Hi, lainons, I want to buy vr glasses and need your advice. I want the most free ones (as in freedom) to develop some games for them. The main feature should be open api with possibility to interact with glasses monitor like with regular one, to get data from sensors and do whatever I want. Htc vive look like what I need, but they use some sensors placed in the room and I don't want to use them. Maybe you know about some cheap and hackable chinese vr glasses that I can order?

Bumping for interest

I admit I'm not too knowledgable on the subject but I doubt there are any free ones out so far. It's still too niche and expensive. It's gonna take a while.
>tfw VR was proprietary right from the get go

You can always grab a cardboard vr with an android phone and program stuff away

I know what you mean but as far as I know is the closest you can get to free open VR

I wonder if it's possible to use HTC without sensors in the room. Let's say you just want to sit in your chair and control your game using gamepad/keyboard/whatever. Can you do it?

You could attempt to force disable accelerometers? or you could get a screen headset (no acceleratometer, just simulates a big ass screen on your face)

I know this is a buzzkiller but i need to point out that the current virtual reality won't be the revolutionary technology it has been advertised as, the ads are made up of pure deception, this is not the tech the market is expecting, we need to keep waiting

You're looking for OSVR: http://www.osvr.org
It is a complete pain to set up (for instance, on my system, the default view was 90 degrees off to the left and it took me a few hours to just center it up. Even getting into the kit is a real adventure- you seriously have to wire yourself up like you're jacking into the matrix.
Basically, you start a server for the unit- once it's running and your headset and/or camera are connected, you can launch something like SteamVR and it will hook into the unit and crash repeatedly until you play around and get the settings just right, and then it will work.
Once it's working, you can access it with stuff like Unity or whatever.
Not for the faint of heart, but it's open source and easy to work on from a hardware perspective if you're into that.

I'd argue that it's just being used incorrectly. The tech is very cool, but it's only one component of a "true VR" system.
The problem with the "answer" to this is that it's a bit...esoteric...shall we say? For some reason, very few developers are focusing on how visual stimulus can be used to induce novel states, especially in conjunction with microhaptics.
I've only found two "papers" on some nowhere blog that go into more detail about how you could use existing tech to get closer to "true VR," but it's a task that requires a lot of specific outside-the-box thinking and expertise- focusing on accelerating the suspension of disbelief on the part of the user and manipulating their experience through illusions. The guy who wrote them could be crazy for all I know, but it's novel thinking that seems to be on the right track to me.

IT fully is without that whole trickery. You just don't use room cameras. SteamVR will recognize whatever part of setup you have connected and use that. Source, I usually play games only with the headset and normal controller. The rest doesn't even need to be connected.

It's not like you have much options. I haven't heard about anything other then Android based solutions: Cardboard, Daydream, Gear VR and then Oculus and Rift. I tried all three of them on consumer side and Android wasn't even such a terrible experience on HD+ display when used with Rifcart or similar.
I actually predict that by some stupid joke it will be the future of VR if they ever standardize it so you can easily connect it with USB to PC and use Open VR / Steam VR and accessories like controllers, room scale cameras. Good resolution phones have a capability to be pretty solid VR screens with some standalone capabilities and could easily be granularly extended with more hardware.
It's obviously not there yet so I ended up with a proper VR headset, but still. Pushing Android based VR is as far as you can get to open platform.
On software side there is OpenVR SDK, api from Valve that is open source and you can use the Vive with OpenVR without Steam.
