Puzzle
TheWired · 2018-05-27 09:05
I thought you Lainons might appreciate this.
There are 10 steps to the puzzle. It starts very simple but gets more complex with each step. Each step will give you information to discover the next step. Some knowledge of steganography, encryption, and ciphers will help. I apologize in advance for the difficulty of step 9 - it's driven some people to insanity - but it can be solved, I promise.
If you would like to enter The Wired your first step is...

Anyone figure out step 8 yet? I am not familiar enough with the file sharing software to know what folder the file is located. Since I can't upload a file myself, I'm not sure where it would be stored. I did notice that if I do it in the images folder I get a 404 error from nginx instead of from the website.

Anyways, I've spent enough time today on trying to solve it. Might as well also answer this
>How did you enjoy the first seven steps?
The typo in the first step makes it twice as hard as it requires noticing two things as opposed to just one. Step 2 was a lot easier than step 1 since the answer is just in plain text. Step 2's solution also kind of felt awkward like I skipped over the intended solution directly to the answer. Steps 3 through 7 were fairly straight forward and I was able to go through them without any problem, but I do feel like the ordering of them could have been done better. Overall the difficulty curve of these steps jumps all over the place. For step 8 it felt like everything was going great and I just hit a brick wall. Instead of it getting progressively harder, I went from steps taking several minutes to numerous hours. I guess that's how puzzles like these usually go though as if you miss something, you'll be stuck for a while. Even though I won't be able to solve it, I do want to thank you for making this as I haven't done one in a while. It's also been a while since I made one myself (One of the thing we did in our last one was creating a custom operating system that ran a script which would display a puzzle for the players to figure out. We also setup a phone number that when called it would read out the next hint)

I forgot to fix the typo before posting here, sorry about that. :(
>Step 2 was a lot easier than step 1 since the answer is just in plain text. Step 2's solution also kind of felt awkward like I skipped over the intended solution directly to the answer.
I think that's more of you figuring out where to look without having to dig much. Try running lain.help() in the console for how it was intended to be found.
>but I do feel like the ordering of them could have been done better.
Which order would you recommend? Remaking the puzzle in a different order is pretty trivial for me to do if I let the puzzle sit a while for people to finish up their attempts at it. I feel everything up until Step 7 is a few net searches away so gauging difficulty between steps was difficult when each step is kind of "Babies first ______" for its category.
>One of the thing we did in our last one was creating a custom operating system that ran a script which would display a puzzle for the players to figure out. We also setup a phone number that when called it would read out the next hint
I've tried more advanced puzzles that require reverse engineering a program or involved ARG in some way but they seem to be less popular and are far more work to setup. More work for less reward isn't as fun to make. :(

>Try running lain.help()
That's what I did. I felt like there was supposed to be something on the page that would have triggered that. I noticed that help function from the javascript from the site and just went from there. On easy challenge it's not unusual to just bypass the intended solution and achieve the solution a different way.
>Which order would you recommend?
I would rank 2 easier than 1, but I think it's fine the way it is due to 2 being the first "real" challenge of the puzzle. After that I think step 8 would be next. At least the cipher part of it Step 7 is the next easiest. It would have been funny if for step 7 you put a few == at the end to make people think it's base64 Step 3 would be next and would probably be the one I enjoyed the most. You picked the perfect image for what the challenge entailed signaling the correct solution to those who would know it. Step 4 is a kind of challenge that could be placed anywhere. I wouldn't mind it being placed anywhere. I'm not sure what Steps 5 and 6 were.
>reverse engineering a program
Doing something like this greatly reduces the potential "winners" to your challenge. To do proper RE you need an actual skill set and potentially tools the person might not have / know hot to use. I've seen some other creative easy ideas. For example an ARG which Dyson created they had you print out a piece of paper and fold it a certain way in order to get to the next step of the puzzle.

On easy challenge it's not unusual to just bypass the intended solution and achieve the solution a different way.
Previously it relied on people guessing what decrements/increments on the page and then testing what the limits were. I received some criticism that it was maybe a bit too obtuse so I added the function.
Thanks for the feedback by the way!

I feel step nine is far more difficult than the rest of the puzzle justifies and I feel bad about that. It's some pretty advanced steganography out of left field. Most people know where to look but not how to look and so get stuck on it for hours and hours and hours. I didn't intend for it to be as hard as it is.
A much easier alternative to step nine which better matches the difficulty of the rest of the puzzle can now be found where you found the video but with the same extension as the file name. Step eight will be updated to reflect this soonish.

Hello OP,
I've actually participated with your puzzle on 4chan.org/g/ , I am not really crazy about the reuse of the same puzzle for another image board.
Get your soykaf together, aside from that. Neat puzzle.
I might contact you once I have time, since I've made some specific puzzles for Lainchan as well.
