the FOSS smartphone is upon us, please do your part for an open society and spread the word

Just how affordable (or the opposite) is it likely to be?
Quite a few of us couldn't afford that new iPhone even if we wanted it (which we don't).

Purism hardware isn't what you'd call affordable, and it isn't really free either. While I respect people trying to bring a non-android linux to the smartphone world, I'd rather see PostmarketOS made available for my phone.

I'm looking into a Replicant phone right now. Purism hasn't really been honest with the laptop they made because it comes with nonfree firmware and intel ME, so I don't expect them to be able to meet the 100% free/libre phone goal either when other projects that are similar have failed. There is no choice but to go Replicant and be mindful of what you put into your phone because the baseband firmware is signed and proprietary as well as the bootloader. Goodluck, I guess.

Your software is free as the hardware that is running it.
Call me when we have a FOSH phone
Spooky · 2017-09-18 06:34
I hate to wage slave for purism, as I'm also not comfortable with some of their choices, but I do think the Librem could be a really great thing, and some things mentioned in the thread don't seem to really apply.
559 bucks for a phone is obviously not the definition of cheap, but as far as phones go and with this one bringing advantages really unthinkable in any other in the market, it is a reasonable price.
Also, the phone has killswitches for literally everything that matters, so basically you can carry it around resting safe that your movements are not being tracked, and you turn on when you wish to use it. Basically what Stallman has described as the ideal cellphone.
So even if you can be wary of it for trueanon communication (as of anything), as a phone that you won't use for too sensible stuff but can rely when you have to, it's the best we got (or may get, in this case).

I'm wary after they ran crowdfunding for a laptop that was not significantly more free than anything from a major manufacturer after you've installed install a free OS.
If they actually manage to put out a phone that requires no proprietary software at all I will happily spend $600 on it, however I'm not sure that's possible considering the baseband situation.

Their idea is that the phone stays connected to Matrix via IP, and you only turn on baseband (from a switch that kills it at hard level) when you want to use it.
It's a good solution, pragmatically speaking.

Tell me more about those killswitches, I'm curious of just how good a job they might've done.

33% now!

So I finally ordered the Replicant Note 2 from Tehnoetic. Waiting on it to ship.

FUNDING GOAL REACHED!
Here's hoping they honor their word about a fully free phone hardware stack. Wonder if they'll use GNOME or KDE for the UI and how they'll get the baseband firmware to work.

both GNOME and KDE will dedicate themselves to be supported on the librem 5

Phoronix says the folks at Purism have cracked and disabled the Intel ME firmware for the CPUs on their laptops and are giving an update to the firmware for them.

Give us the date and article. If it's 2 months old, it's not them and not really disabled, just applied proprietary Intel's tool.

I think you are giving them too much credit, they are only applying research other people have recently published. They have detailed blog posts explaining exactly what's going on if you don't understand.

There is some good left in the world. They exceeded their funding goal! https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/

how did they raise 2 million in 4 months? there has to be a big corporation contributing to it, right?
