Let's have a thread about Android customization and ROM shall we.
What custom ROM/apps/ icons would you recommend?
Nanashi No Gombe · 2017-11-08 09:48
If we're having this thread. I'm looking for:
1. Good open source keyboard. So far I only used default one.
2. Good SMS filter. Something that will check every incoming SMS and filter it depending on sender/content. If it's even possible.

Lots of cool soykaf in the fdroid repos.
>afwall+
iptables gui (root required)
>AdAway
blocks ads using the hosts file (root required)
>Noise
Signal fork with no gapps deps. Fully compatible with the play store version. Not a huge fan of signal, but at least i can connect with my friends that use it without bending over for the botnet. It's in the copperheados repo (you'll have to add manually if you're using lineage/google android).
>ConnectBot
SSH client. Also a decent replacement for the stock terminal emulator.
My phone is mostly for web browsing and texting so I don't have too much installed: icecat browser, conversations xmpp, K-9 mail client, OpenKeychain for PGP. Sideloaded the play store for Maps and some DFA app my work makes me use.
>>5547
>keyboard
The AOSP keyboard has worked fine for 90% of what i want to do. I recommend grabbing the stupidly named "Hacker's Keyboard" from fdroid too. It emulates a full size keyboard, which is handy if you ever use terminal apps on your phone. >>5555 AnySoftKeyboard is also good, but I haven't needed it.

Before my previous phone died I used to use LineageOS with f-droid apps only. The one great app that I can't stop from recommending to people is OSMand. It's way above average in terms of quality when compared to the rest of free software apps.
Since my phone died recently I decided to buy an Xperia X and install SailfishOS on it. It's very pretty, though kinda limited feature-wise which is a pain. What I really love about it is that it has a dalvik-like VM which enables it to run android apps, it's a godsend. I don't know if I'd use Sailfish if it wasn't able to run Firefox and OSMand.

I have a Samsung S5 phone with the default ROM. Should I install another ROM?
I haven't used an android phone in a while and I'm not sure how to do it. The official documentation of LineageOS doesn't say anything related to root the phone.
The main reason why I want to install it is because Samsung has a lot of garbage I can't delete and it makes the phone slow.

In your case you should use Odin to flash the custom recovery. TWRP is the usual recommendation for custom recoveries. XDA developers is where you'll find all the info you need.

Yeah, the only really risky part is installing the bootloader, that is actually rooting the phone.
Once the phone is rooted it is so simple that if you know how to install a 'user friendly' Linux distro, it is really no harder or even simpler than that.

just a guess: i'm assuming they want phones (and android devices in general) to be secure endpoints for their DRM. right now it won't do soykaf because you can still access netflix on a pc. but maybe the long term plan is to drop support for pc streaming entirely. only "trusted platforms" would be able to run netfix: game consoles, apple tvs, chromecast sticks, roku, etc. this would likely cut down on casual piracy because netflix could approach manufacturers and say "if you want us to port to your device, you have to do X Y and Z to keep people from screen recording when our app is open" (or whatever). it won't stop more dedicated piracy efforts, but netflix probably views people like us as somewhat of a lost cause anyway.

What's a good calendar solution, and a good to-do list solution? I need both to sync to my desktop for when I'm working. Presumably that's best done with an own/nextcloud and some phone apps?
To-do list needs to be able to create multiple lists at a minimum, deadlines and priority would be really nice too. I would just use notepad files, but typing and formatting soykaf on a phone is a pita, and syncing them is kind of a of a pain too - opening up Dropbox and hunting for TODO.txt every time I wanna tick off a task sounds like a regular nightmare.
Used to use Google calendar and Wunderlist, but I'm gradually continuing my self-extrication from the botnet.

There's no way developers can seriously expect normal people to do this soykaf. This is precisely why the botnet exists.

I think you can sync with a 3rd party for easymode, but I went self hosted using Radicale (http://radicale.org/). It's a while since I set it up but I remember it needed some work to get it running; maybe things have improved but it's not exactly normal person friendly.
Quite a bit more friendly than Next/OwnCloud though.

I really liked the stock oneplus camera app because it gives me the best quality but trying to install this on lineage just wont work. I am currently using opencamera which is pretty awesome but I have noticed that there is a lot of noise in my pictures with every camera app I have tried so I am assuming that the stock app has a lot of noise reduction build in but there is no noise reduction in opencamera. Does anybody know a good open source camera with denoising or an image denoising app.
I am also having gps problems (this started before I started using lineage). My gps started having a lot of trouble finding any kind of gps lock and it currently just can't find anything at all. Also if you don't want to switch launchers and trebuchet doesn't have a way to hide icons then there's nothing to do, so choose your poison. Either confront your hobby as an adult or keep trying to hide yourself under layers of oddly specific software that won't give you exactly the options you want.
Maybe code a launcher yourself with hiding options, it doesn't get more open than that. Or search for alternative foss launchers. Anyway, the only way of efectively changing/hiding the icon is via launcher options.

I know the specs are horrible, but it's an eReader and I plan to use it for books and some text based games and VNs. What roms would you recommend for this?
Armitage · 2018-06-27 14:10
So I recently replaced my phone, so my old LG phone was just sitting around not being used, so I converted it to an mp3 player/handheld gaming system. Since a custom ROM was out of the question like a lot of Cricket phones I simply disabled a lot of the preinstalled apps, never logged in with my Google account and installed fdroid for retroarch and vanilla music player. Then finally I put my SD card for my music and rom hacks, and it lasts a pretty good while on a single charge from the low res screen plus putting on airplane mode.
I'm seriously considering a wireless charging adapter and a Bluetooth controller that isn't an Xbox one controller since those act weird on Android 5. It's pretty nice. Here's a pic of my home screen, I just used Nova Launcher.

termux is amazing and you should use it
its a better terminal than any other terminal out there
(swipe right from the edge to open the multiple session manager, long press on 'keyboard' for a buttons for control, esc, tab, dash etc)
its also a linux environment (you can install and run stuff, theres a home directory etc)
its totally free, opensource, on fdroid (dont install from playstore unless you want to donate for stuff like styles and widget addons which are free on fdroid), and has a packagemanager (and apt), no ads
theres an api package for it that let you use shell script to interact with common android stuff like vibration, sms, gps, all that stuff
root isnt required but you can su from inside it and do all sorts of stuff

Not guy from before, but have used termux a bit. It is not a home menu layer like t-ui but a full linux environment for running linux applications (mostly terminal stuff, I have yet to see someone rig xorg up to it) on your phone without having root and to ssh into it.

what they said, think of it like a mini-debian you can boot on your phone--it even uses apt for package management. tons of popular command line apps are available for it, including mc, tmux, nmap, terminal-emacs, vim, git, etc. you can even import your oh-my-zsh config if that's your thing.

in thunderbird you can go to view -> message body as -> plain text and it will save that for all the emails you open after that. It does the whole link text<http://link url> thing, and it linkifies and even puts emphasis/italics/bold on text in *stars* and /slashes/ and stuff. You can view headers with view -> headers -> all

Hey, kinda unrelated but is there a way to get a recent version of Android working on a laptop?
I've already tried virtualbox and Androidx86. Androidx86 is way too demanding to operate without wasting a year executing just one thing.
Bluestacks and many other emulators run an outdated version of android (4.x or 5.x).
Did no one create an emulator with a more recent version?

You could look into RemixOS (sadly, discontinued).
I'm not sure if there is a standalone version but the official android emulator included with Android Studio should work better than most third party ones (I assume).

I'm looking for recommendations for non-treble ROM's or ways to root treble ROM's. Currently running Havoc OS because it's one of the only stable non treble ROM's i've found for my xiaomi redmi 4x (chinese botnet stock rom but its a cheap and solid device), but the devs are soykaf cunts that dont understand any basic thing like how OTA is supposed to update without having to flash from TWRP and that dont understand most people cant reflash from scratch every fuarkking update. Does anybody here know if there is a way to get dark themed notifications working on lineageos (rooted). I tried substratum with the default dark theme (paid themes aren't an option) but this seems to be pretty glitchy and often makes you end up with the same background as text color on the notifications. I was wondering if anybody knew a good preferably free software way of doing this.

Default lineageOS doen't support OMS, which is why substratum is glitchy there. You are better off with another one if you want to use substratum.
That said, lineageos 15.1 does support dark theme by default. Have you digged deep enough?

Lineageos seems to have a dark mode under display > style, but this doesn't seem to do anything to the notifications. I would prefer using something other than substratium but I haven't found any other application that is able to do this yet.

It absolutely depends on the theme you're applying to substratum. This is rooted Lineage 15.1.
Get a cracked paid theme and it'll probably color your notifications too.

>>12608
I tried that and I ended up with an application that "doesn't work in your country" and a second one which gave me my first actual android virus so I prefer just going with a free software solution if it exist because the theme I found for substratium seems to only work sometimes and it just seems to be really impractical.
Bobby Newmark · 2018-08-21 16:07
i've been having issues with lineageos not properly interfacing with my camera/flashlight hardware. i read a couple forum posts suggesting that using magisk fixed these issues for other people, so i figured i'd give it a shot (even if it doesn't fix my problem, it looks like an improvement over supersu). will flashing a clean lineageos image from twrp be enough to get rid of supersu and prepare my phone for magisk or do i need to do a full factory reset? it seems like since my phone is already rooted, i could just install the magisk manager and use that to install magiskSU, but how would i get rid of superSU at that point? asking here because most of the tutorials seem to be geared towards someone with a freshly unlocked bootloader and OEM android.
Technician · 2018-08-21 16:19
>>12609
>doesn't work in your country
What the crap? Which app told you that?
Still, I've searched for a lot of theming solutions and substratum seems to be the best alternative right now, since it depends on the theme what it colours and what not. I'd advice you to keep searching for free themes that actually colour your notifications.
Btw, default dark is a free theme that should color your notifications. I switched to the one shown in the screenshot (Valerie) because I've used default dark across 3 or 4 phones now and I grew tired of it.
Lain Iwakura · 2018-08-21 16:24
>>12610
Yes, you need to get rid of SuperSU before installing magisk, I've made that mistake before.
The best way to get rid of SuperSU is efectively installing a clean ROM image, and then flashing Magisk.
Btw, clean install implies wiping dalvik/ADT + cache, and that's basically doing a full factory reset.
Remember, going back to stock android != full factory reset.
Since we're on topic, if doing so still doesn't fix your camera problem, maybe it's a rom problem and you should try any other rom available to your phone that isn't Lineage based.

you may be SOL since huawei doesn't provide a legitimate way to unlock your bootloader and it isn't a popular enough device that people quickly find exploits (e.g. samsung). your best bet is probably just to look around forums to see if someone happens to have figured out a way to bypass the OEM lock. or if you know your soykaf i suppose you could come up with your own exploit, but that's way over my head.

"Gapps-free" as in not having any Google apps installed at all. This can only be done by installing an alternative ROM (for example LineageOS) that doesn't come with anything from Google pre-installed. This is not possible on all phones. If you want to go down this route, read about bootloader unlocking (not network unlocking or rooting, those are totally different things). This is something that requires a lot of reading beforehand if you're new to alternative ROMs.
Also, this will only let you avoid Google's scrutiny. Avoiding your mobile carrier's scrutiny (non-VPN'd network traffic, phone call/SMS records, location info) but still using that mobile phone network is impossible.
But the positive thing is that this should be much easier in the future due to something called Treble. Google intended Treble to be the solution to ancient security-hole-filled versions of Android sticking around for years, but it has a nice side effect of easy installation of alternative ROMs on phones with unlockable bootloaders.
F-Droid is an alternative app "store", though all apps on it are open-source and free, and often have a focus on privacy. It's quite easy to run F-Droid on an Android device, no bootloader unlocking or rooting necessary. I highly recommend giving this a try since it's totally zero-risk. It is flat-out impossible to cause phone problems by installing it.

I want to put RR (the only thing seemingly compatible for it) on my LG K20 Plus. I follow every guide, have a custom thing of TWRP made for it, yet I keep getting that "No Command" error. I can not find this documented. One guide (the only one that seemed to actually work) says you need to do Volume Down + Power to get into factory reset, then after factory reset it will boot into TWRP. It doesn't, it just factory resets then boots into "Welcome to Android!".
Using adb to reboot into the recovery partition is the only way I seemingly can, and that causes the "No Command" error. What do?

The error is that the recovery screen comes up with the android logo openand gears coming out of it, with the text "No command". Recovery options do not come up. This seems a normal result on some phones to force-recovery.
I don't see how every guide is different for the same phone. I don't see how I can not get into recovery the standard way. Bootloader is unlocked.

So I'll try posting here, seems roughly the right place.
I'm asking for a little guidance with using Tasker.
Very simple I want the phone to reboot when I send a text with the word reboot to it (I'll settle for a reboot if any text is received at all).
First off I create a task:
Task: Wait 5sec
System: Reboot
Then I create a profile:
Event: phone event: received text
Type: any
Sender: left blank (should work with any sender?)
Content: *reboot*
Activate Task above...
I seem to have 2 issues...
1) when I test (play) the task I get a red dot at the reboot task with message:
/shell runSync reboot root: true timeout 10000
bla bla bla
java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "su" error=13, Permission denied
So do I need to root my phone just to make this work? is that the issue... seems odd that I should need to root the phone for this option?
Problem 2, It is not responding to any text message... even to turn on light or something non root.
Could this be because of Googles new permission structure?
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-restriction-sms-call-log-permissions/
One other thing to note:
on the top taskbar/tray of the phone I see Tasker but it says "no active profiles" - I do have them toggled to on? WTF!
As a final issue I also tryed to use the Auto Notification intercept plugin for Tasker to read the sms but when i hit configure it says "warning you need to enable Notification access preferences.... Go there now" - so I do and the phone says "this feature isn't available on this device... is this just my phone or android or do I need root?
Running Android 8.1.0
Phone: JOY1 Model 5033x

N.B. am i right in saying Android 8.1.0 can not use wifi and 4g/3g at the same time...
e.g. if you use wifi to connect to a non internet device then the phone will not be able to browse the web as it will always push data over wifi and not switch to 4/3G if wifi is not hitting the spot.
Android could be so powerfull if google/phone makers did not dumb it down so much - there should be a switch that invalidates warrante but opens up the system.

Thoughts on the the F(x)tec Pro?
>Landscape layout
>Physical keyboard
>Headphone jack
>Rooting and ROM replacement are encouraged
I've been looking for a phone with a physical keyboard for a while now; Blackberry Key looked closest to what I wanted but Blackberry refuses to allow users to unlock the bootloader. However, I am concerned about how well things will function on a phone stuck in a layout that most Android apps are not designed for.

Never thought in spending more than 200 bucks on a phone.
Is an audio jack now a feature? I mean, there are still far more smartphones who still have one.
Neverheless the phisical keyboard is tge most promising feature, to then install retroarch and have the definitive game console on you pocket.

Bromite is the only good privacy browser. The compromise browser is Samsung Internet.

Being the lainon that posted, He started to use bromite, I now use it's webview with yuzu browser, the only open source webview capable of reaching it's full potential, the only flaw by far is that you cannot change the language on your header whitout changing it for the whole system, thing that bromite can do, nonetheless yuzu browser is superior in customizability, speed and has less overhead.

>Android could be so powerfull if google/phone makers did not dumb it down so much
80% of the phones run android, they'd like to keep it that way.
>there should be a switch that invalidates warrante but opens up the system.
But how would they be able to monetize your every move then?

So I have a Samsung J6 phone and need to use OTG for connecting to camera but also want to charge phone at same time...
I have brought a Y adapter (pic related) OTG cable to add power to the phone, but my J6 is having none of it - it will not charge - only operates OTG ignoring the charge part.
This behavior is regardless of if I plug in power first or camera first.
Some hacks on youtube say inserting a 100k resistor across some USB pins to make it work, but then I see people say this resistor is a different value between manufactures and models.
Has anyone any experience with this - considering OTG is a 2001 standard I find it so hard that this is not defacto from phones now days?!
1) Can my J6 do this at all?
2) If J6 cant do this, What phone (that is not too expensive, and easily available) can do this 100% guaranteed?
When phone with >1 USB port + HDMI.... !!!!!!!

I have this weird cheap phone laying around from a brand that doesn't really exist.
Anything i can do with that? It's pretty much unusable as a phone so.

Get Tasker installed - use it as a controller for anything! (well almost anything) - use the on board thermometer to send you a text if your fridge gets too warm?
Connect to a bluetooth relay and remotely/automaticly switch you dragon dildo from 12v to 120v when audio levels exceed 80db?
I dunno what do you need/want to do?

I got a Key1 the other day:
>The physical keyboard is nice; I hate virtual keyboards
>The virtual buttons are a mistake, too easy to accidentally push when using gestures, should have just made three more physical buttons
>You are forced to use the BB launcher and keyboard in order to use the keyboard properly
>I ripped most of the BB apps out and replaced them with Fdroid things (BB10 icons are very aesthetic though)
>No root or bootloader unlock, had to lock it down with ADB package removing + Orbot + NetGuard
>The whole thing is muscle memory torture, the on button is on the left and the physical keyboard takes a hot minute to get used to
It's pretty decent, but I am a nostalgic Canuck so take that with a grain of salt. I hope Fxtec makes something good to compete.

Is galaxy nexus still a decent phone? I want to install Replicant OS on it. I use phone for crypto trading, to check news, occassional podcast/music, offline maps when I hitch-hike, Anki, and mainly for wifi/usb tethering I don't open thosands of social media apps at once, I don't watch YouTube on a phone, I don't play games, nor do I consider phone something deeply personal and the neccessity I can't live without. I just need something with great battery life, free software, and small form factor. Thanks.

The Galaxy Nexus never had great battery life. It was pretty poor and can't run modern android. Seems like a Galaxy S5 is what you want. Swappable battery, headphone jack, SD card, water resistant, runs LineageOS. Good traveling phone.

I have an S3 that is 5 years old and still works like a champion. It was such a widely popular phone there are still ROMs being made for it, you could run newer versions like 7 or just use replicant. Swappable battery, aux, SD card but not water resistant. You can get a used one for quite little money and the batteries sell for liek 10 yuropoor bucks a piece. It's also old enough to not have been part of this stupid trend where every phone is fuarrrking gigantic.
Be sure to get a GT-I9300 not the meme mini or neo version, else OS support is going to suck.

Yeah, on the second thought I'd rather get S3 than Nexus. Also I remember that sexy black color on Amoled, kinda want to own one. My only concern is that I can get Nexus 5 for even cheaper than S3, but no Replicant and Lineage OS still has proprietary blobs.

Do any of you run the Moto E4 as a daily driver with a custom Mod? I feel lazy to change mine but I just rooted it so I might as well bite the bullet.

I remember AMOLED being the really psyched up feature back in the day, it has real appliance in battery saving schemes (completely black themed apps and launcher) too.
> Oh wait, Replicant doesn't support GPS
such is the sad state of affairs, all the more reason to hype the librem or eoma68 dream. If you need true freedom, not even a dumbphone is going to offer it to you. Using lineage without any gapps/microg flashed is still a considerable improvement, but you might just want to consider offline maps instead.
