Tox is a decentralized encrypted alternative to skype developed by chan users for chan users. It supports text, audio, video, and group chats.
Come join Club Cyberia toxs largest group chat. You can get invited to the group chat by adding lainbot the friendly club cyberia group bot. Lainbots ID is:
"415732B8A549B2A1F9A278B91C649B9E30F07330E8818246375D19E52F927C57F08A44E082F6"
You will need to install a tox client. qtox is the recommended option but there are a variety of clients such as toxic for cli users.
Download links can be found on the description page at "https://github.com/qTox/qTox". Binaries are provided for Windows, OSX, and Linux. You can also build it yourself if you are feeling adventurous.
Once you add lainbot as a friend just type "invite 0" to get a invitation. You can also type "help" for more options.
lainbot should automatically send you an invitation when you start tox.
WARNING: Tox is a peer to peer program without servers just like torrents. This means that your friends on Tox can see your IP. If you are worried about this you need to use Tor. Luckily Tox has easy Tor integration, just go into your settings and setup the SOCKS5 proxy for anonymous chatting.

Remember that Tox is currently not as secured as you think. Check out their repo.

If you are implying people can read your messages you are wrong. There is no evidence that tox chat has insecure comsec, only the negative of it having not been audited.

i hope this soykaf picks up and gets better with time

There's been a professional FUD campaign against Tox for 4 years now and no one has ever shown the code or protocol to have security flaws. I'm not saying to trust Tox with your life, but I trust it more than anything else available there right now. It just is like kicking dead whales down the beach that it's garbage on mobile and development has been at a snail's pace.

This. It's pretty blatant. I wish I could know where they come from.
Tox is not perfect. But it's gone from a name and a logo to a mostly working application. I use the text chat all the time. I video call close friends, and the calls work great when both computers have stable connections. Tox for android used to not work at all, now I use it just fine. uTox on Gnu-Linux is so fast it's stupid. qTox on OSX and Windows is easy enough for my non-nerd friends to use.
Currently I'm trying to make a bot wirh RaTox and Ruby.
Jet Black · 2018-01-03 20:52
Ive been using tox for years now, its a nice project.
But sadly the one major flaw i experienced is that peer lookups arent reliable.
In any case give it a shot guys.
Nell · 2018-01-20 00:17
I've been trying to build a Tox bot with RaTox and Ruby. So far I have gotten it running and it accepts all friend requests.

ratox is my favorite client for any chat software, by far.

>please guys join the totally /pol/, I mean lainchan tox chat group
It gets boring to hear americans complaining and europeans going about social justice in their countries after a while...
Chan Siu Ming · 2018-01-24 06:24
decided to check this out again for the first time in years
just installed qtox on guixsd (you'll need the qtsvg package as well to get all the interface icons working properly) and it's great, i'm really impressed
does it work as well on nonfree operating systems and cellphones?

What's up fellas

If I run an XMPP server with OMEMO, and my friends are on that now, will Tox give us any benefits over that? What drawbacks would I be balancing those benefits against? Seriously asking because I want to use the best protocols, whichever they are.

This. What is the reason to use Tox when you have XMPP and Matrix/Riot?
It sounds like a nice idea, but the lack of offline messaging and support of multiple devices makes it really not interesting for me. Am I missing something?

I have it on android and my friends use it on OSX.

Decentralization, a/v calling.
Trinity · 2018-01-26 00:55

Really? I honestly did not think anyone would use it normally. I see it as a way to make other things run on Tox protocol. How do you have Ratox setup?
Nobody special · 2018-01-26 01:33

>Decentralization
That's nice, but I find hosting my own server to be effectively the same thing.
>a/v calling.
Tox can do that? Nice. I'll probably pick it up for that then, but that'll be its primary purpose to me, so is it really good at that? Are videocalls smooth? Are they secure?
Is it better than mumble?
Turner · 2018-01-26 01:37

Waiiiitaminute, you didn't know tox does a/v calling, you don't know about it's security, and you think a server is decentalized? Do you even know what this thread is about? Did you look at the website?
Same with everything else, video calls are only as good as your connection.

Why not?
I hate it when people marginalize really nice, easy, well thought out interfaces as somehow not being meant for human eyes, just the computer, because its based on a novel idea rather than doing things like preexisting things of its sort. Not being meant for normal people, just "developers" is another version of the same thing.
I use lchat with it, and keep its location in a file system as an environment variable. so,
cd $tox/friendname
toxchat(toxchat is just 'lchat -i text_in -o text_out').
which, I only do once cause I use it with a tabbed terminal thing.
ive also a small shell function 'toxonline.'
sending messages by just writing a file is really lovely, and the chat itself just being a file is too. It makes chatting and communication just part of the system, rather than some distinct, inscrutable thing cordoned off in a visual programs little alternate world.
also, its devs intended it for human beings to use for communication. They give you an exapmle of how to screencast in the readme, and the site its on's git repo has a few scripts they wrote to use with it.
though, this blog is actually kind of offtopic because what I love about ratox is the file interface, not really tox. I dont have an issue with tox but Itd be nice if I had something that just let the user have some address, and then you and your friend each make a pair of files, in and out. when you write to in, it appears on your friends 'out', and vice versa. you can make as many of these pairs as you want if you want seperate channels for transferring voice or video. You can write to 'out' whatever you want and it wont affect anything. The rest is up to you, however you want to use it.
Drano · 2018-01-26 02:14
I forgot to clarify, I added softlinks to each friend with their nickname instead of the tox id. as implied by $tox/friendname.

>you didn't know tox does a/v calling,
I remember people talking about it as a feature they were working on back on /g/. I'm glad they got it working.
>you don't know about it's security,
I know that the text chat is end-to-end encrypted because that's the whole point of it, but if I didn't know they can do videocalls then obviously I didn't know if the videocalls would be encrypted, or how, or how much lag the encryption might add.
>and you think a server is decentalized
Client-server architecture is the opposite of decentralization, but running the server myself gives basically the same benefits as decentralization. Hence, "Effectively."
>Do you even know what this thread is about?
/g/ wanting to make a FOSS skype-killer.
>Did you look at the website?
I did not.
