Smatglasses thread.

I don't want a VR headset, I want smartwatches.
My biggest problem with the way VR and AR are developing now is that they are bulky products you would not wear outside your house.
What I want is something that I can put on my head casually, like I put on headphones when i want to listen to music. Something that I can wear while waiting for the bus on the bus stop. Something that I can wear while sipping coffee in my local cofee shop alone.
My question is, what are the best and least conspicuous smartwatches currently on the market?
Another bonus is if the manufacturer at least pretends to be conscious of my own or anyones privacy.

>I don't want a VR headset, I want smartwatches.
I'm guessing you mean smartglasses like in the thread name.
It's fun, I'm an android dev and I've been working with various smartglasses in a couple of AR projects.
The truth is that they all fuarrrking suck. I wouldn't use them outside of my workplace even if they asked me to do it at gunpoint.
I still haven't found a practical use for them. At least for me, there's no justification on having a screen attached to your eyes when you can casually just take your phone out of your pocket, do whatever you need to do, and then keep walking.
Assuming you're an enthusiast and you don't mind the practicality of the situation, I guess you'll have to wait a couple of more years before the technology is small enough to be wearable outside.

You are right, i meant to say smartglasses.
For me pulling out a phone and starting an app defeats the purpose of AR.
For me an idealized AR is one that is just there, it is part of your environment. And well glasses are really just a precursor to holograms. Since hologram technology is not yet advanced enough, glasses are the next best thing.
Holding my phone up for more than 5 minutes while walking is a challenge even when I am holding it at waist level. Imagine how challenging it is to hold it up for 5 minutes while holding the phone at shoulder level to look at AR stuff.
And basically I just want to take a walk in the park with my waifu :P

What do you want your smartwatch to do?
If you want something that respects your privacy, simply pick a version without internet connectivity.

>smartwatch
Smartglasses.
Basically I want it to be a HUD(heads up display) for life and I think that the entertainment possibilities are enormous.
You could i.e. have an app that when you point your smartglasses to an object it shows you a couple of funny memes about said object, if they exist.
People could add hidden easter eggs around places that you can see only with AR. People could just put images mid air. Dick pics on actual clouds.
Someone could make a trippy AR without having to actually get high.
You could even watch porn in public without anyone being able to notice what you are watching.
Or as I said previously, someone could just make a very good waifu app.
As for privacy, yeah, i would want internet connectivity, however I would like some kind of airplane mode toggle. I would also like to have enough flash storage for offline use of things. And tor support.
Or perhaps some kind of mesh networking, again for privacy.

Holy soykaf, now I have a mighty need and it's your fault.
If that's the case then my original advice stands. Either get used to bulky crap that'll make you look like soykaf or wait till there's an affordable, slim, hopefully open source option.

A big point of SEL was that you don't NEED smatglasses/AR autism to interface with the wired. Networked computing is a just convenient vehicle for babby's first trip into the collective unconscious, baka.

Yeah, I would never want to get into the collective unconscious.
However, ghost in the shell alike getting into computers but without the collective unconscious would be sweet.
And all of that is off topic anyways.

If you want to go on a walk with your waifu, How about trying tulpamancy. You can basically split off a part of your consciousness to become a seperate person, and you can even very realistically visualize them and communicate with them like a real human bean. Like if I told you to imagine there was an apple on your desk, you could do it and in your minds eye it's kind of like the apple is there. Now imagine if you spent a really long time practicing to do this with your tulpa, you can effectively have them exist in real life from your perspective. And if you make your tulpa look and act like your waifu then problem solved and no data-mining NSA bullsoykaf involved!
of course it's hard and probably not really worth it but it's an interesting idea, basically turning your own brain into an AR machine instead of buying some hardware to do it for you.
polite sage for off topic
Anamika · 2017-11-19 08:41
Smartglasses would be great, i just want turn by turn walking directions though. And how well do they work if you already wear glasses? I know you would have to switch to contacts if you didnt use them primarily.

That's completely off topic and also we already had a thread about this and the dangers of convincing yourself that your imaginary friend is something else than an imaginary friend.
Splicer · 2017-11-19 15:26
what you seek is already out there, they are mostly prototypes an proprietary, even one company had a deal where if you bought into their beta set, they would throw in their first gen ones for free, also some of them have ideological devs who don't want people using them for watching videos (i.e. they only do AR)

fuggggg
https://laforgeoptical.com/ seems the most promising (they start to ship next month/january if you preorder for 600) but it looks like they went full on corporate mode and are working to integrate google and apple into the glasses, also they dont want any 3rd party partners, and you need an account to use any of their services

Am I the only one who sees an AR TV with videos playing inside of it as a cheap hack to bypass that silly restriction?
They should just deal with it rather than put useless restrictions.

who could have predicted this?

I have just finished Dennou coil which is a scifi anime set in the near future. It's storilyne centers on AR smartglasses and as OP I must say I love it and their concept is amazingly similar to mine.
Zhora · 2017-11-23 00:16
And in that anime it does not seem like everythong is on the cloud either.
