What does /Ω/ think about React OS?
I like it a lot and even started studying programming to contribute to it but the idea of a FOSS clone of Windows seems hard to understand to linux enthusiasts.

I really hope it becomes something that's fully fleshed out one day, but as for now, I have heard it's buggy and un-usable day-to-day.

because it is still on alpha and there is no beta in sight and 7 years is too hopeful for that.

I think it's a good idea personally. I've tried it for weeks at a time but as >>5046 states it's far too unstable right now for daily use. It would be mega cool to have something that was foss but could also run games ( yeah I know WINE, some soykaf really doesn't play nice with it though.)
It's a very interesting project, I wouldn't write it off just because you hate windows. It could help a lot of people "convert"

>The idea of a FOSS clone of Windows seems hard to understand to linux enthusiasts.
I think this pretty much sums of my thoughts on ReactOS, it's not bad, but I just don't understand why anyone would want to use Windows, even if it was free software.
Agent Smith · 2017-10-26 08:46
>>5039
From what I understand, many of the ReactOS developers are reverses engineers primarily trying to understand Windows better, not to build a usable clone.
Jet Black · 2017-10-26 12:59
>>5257
And yet there's the great irony that whenever Windows source code leaks the React developers have to take precautions not to look at it lest they get sued into oblivion for copying code.

I was reading that Wine doesn't have a proper clone of DirectX and simply uses a wrapper to run games on OpenGL, ROS has plans for a proper clone of DirectX but that won't be possible on the current state
>>5247
Muh gayms, muh word

Where you heard that? ROS is meant to be an usable clone

From what I understand, ReactOS and Wine share ideas and code. I think Wine will always be a better way to run Windows binaries outside of Windows.
The Fin · 2017-12-07 07:07
it's a wasted effort
people don't use *nix just because windows is proprietary
they use *nix because windows is inferior in every conceivable way and aspect
in order to run windows software, you don't need more than a compatibility layer
they should be contributing to wine or something instead
Jane Doe · 2017-12-07 07:43

this
instead of trying to make your proprietary soykaf less soykaf, use the good stuff and make it do what you want it to do instead.

There's free online word, tho it requires an account.
Gaymes work fine under wine, at least every game I tried.

Mustdie is better in 1 (one) solitary way. It's standardized. Linux is too, technically, you can install the same base system on workstations, but it's in some magic way incomprehensible to computer illiterate monkeys who will use these workstations.
BloodCat · 2017-12-07 11:41
Personally I like the idea, but have a feeling they will inevitably go the Vista+ route and bloat the hell out of it just like Linux DE's have done just to get more users away from Windows. I have followed the project for many years, and any time I try it I always manage to bsod it in qemu somehow (hey, at least they got that part right).
I could definitely get some use out of it, as a lot of games I have do not run very well in wine (font rendering still is like kicking dead whales down the beach, mouse input issues that have gone unresolved for years, input lag, crashes/exits, extreme performance issues as always) and keeping XP around just to play them is probably not sustainable in the long term.
The way I see it, nobody complains about FreeDOS (or DosBOX for that matter) being a clone of MS-DOS or Haiku being a clone of BeOS (which is also proprietary) so why complain about ReactOS being a clone of Windows?
It is almost as if "Windows" is a trigger word for FOSS obsessed techno-feminists or something.

I share similar sentiments, Lainon, but i still kinda keep my hopes it really becomes better and catches on as a fully fledged FOSS alternative of Windows, that is very (reasonably) close to being fully compliant with new NT family (post-XP releases).
>so why complain about ReactOS being a clone of Windows?

That's only your opinion. Why do you think it's worse than Windows in every possible aspect? Have you ever used Windows for a good amount of time before? Windows has some really strong points, like being straightforward yo use OOB if you just want to get things done, also you seem to be forgetting how much of a clusterfuck the audio subsystem on Linux is, especially for more professional purposes.

>Windows has some really strong points, like being straightforward yo use OOB if you just want to get things done
Productivity entirely depends on what people are used to and thanks to Microsoft's unchecked monopolization tactics, most kids grow up with Windows in school and such. I don't think that someone who has never seen a computer before will find Windows easier than something like Mint. Things like the Ubuntu software center make much more sense in terms of using a computer but people's ideas of how computers work is warped by preexposure to Windows, that's all.
>Have you ever used Windows for a good amount of time before?
I'm not the person you are responding to but Windows is pretty fuarrrking useless as a development environment. I have never seen a Windows machine in a workplace which doesn't rely on hacky Unix layers like Cygwin and Git bash and mingw. The new Linux subsystem is pure garbage too because it's basically an isolated container with no access to the rest of the system. Have you ever tried to use the new built in ssh server? Oh my god.
What do you think Windows is particularly good at anyway? I bet most people can do basically everything they do on Windows with a ChromeBook.

Wine and ROS share lots of developers, developments in ROS are good for Wine

There are plans to make a clone of directx for that

Multimedia production is what windows is good for
Yamaoto Toshi · 2017-12-07 21:08
Good idea, hard to execute due to MS and their copyrights. I don't have much high hopes personally, Windows is mostly for games for me now, so it makes more sense to just have a gaming computer and use Linux on a separate machine for everything else. Any other option just borders on insanity.
Faye Valentine · 2017-12-08 09:34

>Multimedia production is what windows is good for
Be more vague.
Do you mean there is something about how Windows is designed as an OS that makes multimedia production better than other OSes or do you mean Windows is popular therefor has more software?
If anything OSX is the "good for multimedia" meme. But that's because Apple controlls the hardware and ensured that Macs came with suitable simd instructions that actually does make multimedia processing faster.
Delilah · 2017-12-08 11:43
>>6470
I'm not the guy you are replying to, but I'm going to go with Windows is popular and therefore has more software. Let's be real though, Windows might as well just be called Xbox OS or something because people here mostly just play games on it. And games is the main thing Windows does really well that Linux or MacOS don't do.
Hiro Protagonist · 2017-12-08 20:43
>>6470
Well yes, it has more software and more comprehensive media libraries.
Apple was really good for multimedia production years ago but seems like that waned out, dunno why but I heard the hardware isn't as good.
I will like to see how would video editing or music production fare on linux

A big part of that has been the obsession with thinness in their laptops and desktops. In the 2015 MacBook video posted, the guy has to make some makeshift water cooler for the laptop to prevent the CPU from throttling down. It's pretty crazy.

Windows is ideal for youtubers who want to stream, play games, maybe do some music production and also edit their videos in one OS.
