4chan now has a bitcoin miner built insite
People is struggling to fight it, I already tried some fixes and I'm not sure if they work plus I also have to get rid of the ones that are on my machine but I don't have malwarebytes and don't know what else to do
This is a very dark hour

I don't know if it has been removed or if my setup just blocks it from executing (there are also some in the threads that say there never was a bitcoin miner, just an anti adblocker) but I actually wouldn't mind mining for websites. Just remove all ads and mine in a way that doesn't eat CPU/battery and we're good.

It's not a miner. I don't care enough to change my IP to evade whatever reason this one is derezzed on 4chan so I'll reply here.
I stepped as far through it as I could this afternoon when someone noticed AdBlockers were breaking the 4chan CSS. I really doubt it was a security breach, so I guess g00km00t fulfilled his prophecy. Some of it seemed to be implemented poorly or incomplete. I don't feel like going through all of it again so I'll just dump some things from my clipboard of interest. There were no successful (coin)miners or ransomware implementations. Those are trolls. However, it seems g00km00t is datamining some things to be indexed for an advanced ad-distribution service (adglare, etc.) as well as likely selling data to this highest bidders at admixer. And a soykafty anti-adblock. Not going to include the stuff about argon.js as I didn't actually see anything about it when letting this ad stuff execute. It is very suspicious that it is reported from the same domain as one of the ones on 4chan, and "Argon" is referenced in the obfuscated js. But, yeah, there's old reports about it from previous things here: https://www.reverse.it/sample/b9a80ddbaf41d303b0ed9abb0f6aabf5f851dd39909aaead3cb3257474fd7dc4?environmentId=100
interesting bits from de-obfuscated js still in my clipboard:

You're fine. There was no miner-hijack that I saw ... unless everyone got infected with something while I was sleeping and I haven't read it yet, but I really doubt that. I'm not even sure how people brought the old Nemucod/Locky outbreak into this, but even that required running a script from an archive via e-mail, IIRC. I really doubt someone would have waited that long to modify 4chan further after everyone already noticed and push a malicious payload that requires burning high-value 0days to even be effective. I didn't see anything like that. Seems like fear of the unknown to me.
It's retarded if @hiroyuki_ni still hasn't made/authorized a statement about it yet.

I really want to return because 4chan is my home online and being away from it feels so barren, specially hard for me because /co/ is my homeboard and there is literally no other place to talk about comics that is chill or cartoons in general, I could go to plus4chan but it is about to close down.

ublock origin blocks the new scripts now (i think you need 4chan X to make css work) , but i wouldn't trust hiro. he will just pretend that nothing has ever happened.
the script at least has (at lest) two functions:
1) Anti-adblock (it breaks the css)

and apparently, it also contains some encrypted js from one of the hosts hiro added. Are they testing the waters or something?? this is 2ch all over again.

So almost all discussion about this on both /g/ and /qa/ seems to have been shut down, only one thread up on /g/ as we speak. It's like it never happened despite initial threads all reaching bump limit quicly, yet those shady domains still try to connect on my setup sometimes, yesterday it didn't happen at all but today it did again. So I think the gook hasn't changed anything. Suddenly banning archivers makes sense, pure coincidence some would think.
Can anyone help a tech iliterate recapitulate what happened?
>4chan itself serves a (possibly malicious) anti adblock script that tries to connect to certain 3 domains, breaking the sites css if it can't reach them

There's javascript on 4chan that poorly attempts to subvert ad-blockers while killing stylesheets and images if another part is unsuccessful at being displayed. It also communicates with those domains to load other obfuscated js payloads sent that (so far) only seem to basically be related to really sketchy ad servers that collect some data for their targeted ads. >>6646 The argon.js reverse.it link is FUD because the scary sounding stuff is actually just from wscript.exe as that is what the analysis system attempts to open it with by default. uBlock/equivalent can be used, but sometimes Chrome browsers may execute the js before it's actually blocked. If you want to be extra paranoid you can manually block connecting to those domains with hosts file, etc. 4chanX and uBlock were both updated to deal with this already I think. If your stylesheets are still broken 4chanX will probably fix. Also if you're paranoid you can set up your js/ad-blocker to a whitelist mode.

Ah that explains the weird behaviour earlier then, was freaking out over this a bit. Guess im going to block them on the hosts file then as my FF install is quite old so it's riskier to use it for now and other than installing another channel Chrome is my only choice for now.

That's because it's only one board. It's basically just a pay2use /b/.
If we had most boards be invite only I think it would help keep the "communities" separated (mostly speaking about pol/r9k here)

(Or is it a joke "just don't do it", like "you can do it when pigs fly"=="you can CPU-mine bitcoin when it doesn't use lots of power" and it just went over my head?)

Yeah I think he meant it mostly as a joke, but if there were a non-intrusive way for sites to make money off their users, he would be ok with it? That's how I read it at least

Yes but what about next time. What if one of his soykafty adservers are hacked. Dudes using some scetchy soykaf with many .RU domains. His anti adblock pushes that soykaf right though.
Yuki Nagato · 2017-12-25 06:21

If a website that you once trusted becomes untrustworthy, it's a problem. The inline scripts were only allowed to run in the first place because users trusted 4chan.org.
But you can only pull that trick once. Once users distrust the website and stop allowing it to run scripts on their machine, it can't do anything.
Those .ru domain adservers are not trusted to begin with, and any reasonable security-conscious user is already blocking them as part of a blanket block on third-party content.
Yu-ichi · 2017-12-25 06:48

I don't understand how users can be so pathetic?
I mean how hard is it to understand that once the site has started implementing shady stuff it cannot be trusted again.

It wont take much for hiro to undo the blocks that ublock put in. Its a cat and mouse game now. I really feel bad for the politcs board as its only a matter of time before he de-annonmizes them and sells the data. To sjws or feds or otherwise. Hes done this before.

Only on boards that are not /g/ or /qa/ as far as I can tell.

Jim(the current owner of 8chan) has a pig farm, and pigs will eat carrion. He's kind of a shady person so people joke about him killing people and feeding them to his pigs. Hotwheels has been missing since he took over 8chan, but that's probably because he's going to die from his fuarrrked up bone disease and doesn't want to spend his last years with a bunch of nazi spergs.
The Phantom Phreak · 2017-12-30 07:34
I'm feeling concerned, I want to save the other anons from 4chan, sadly seems like most of the user base doesn't care, outside of /g/ and /qa/ discussion about this is nonexistent and even less on other sites
like if some terrible disaster had happen and yet nobody notices.

What kind of "metadata" do you think 4chan has? The whole site is public. There are no members only pages or private messages or anything like that. Why would anyone pay for data they can just get from wget or a google search?
Unknown · 2018-01-07 12:01

IP addresses for each post, 4chan pass data for those posts, and email and payment information from pass users.
Advertisers love any type of information, and I think 4chan post history and board preferences would lend well to targeted advertisement. LE and skiddies would also be interested

Also whatever else your browser or environment is willing to tell. For example, which device are you using - leading to purchase power info etc. Your browsers tend to leak a lot, desired or not.
On the other hand this is the Net. This happens all of the time and nobody seems to freak out much, so why the fuzz? We are all screwed anyway. Business as usual.

People actually give their credit card numbers to 4chan. Golly the internet has changed since I was a kid.
>Advertisers love any type of information, and I think 4chan post history and board preferences would lend well to targeted advertisement.
Advertisers already get that from the ads on the pages and Google Analytics.
>LE and skiddies would also be interested
4chan has been working with law enforcement for a long time already that's nothing new.

It's like saying that Lainchan is a refugee camp for anarcho-communistic trannies who got offended by all the "racist memes" on 8/cyber/, judging from the posts like >>6648.
