The Agony of Ricing

Zhora · 2017-10-24 01:28
I need your help lainons. For the past few weeks I have been using i3wm. Though I love the functionality, I can't do anything without being assaulted by the eyesore that is my attempt at ricing. I have things to do, but my OCD forbids me to do anything but make it look coherent. Nothing I do seems to make it better. Any recommendations on other tiling WMs that are easier to rice, or some scripts that would help? I'm using Trisquel and for whatever reason it doesn't support the repos that make Pywal and other cool programs work. I've tried to install them but no luck. If anyone else is using Trisquel I would really like to know what you use. Thanks in advance for saving me from my OCD lains

>>5191 Give up. Form isn't important, function is. You'll get farther in life if you disregard looks and care about the content.
The Phantom Phreak · 2017-10-24 06:35
>>5194 >form isn't important It is. If something ugly as soykaf it's distracting. Turn your terminal text to lime green on pink and tell me if using it is the same as using the old color scheme.
Elliot Alderson · 2017-10-24 12:27
Default i3 looks quite nice and isn't distracting. I don't get the obsession with ricing and anime wallpapers.
Unidentified · 2017-10-24 17:43
But i3 is like the easiest twm to rice, the program itself already gives you a config file all you have to do is adjust colors. I "riced" my i3 2 years ago and I still use the same config.

>>5191 Alright, give us a screenshot. To fix it we have to look at it, the same way cancer surgeons have to look at cancer during the OP. Just kidding, but do give us a screenshot and pastebins to your configs.
Dox · 2017-10-24 21:26
I run i3 on trisquel, and I'm a complete noob at linux. It was super easy to rice, took me a day because I was learning from scratch. I just followed this guide for the most part, although it's all set to fit my theme rather than this guy's theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1I63wGcvU4&list=PL5ze0DjYv5DbCv9vNEzFmP6sU7ZmkGzcf Like seriously, if I can manage to rice it with just a few youtube videos and startpage searches (how to make titlebars toggle-able for example) then I'm sure you can do it, I'm really not good at this sort of thing normally.

OP here >>5194 >give up did that last month, it still looks like soykaf >>5210 Okay >>5212 I did the same thing but some things that worked for him didn't work for me. For example, when I installed the Arc GTK theme it did change the colorscheme, but it also added dashed white lines to every element in every menu. I didn't change the bar/blocks because I think they are fine for now. If you host your config file on github I would be really interested to see it. I'm coming from Mint where things usually "just werk". I didn't mind doing the OS config process and fixing the wifi and sound and whatnot, but making it look nice is really killing me.
Agent Jones · 2017-10-25 05:02
>>5195 There's a difference between making things hard to read (green on pink) which has an effect on function and just making things ugly (green on black) which doesn't matter. >>5217 >did that last month You obviously didn't, otherwise you wouldn't be posting these things here.
ptdel · 2017-10-25 05:22
>>5191 not sure if you're dead set on i3wm, which a lot of people seem to like. I've been really happy with dwm for a few years now. nice clean config.h for everything--gets compiled in. If you're on archlinux, you can just use `asp` to grab the PKGBUILD, modify it to your liking, re-run with makepkg. idk
Unidentified · 2017-10-25 06:28
Awesomewm is also an option if you already know Lua or want to learn it.
Arisu Mizuki · 2017-10-25 11:42
>>5217 OK. I think your problem is that you did not rice hard enough. The only things I see riced here is the GTK/QT theme. Your i3bar and i3status are basically default. Same for your window frames. Have you even set up a background image with feh? To fix this you have to jump into the i3wm config(probably in ~./i3/config), (/etc/)i3bar.conf and (/etc/)i3status.conf. No other way around that. In fact i3wm ricing is all about those and similar config ricing. You will have to pick and choose colors in hex codes. But you also have to take care of color compatibility. A great tool for both generating hex color codes and for picking out compatible colours are websites like these ones: https://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_picker.asp https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/ https://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html#fg=33FF33,bg=333333 Welcome to the world of color compatibility and contrast headaches. Minimalist wallpapers are like cheat codes to easy design. As an example look at some of my own ricing successes(note I moved away from Ubuntu to Debian/Gentoo, this is old):

William Holtzer · 2017-10-25 13:36
>>5225 And I forgot to add... if you want to just know the hex codes of some colors that already are on your screen, then install gpick.

ptdel · 2017-10-25 15:34
>>5230 I appreciate opposing viewpoints and form my own opinions based on what differentials from those viewpoints seem most meaningful. I don't look at conservatives or liberals with the dogma they view each other with. >>5233 more different perspectives. Conservatism seeks to preserve the good, Liberalism seeks to change the unjust--both should be appreciated and considered. >>5235 also this, I'm a centrist entirely. Buddha was correct when he said the middle path is ideal. Extremist idealogy is logic without discipline. On top of all this, by saying I'm a centrist I can effectively trigger just about everybody regardless of what their stance is
The Phantom Phreak · 2017-10-25 16:11
>>5236 Well liberals are actually centrists. Unless you are from the USA where politics has shifted so far to the right that you have a right center and a right party duking it out.
ptdel · 2017-10-25 16:24
>>5237 I am indeed a burger, as my news sources indicate. I agree with you, it's something I attribute to our failed educational system. Conservatives are overly concerned with social issues and not tax reform, and Liberals don't realize they are adopting the same tactics and dogmatic mentality they dislike in their counterparts. We used to enjoy the benefits of manufacturing, high exports, and more equitable wealth distribution so we had to reason to even care what god our neighbors worshipped or how they voted. Now everybody *must* adhere to one of two tribes, and neither side seem to care that they've almost completely estranged the military tribe that--frankly--makes us all we are. (for the record, not mil or a larper, I just know where my freedoms come from)

OP again >>5225 >didn't rice hard enough I hate to admit it, but you're on the money. I have i3 on a secondary thinkpad that I've been on intermittently. Also the links you provided will help lots, thanks for the advice >>5230 noted >>5221 >>5222 I'll give them a look This thread seems to be going off topic, but thanks for the help anons. If this thread isn't pruned by next week I'll post an update. If it is then I'll put results in the desktop thread.

>>5191 >Any recommendations on other tiling WMs that are easier to rice, or some scripts that would help? Your machine isn't the problem, you are. Make it functional for you and don't spend more than 30 minutes worrying about it. It's a waste of time caring too much about what something only you will see will look like. >>5217 It looks perfectly fine. Personally I'd remove the titlebars from the windows and the context menu from the terminal, but that's just my preference and really doesn't matter functionally.

>>5191 There's a cool tool called LARBS (found on http://larbs.xyz) that runs a script to automatically install and configure a pre-made rice (if you use Arch), and then you can just fiddle with the configs to get exactly what you want. That way you don't have to spend literally hours setting the whole thing up. Pic courtesy of the site, I haven't used it personally but I've heard good things about it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1I63wGcvU4&t=412s here's a good three part series that helped me get i3 on my main computer looking more or less presentable. the guy presenting it basically shows you how he put together his own theme, recommends some useful additional software to use with i3, and explains a lot of how to set up and edit your config though maybe i'm not the best person to ask since all my computers except my desktop just run the basic i3 bar with the default debian desktop
