Libreboot thread

Yuki Nagato · 2017-10-04 20:28
This thread is for general discussion about libreboot.(Please remember to always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. This is a soyakf opening post, you could have also summarized the subject matter and your specific usage of it or elaborated on libreboot, please try to write better opening posts in future.)

>>4848 I'm trying to libreboot my asus C201, how do you change the image behind GRUB in libreboot ?
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2017-10-04 22:00
>>4850 I am pretty sure that is done without libreboot.

I use libreboot on my thinkpad x200, I bought it from minifree.org but they don't sell x200s any more. I have no complaints so far and I've been using it for over a year now.

>>4851 >>4852 You can do it inside the libreboot image as well. I agree that it's not a particularly difficult thing to <insert search engine here>.

Librebooted my x200 yesterday but it has intel wireless card so I can't install fsf approved distro yet.

Looking at the git repo of Libreboot and it looks like somebody with Coreboot got a Core Quad CPU running on a T500 with ME disabled. I've got a T400 and it's basically the same just a beefier processor, so it'll be interesting if they can get support into Libreboot.

>>5115 mfw too lazy to look it up rn (I wish you had included a link :<) but will definitely look for it, seems interesting as I have been interested in getting either a T500 or W500 with the 1920x1200 screen. This is a really great time to be a free user!

Since libreboot is a fork of coreboot, I guess this is the closest thing to a thread about coreboot here. Anyone heard of the Librem 13? It's a 13.3" laptop that has an i7 and now has Intel ME disabled (running past the 30 minute mark), which is pretty amazing. Apparently now they're also going to disable them on their other laptop models, which is pretty nice. Maybe they'll convert them to running libreboot? They're rather pricey and look like a macbook though, so I might just stick with a thinkpad. https://puri.sm/posts/purism-librem-laptops-completely-disable-intel-management-engine/ https://puri.sm/products/librem-13/

>>5153 Hardware upgrades and troubleshooting are why I need to be able to take apart the laptop. This thing better not be some closed hardware thing like Apple does. And I'm just guessing here, but I bet their PureOS ships with binary blobs and nonfree firmware by default. I've got an EOMA68 coming and looking more forward to that than this thing.
Neo · 2017-10-23 15:21
>>5173 >PureOS ships with binary blobs and nonfree firmware by default It would be too much of a crude joke, but they explicitly state they have put atheros wifi cards with libre support and only had to use Intel processors because of sane gpu drivers. >Hardware upgrades and troubleshooting are why I need to be able to take apart the laptop There are not much components you would "upgrade" even in 10 year old thinkpad. Disk, ram, maybe faster wifi board, and....? That's it, nothing to upgrade, honestly. Esoteric encryption accelerator modules, FPGAs cost too much money and are too rare to be in common use. More DDR2 ram won't make your computer faster because even new cheap computers have 4 times faster DMI with the same amount of memory, you remember socketed processors? they were made so not to allow people change them on laptops, but because of high amount of manufacturing fails in order to be able to swap it faster in field conditions; it sounds like a joke, but Quad-core mobile sandy bridges off chinese markets still cost 2 times more than fresh Coffe Lakes. Unless you imply something like 51nb motherboard mods, which are nice being a good way to prolong the life of a sturdy milspec shell, but you need to perform full disassembly even on thinkpads anyways. EOMA68 is silly scam from autistic guy who fell out of reality in 2011. What's so upgradeable in a system which has 25 year old main system bus in form of IDE pins? USB 2.0, 768p lvds in 2018, really? These so-called "environment-friendly compute cards" would produce more e-waste than your standard apple computer in the long run. The whole concept of "computer module" falls apart when you see real world hardware security concerns and know that most humans have computers with better performance in their pockets already, complete with battery, screen, and docking connector for external video and peripherals, they just don't use them that way because they don't need to.

>>5176 Are you kidding?? Don't you know you can upgrayedd(tm) a 1st gen core 2 duo to a 2d gen one?? In all seriousness, tho, yes; the tendency is much more likely to just keep on being bad bundles of closed hardware becoming smaller and smaller. It seems our option, really, is to just keep on supporting coreboot, and help the project grow, even if it never goes full mainstream. At least I'll know my board doesn't leak passwords to the NSA automagically out of the box.

Looking for Libreboot compatible or FLOSS-respecting hardware is tough. Looking around I see either an ASUS KGPE-D16 with an old AMD Opteron from Vikings which is already expensive, or a spanking new POWER-9 for close to the same for just the board alone. I really want one.
