maybe I'm too stupid for doing this kind of thing cause literally I have been struggling with this for almost the whole day now.
Also, which LaTeX packages do you reccomend me for formulae? Cause I'm writing physics reports.

Ok, apparently gvim read both files, I get that, so I was able to follow the second step, but then when trying to make the third step it promped something like "E151 no match". Then I think (cause actually i'm not sure at all if i did it right lul) i installed vim-plug. I wrote in the _gvimrc file something like:
call plug#begin(~/vimfiles/autoload)
Plug 'vim-latex/vim-latex'
call plug#end()
I also installed this http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/documentation/latex-suite.txt through the powershell. That's why i get the correct file when i do :help latex-suite.txt (that would be the forth step). Also, I guess that's why now when I do :helptags ~/vimfiles/doc nothing happens (as i said, it used to promp an error). I know that the plugin isn't installed cause when I open a .tex file nothing changes, I mean, I don't have the template option etc.
Also, when I enter the command :PlugInstall it promps "not an editor command". I read that in some cases installing git fixs that problem, so I did that, but still without working.

I've been trying to find how to add a custom new layer on caps/space (ergonomics and making it easier to code cause I have a scandinavian keyboard which is like kicking dead whales down the beach for that purpose, pic related), but I can't seem to find what to search for to find results for linux.
Found a guide for windows, but the recommended TouchCursor doesn't work for my needs (lacks functionality to use the altGr modifier and actually doesn't work correctly (pic also related) to begin with at all. Have yet to try AutoHotKey though.
Also with TouchCursor, it seems like you can't make it output something that isn't already on your keyboard. Is having a button on the custom layer for let's say, λ, a thing you can do?

so i'm setting up BIND for my local network and i'm trying to get my head around how to set up reverse zones for classless networks. from what I understand, if you have a classless network with a whack >24, you're just supposed to make reverse zones for all its subnets with the whack set to the next octet boundary to the right. e.g. if you have a network which has a /22 subnet mask you need to create reverse zones for the four /24 subnets which it encompasses, so that 10.1.0.0/22 would need the zones:
0.1.10.in-addr.arpa
1.1.10.in-addr.arpa
2.1.10.in-addr.arpa
3.1.10.in-addr.arpa
so if I have a local network which is on 172.16.0.0/18, i would need to create reverse zones for all of the 64 /24 subnets which could be created for that network? am I just misunderstanding, or is there an easier way to do this?

Because I like being able to just plug and unplug things at a whim, plus I use public wifi for my internet, so I'd rather not leave anything out in the open like that, I've got one pi with pfsense up, but I'd rather not just have my home folder exposed on two ends even if it is encrypted.
I'm thinking there's some chroot configuration I'm going to have to do to make it work, where I leave a terminal on the computer chrooted into the pi to run moc and somehow get get X up and running with it to run mpv for movies.
I know this has probably been done before but I don't know what to look into to get started on it.
Or maybe just try and figure out some sort of internal network that doesn't let the pi connect to the internet.
I know what I want, I don't know how to get there.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6789857/GPS-systems-struck-Y2K-like-bug-April-6-Security-expert-says-NOT-fly-day.html
GPS, the Global Positioning System, works on its own date and time scale based on counting weeks, and seconds in a week to express satellite positions.
GPS' are only able to count up to 1024 weeks before rolling over to zero again.
This is to limit the size of the numbers held in the GPS calculations.
The first ever week for GPS' started at 00:00:00 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) on Sunday, 6th January 1980.
Since then the week number has rolled over once from 1023 to 0 at 23:59:47 UTC on Saturday, August 21 1999.
This happens every 19.7 years.
The problem is caused when GPS-based equipment or software is confused by the rollover, in an error similar to the year-2000 software problems.

I don't understand the error you got with tinyboard. If you want support then please actually describe what you did step by step, what you expected and what happened / didn't work.
Regarding creating users for wakaba error message.
You want something like
CREATE USER 'adminuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'passwordgoeshere';
where the value you replaced CHANGEME for SQL_PASSWORD with in config.pl replaces passwordgoeshere above.
That will make the user identified by the password.
Next you need to give your user permissions to access stuff
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON * . * TO 'adminuser'@'localhost';
will give them access to everything
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON ib_database . * TO 'adminuser'@'localhost';
will give them access to everything in ib_database if it has been created already. If it hasn't then use
CREATE DATABASE ib_database;
to create it before granting permissions.
For more information see

Hey Lain I'm trying to step up my home network game. I'm proficient enough to configure networking on my *nix machines and troubleshoot basic issues, but I really don't have a lot of experience with anything more advanced that that.
I actually share internet via with the other units in my building via some well-placed range extenders and powerline adapters, so an immediate goal would be making our little ad-hoc mesh net a bit more robust.
Eventually I'd like to maybe setup an OpenVPN server so I can connect back to my LAN or host some simple applications like Nextcloud or a wiki on a SBC or something. But since I share the LAN with like 8 other people I want to be extremely careful about allowing anything in, and want to be sure I'm absolutely certain I know what I'm doing before I try anything.
So, does anyone have some resources they'd recommend? I've seen some networking textbooks thrown around in other learning threads, but I'm looking for something a little bit more intermediate. Thanks!

I get IP addresses - yep thats the HW... then I get apps use ports to divide there data from that of other apps... cool...
but I don't get why (among other things, but this is my current bain) ftp servers running passive mode might use loads of ports - e.g. I see people recommend opening ports 45000-50000 (I understand using higher range, obscurity and stops other apps overlap)... but why the fuarrrk does it need LOADS of ports... why not just 1,2 or a few?
Will it work if I only open 50000-50010 or less?

If I understand right you're asking why servers use a lot of ports?
>I get apps use ports to divide there data from that of other apps
Yes but you also need 1 port per connection. The way servers work is they listen on a well known port e.g. 21 for FTP or 80 for HTTP. When a client connects to this port the first thing the server does is transfer the connection to another port called an ephemeral port to keep the main port open for new clients.
So basically a server needs to have 1 port for every connected client + the main port open.
>>16264
>Do I have to disable root logins on my server?
People disable root login on shared servers because it leaves less information when things go wrong. If root is disabled and admins need to login with their username and then su/sudo to root, then you can figure out who fuarrrked something up.

What is the best?
Is there a battery bank that:
1) does not need to be "turned on" - i.e. just works when something USB is plugged in.
2) Does not stop charging and goto sleep when item is fully charged or device plugged in has a very low power demand.
3) can be recharged via 12v car socket (or any 12v supply)
4) Uses Li-Po batts.

Privacy (no stupid EULA), security, stability (Steam and games worked great), hardware compatibility, and Freedom, which means being able to dig into any aspect of your OS and being able to learn from it (in addition to whatever GNU defines). I personally benefitted from using GNU/Linux the most from an educational standpoint. Window is so closed in every aspect that it's hard to learn anything from it and become truly technically literate. GNU/Linux just doesn't get in my way and I love it for that.
If you're not interested in learning new things and/or putting in some effort to switch then don't bother and game on your windows.

Should I get a mac mini with an i7 or a macbook with an m3?
I'm a hikikomori so my reasoning for the macbook is that it would be neat to have it by my bed and should I wake up in the middle of the night with some ideas I could instantly work on them.
However, I think the mac mini would be more suitable for me since I'll be doing video editing and maybe someday game development.

Better to just have keep pen and paper by your bed, and choose based on what would be better in general. Also if you definitely must work on it immediately it really doesn't take that many seconds to reach the desktop. Ideas only tend to leave your head if you have to walk through doorways.

Hello there
I am looking for messenger for me and my girl.
It has to have clients for both Android and Linux.
Every damn messenger want to collect my personal data (Signal, Whatsapp, Telegram, all of them need my phone number).
I want it to have ability to send text, images and do video conversations. No fuarrrking contacts synchronization, no need for phone number.
Messenger isn't an option too, as I hate fb.
Spike Spiegel · 2019-05-19 18:29

You want Wire (wire.com).
The server and all clients (native on Linux, Android, OSX, Windows, IOS) are open source. It's available on phone app stores, or by direct download from their website (handy for Android phones without any Google stuff installed, like if you're running LineageOS without Gapps).
It's end-to-end encrypted for all messages, voice, video, etc. via the Signal protocol. Unlike other secure messengers, you can have multiple clients connected at the same time without compromising the end-to-end security.
You don't need a phone number to sign up, just an email address. If signing up via the phone app, it defaults to showing a phone# signup, but you can just press "Email" to do it that way instead.
It can sync contacts *if* you choose to let it, but by default it does *not* ask for contact info.

Encryption is top-notch. It's using the exact same double-ratchet end-to-end protocol as Signal. No cleartext hits the Wire servers.
The way they handle the multi-simultaneous-device thing is for every device/installation to generate its own public/private key, and for the public key to be added to one's account on the Wire servers. When Alice goes to send a message to Bob, Alice's client grabs Bob's public keys, and sends multiple simultaneous messages to all of Bob's clients. Users can revoke those keys by removing a client from their list of clients (which can be done from any client - handy in case of stolen phones, for example).
This also means that a new device cannot be used to retrieve messages from old devices, and that offline devices may not get a message that was sent to another online device. For example, a text message that you get on your phone while your laptop is in suspend will only be on your phone and cannot be retrieved by your laptop later. This is great for security, not great for convenience. It's just one of those things where they had to make a design choice of security vs convenience, and they chose security.
Chat backups can be made by manually going into settings and specifically choosing to make a backup, but they are NOT encrypted (unlike Signal backups, for example). But on the plus side, backups are stored locally. Unlike "we put your cleartext chat backups on Google Drive!" Whatsapp.
Data collection is an interesting topic. One's Wire account keeps a list of everyone that one has messaged, though not when. This may or may not be important for you, you've got to make your own mind up about it. I think it's a legitimate point of criticism towards them, but for me personally it's not a dealbreaker. Wire is based out of Switzerland and Germany so those laws apply.
I've never heard of status.im. I'm honestly wary of blockchain chat systems. I'm waiting for smarter-than-me people to weigh in on this one before I use it.
Matrix is one of those projects that I really WANT to like, but I can't just yet. So much of it is alpha-quality, not even beta. I'll revisit it a few years down the line. It's got promise but it's just not there yet.

Heyω, I'm always interested in being able to avoid graphical interfaces. Since I mostly visit chans for reading the text, and posting text, is there some way to read from, post to, chans from character-terminals? I wonder, also, what the standard practice is regarding alternate interfaces (usenet, email, or simply file transfer come to mind, because each is a tree) for interacting with a chan. There's probably something like this out there, since the chan data structure is fairly simple.

>cannot be retrieved by your laptop later. This is great for security, not great for convenience.
>not great for convenience.
Not having the ability to retrieve messages which are on another device does not preclude the ability to forward messages to another device. It would be stupid not to include this, because data accessibility is part of data security (in the broad sense of data security, which includes such as integrity (all the data is as it ought to be), accessibility (all the data is can be gotten (by those authorized to be able to get it)), confidence (only those authorized to be able to get the data ought to be able to get the data),,). This can be done without compromising the confidentiality of the data by ensuring that only authorized persons can send the data. Of course it's best to focus on finalizing one feature at a time, which implies not adding too many features until all the extant ones are finalized. Seeing that this is a young project, this lack of facile access is OK, because, once confidence is feasible, it is important to never lose confidence, even for facile access. Of course, facile confidence is the goal.

Availability is about attackers not being able to deny service to legitimate users, not retards who leave their phone at starbucks.
>This can be done without compromising the confidentiality of the data by ensuring that only authorized persons can send the data.
I believe the point of this feature is that if somebody compromises your chat account they can't suck down all the chat history from other devices without also being in possession of those devices.

Why stack? Why must you grow down to zero? Do you hate me?
> I'll never grow up.
Do you think you're mother fuarrrking Peter Pan?!
You do know that 99% of buffer overruns wouldn't have caused data corruption to propagate into callee functions, wouldn't have smashed the stack and/or caused remote code execution, if you just grew the fuarrrk up, literally. You do know that right?
Splicer · 2019-06-02 15:34
>>17488
>Why stack? Why must you grow down to zero?
Stack and heap both grow by unknown amounts at runtime so logically you put one at the bottom to grow up and the other at the top and grow down to minimize risk of clashing.
Stack was chosen to grow down in Intel 8080 because then all stack pointer operations are using a positive offset instead of always using a negative index.
All Intel processors now have to do it too to keep backwards compatibility, the only reason Intel has become so prevalent while superior CPU architectures died on the scrapheap of history. Backwards compatibility.

Oh, my sweet summer child.
> Stack and heap both grow by unknown amounts at runtime so logically you put one at the bottom to grow up and the other at the top and grow down to minimize risk of clashing.
Yes. That would be ideal, and it is an option, but that is NOT what any C compiler does for you. Now that we have virtualized memory addresses it's trivial to make the heap grow down and the stack grow up from opposite ends.
What C programs (and thus all other languages who emulate their stack frames) actually does is start at some value, like 0x7FFFFFFF (on 32bit), and grow the heap up from there while growing the stack down from there. They don't meet in the middle, they start at the middle and grow outwards, which I agree is back-asswards and just plain wrong and arbitrary.
You can memmap on linux or virtualAlloc on windows a heap with "grows down" option, or create a stack that "grows" up. It's not intel hardware limitations at all, stack is pure software on x86[_64]. It's the C compiler's decision to do soykaf the wrong way, every damn time the standards body has a choice to make. This goes for no formal specification for signed or unsigned on "char" (used for strings).
The truth is, a bunch of middle-of-the-road morons designed all the bullshit most people use, and everyone is lazy. Windows has been recompiled several times. On linux / BSD it shouldn't matter, since the source code can be recompiled and the stack direction change handled during compilation.
Linux wasn't invented until Virtual Memory was already around, but FLOSS devs are just as clueless as proprietary ones.
Since we have virtual memory. Stack or Heap could both grow up or both grow down. Start one off at 0x800...000 the other at 0x000...000, or put them at opposite ends of memory. We could grow heap from (void*)-1 (mem max) and grow the stack up from (void *)0, or vise versa like you thought it worked. The Intel Chipset even has a direction register, so you can make all your inc and dec ops run forward or backwards, movsb, etc. will copy the other way.
Intel hardware was designed for either direction stacks. C compilers are just soykaf. We still use C and have zero security. The reason C isn't changed is because of lazyness: If you point out the stack direction issue, the standards body will say: "Stack direction is implementation defined" and if you submit a patch that fixes the stack direction implementers will say: "WTF? Why?" And if you have to argue with them for 100x longer than this post before you realize they're just making excuses and have no fuarrrking idea what they're talking about.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2019-06-04 09:31

Let me be perfectly clear: If you are growing your stack down from the middle of memory, and your heap upwards from the middle of memory... you have arbitrarily limited the max stack and max heap to 1/2 the memory available.
That is just plain stupid, no if ands or buts about it.
I could forgive growing the stack down from the top of memory, and the heap up from zero. That's the wrong direction for many other reasons, see also array overrun direction... but at least you'd have the full memory range available if you need a small stack and a big heap...or a Giant stack and a tiny heap. but you can only have 50% stack / heap. Or some other pre-defined value (at compile time, LD will accept different placement of blocks). No dynamic "stack is growing real big while heap is small,... now stack is small again, and heap use is over 50% memory."
Considering how slow IO wait is, and that we process video to upload on our damned phones and such, this stack splitting main memory is an issue that artificially slows everything down (and creates security problems).
Yes, it really is as simple as counting the other direction to give a huge boost to security and speed. No, it hasn't happened yet because, DERP! morons build the tech this world depends on.

I don't quite know what to think of this, mostly because I've yet to see the details.
I'm very skeptical and believe this may have to do with a mistaken notion that rational numbers can be stored as efficiently as expected. That is, I believe this may make sense in one way, but not make a real difference, because it would be equivalent or even larger on a real machine. Does this make sense to you?
In any case, let me know where you found that. I'd perhaps be interested in reading more and seeing if there's been any progress since. I'll also tell you /lambda/ would've been a much better place for this.
Now, I have my own question. I want to institute a comment system on my website with a single form on a single page. I already know how it will work and I'll be manually reading any comments and manually adding them. My only question is how to get Apache to do this. I don't know how to tell Apache to either append all POST requests with a certain quality and below a certain size to a file or to spit it into a sh script that just uses head to do this.
I'd appreciate some help and I'd really prefer to avoid heavily customizing Apache. I'm currently using a completely default installation that only serves static files.

You could try setting up a simple openvpn server, connecting back to that, and then configuring you firewall and network shares to only allow clients connected to the VPN. If you're feeling lazy there are docker images that have this already configured--you pretty much just need to grab the certs and you're rolling.
You may have trouble using your dorms network though--who knows what ports they've got blocked and how they do their IP leases. None of the small benefits to having multiple partitions I've heard of justify the inconvenience of having multiple partitions on a small drive.

If you can't imagine what you would do with dedicated partitions or a volume manager, you probably don't need dedicated partitions for /usr or /var, but it is still convenient to have one for /home for when you want to reinstall, or switch distros.
In my systems, I tend to give 100-200GB to /, and the rest to /home if I use a larger HDD or SSD.

i'm setting up self hosted email on a vps and i was wondering if anyone knows a good way to change how email addresses are parsed on my server, instead of the standard 1 user <-> 1 mailbox mapping. i know im not explaining this well, but one example i have in mind is how gmail works. you can add a + sign after your actual email address to have everything else after it ignored (e.g. lainon+extrawords@gmail.com is the same as lainon@gmail.com). another thing i'd like to do is have predefined "ranges" of email addresses (for instance: email000001@mydomain.com through email999999@mydomain.com) that all get sent to the same mailbox.
if anyone could just give me some keywords to look up, that's all i need. my problem is i dont know what this kind of software would be called, so i dont know how to search for it. can this be done with postfix? that's what i'm using currently but i'm not married to it or anything.

>How do I route all my traffic through tor first then OpenVPN into my vpn?
it's been a while since i've messed around with openvpn or tor for that kind of thing, but i think you can have the tor daemon run a proxy and then you can configure openvpn to use that proxy (on localhost). this isn't exactly what you described but i think it's probably what you meant. you'd be tunneling your vpn traffic through tor so your vpn provider would see a tor exit node instead of your ip and the server you're ultimately connecting to will see the vpn gateway IP instead of a tor IP.
https://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/9128/send-all-openvpn-traffic-through-tor
>which in my view defeats the purpose of my vpn usage being anonymous since its pretty much a given that they log traffic even if they say they don't
you know they can still identify you by your client cert, right? like.. thats just how vpns work. you might already be doing this, but unless you're using a properly anonymous vpn provider (paid for w/ crypto, no identifying information when you signed up for the account) you're not going to be anonymous to your vpn provider, even with tor. the only thing you'd be hiding is your IP.

Can guixsd be installed on non free hardware if so, does it have a way to add non free drivers?

Alternatives for universal USB installer in Ubuntu?

You're just trying to make a bootable USB, right? Try Unetbootin or Rufus.

Got OpenVPN set up on a VPS and if I only connect via my PC, it works perfectly. Likewise, no problems if I connect via mobile only. Yet if I connect via both devices at the same time, one of them stops loading web pages. Do any lainons have any clues as to what the problem might be and how I can fix it?

are you using the same key for both devices?

Which CLI/TUI password manager would you guys recommend?
I'd prefer something simple.

password-store (aka "pass") is great and very simple.

Is the Allwinner A20 still one of the best open source spyware free SoCs, or are there newer alternatives? Obviously
>NO INTEL
>NO AMD
Because of the bloated unsafe nature of x86 and their wierd as fuarrrk "features" like the ME and PSP plus who knows what else. Spectre and meltdown too.
Saw this table, and I want a SBC or laptop with 100% free hardware and software. Thinkpenguin offers some FOSS/Firmware WiFi dongles, so I can use them.

Should mention that games and video decoding aren't necessary as I can perform those actions on another platform, this would solely be for the interwebs, software development, and some other actions.
Hagbard Celine · 2019-08-11 20:47
I've been becoming less and less interested in video games as I get older. I'm at the point now where I basically just don't play them. However, to replace that hobby I've become quite interested in studying and learning about tech.
I currently work in an IT job (SharePoint administration [kill me pls]). This job provides me with a lot of opportunities to pivot into something I'm much more interested in (Sec and networking) and they will pay me to get the qualifications and certs to do so. I'm trying to create a working environment that is more conducive to study but I live in a small room atm so a laptop my best bet (I also travel a lot for work + visiting family), but i don't just want to get rid of my gaming rig. I want to use my old-ish gaming rig as a virtualization server that I can connect to from my laptop for setting up a home lab environment.
My questions really are:
- Is this something I can do?
- What would be required hardware wise? (I already have the gaming rig and an OK small cisco switch)
- I would rather user Hyper-V / Windows server, as I'm kinda familiar with how they work. Would this be easier to achieve with a *nix setup??
Any help/advice would be much appreciated my dudes. Have my favorite wallpaper in return :)

- Definitely.
- Nothing special, I've discouraged myself from using my virtualization setup altogether by giving it 64Gb RAM and 16 physical cores (the guilt...), it's only used for hosting ~500kb worth of documents now. That is to say, too much resources isn't a good motivator. 2Gb+ RAM and a dual or quad core i5 (for a remote desktop lab) is a perfect start. What you need for running a desktop and 10 tabs of Firefox.
- Start by installing SSH, then install and configure VirtualBox over SSH - in case you bork your lab and need to repair it remotely. Take a snapshot of the box before you use it and after program installation. When updating the box, back up your data, restore from snapshot, install software and restore data.
- Consider meticulously keeping all your data in one folder (for each box/container). Start including program config in your provisioning (e.g. Dockerfile) scripts after a while.
- If you don't need a GUI, it's nice to use long-lived containers (e.g. Docker) as a lab. They're lightweight, very amenable to access over the network (SSH), easy to image/back up, often come with a layered filesystem, automatic provisioning...
- Roll your own system of moving data in- and out of your container, provisioning of ssh_id etc., this should take less than 20 lines of scripting.
- Document your progress (notes + scripts) and use ~100 lines for the whole shebang.
Good luck! And cool painting!

Thanks very much for the answer, much appreciated. I'm not gonna lie there are a few things you've mentioned that I have no idea about lol, but that's just a opportunity to learn and it gives me ideas. I'll do some reading on docker and the other stuff you mentioned, like scripting it all myself (I think that's wayyy down the line though!!). I think I've got enough entry level knowledge to work up to having a machine with VMs on it that I can SSH into so I'll give that a bash first.
Thanks again :)

I encrypted my boot and root partition with LUKS. Works great, but for some reason in order to actually boot I need to does some hackery with crptomount on the grub console, and manually set my root lvm path. Is there any way I can automate this?
Leto Atreides I · 2019-08-13 15:36
Is there a way of encrypting backups without reformating the whole thing or having to keep extra software? I just want to plug my external drive in, input my password and run my backup script. I'm on Ubuntu
SHODAN · 2019-08-13 18:11

I know it's possible to have boot encrypted, but I thought you needed libre or core boot to do this smoothly. You can use cryptab to open other partitions as soon as root has been unlocked.

It would be more helpful you told people what universal USB installer did. You can use Etcher to image, but it's a bloated POS. Most people just use dd.

>ssh'ing into my VPS server
>promt shows up like this
anon@computer /[anon@computer] /$ It's a minor thing but it's fuarrrking irritating and it becomes extremely annoying when I'm dealing with anything with extremely long pathnames. It's not part of the server's promt either, $PS1 is
[\u@\h \W]\$\[\] So I'm not sure what's causing it.
