Linux DEs
Anamika · 2017-07-15 20:50
ITT we discuss our favorite desktop environments on Linux. State the following:
>Your Linux distro
>The default DE that came with your distro when you installed it
>Your preferred and favorite DE you actually use.
Take a screen cap and share with us what it looks like.
Masami Eiri · 2017-07-15 23:24
I like Debian. It has a wide userbase, so if I were to have any trouble, possibly somebody else had it and solved it.
I installed the xfce, and it's my favourite.
Unspecified · 2017-07-16 00:02
I'm more of an Arch/Gnome guy, but since I'm using a macbook air laptop without an ethernet port I had to install something pre-built.
I installed Netrunner (basically Debian) with KDE and after some customization is pretty good.

Excuse me for the earlier lack of screencap but I wasn't on my laptop. I know I haven't done much with it. I like gray colours but now I'm feeling like something darker. Sadly, most darker themes for Cinnamon I've tried are pretty buggy and/or bad looking. That's why I'm thinking about changing my DE.

I use openbox for the sole purpose of being able to watch movies, see pictures and render html5, css3 pages.
other than that %80 of my computing is done on Emacs.
Debian is my goto distro since it is %100 wholly free software system (unless you desire to install some on top of it, which I don't unless a hardware requires non-free firmware)
ForgottenDev · 2017-07-16 18:23
Glad to see some fellow archers. You should try a tiling wm and see if it's for you. I'm currently running Xmonad + Xmobar, but I lost my Xmobar config and that's why everything looks so barebones right now.

I use Debian testing as I both get something that's stable as a rock and that gets the latest software version(with a delay of 10 days).
It doesn't have a default DE.
I prefer to use i3wm. I also have gnome, kde and lxde installed besides it so that I can use some of their default programs.

Gentoo with Compiz (0.8).
Just Compiz. I don't need a desktop environment.
I use Scale to switch windows (top and bottom right edges), and top left corner spawns a new terminal.

I've used Arch for a few years but decided to switch to Debian. The reason is that I'm running my servers on Debian stable and prefer to have superior knowledge of one distro rather than so-so of two distros. I feel that anything that can be done on Arch can also be done on Debian. It took me like few hours to learn how to set my Debian to be as "bleeding edge and minimal" as arch is. The community is also much bigger, so easier to solve problems. + free software for the win, the only proprietary thing that I'm using is Nvidia drivers.
However I still believe that Arch Linux was somehow easier and more desktop-friendly. It was the first (after noobuntu) distro that I installed on my desktop, so maybe my point of view is a little bit queer.

I couldn't find anything that showed their release cycle with any sort of consistency or a list of updates and the dates, and since they seem to only be on Debian 9.1 after a month since the release of Debian 9 on the stable branch, I'm a bit worried how outdated things will become.
I want to switch to Linux because I've now reinstalled Windows 10 about 3 times and it's still corrupted, despite using a different ISO each time. Steam is only officially supported on Ubuntu, but from what I've seen after looking into it is that it barely works on Ubuntu, if it works at all, with it trying to use libraries that make it work like it did on a previous version of Ubuntu. The repository for Steam for Linux is loaded with bugs, and it seems that the most common way to fix it not launching is a work-around that works on most distributions.
Should I go Debian or Manjaro? I want customization, but I also want my games to run, though with the only 'officially supported' release being extremely buggy, is it even worth trying to use only distribution (Or rather, the core) they support when it might work just as well on one they don't?

It's not the drive, I've been on two different ones: One HDD and one SSD.
Out of curiosity, which did you prefer? I want something customizable and stable, but also not months behind schedule with supporting the newest version of WINE. Linux Mint supposedly has had issues with lag lately (Saw that on reddit, but it might be an isolated case), and Ubuntu and Unity is kind of meh from what I've heard.

Enterprises aren't focused on gaming, they're focused on productivity software and enterprise applications. If I need to host a server that handles credit card data for my online business, I don't use SteamOS, a distribution that focuses on easy gaming. Yes, it does have meaning.
Technician · 2017-07-26 20:41
>>2965
if all you care about is gaming on steam, literally only Ubuntu or SteamOS will be usable. Steam's support for linux is hacked together as soykaf and it takes a lot of effort to get it running properly.

Yeah, at this point, I'm just trying to decide what distribution I should go with based on those. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, and Debian doesn't seem bad, except for possibly the release cycle and installer, or I could just go for straight Ubuntu. The problem is that I also want customization.
>>2968
This is exactly what it sounded like when I was looking at Steam: While Ubuntu and SteamOS are the only officially supported platforms, it doesn't really work well on any platform, or at least it works the same.
Also, sorry for de-railing the thread a bit.
Roy Batty · 2017-07-27 02:48
>>2969
What "customization" in particular?
You can switch out the DE on any mainstream distro
You can change themes and icons
Install pretty much any program you want
If you want to avoid systemd, your pool just changes from a blacklist situation to a whitelist, though. Pretty much Gentoo is the only thing even approximating mainstream/well-supported that doesn't use it.
Shogun · 2017-07-27 06:17

Not the guy you were talking to but I figure if he's looking for a distro with some repos(minus systemdildo) he could try vine linux; but getting support in english might be a pain. I figure if he's comfortable looking for something outside the anglosphere he might have some luck, if not compiling from source usually just requires.

Linux always very customizable, linux mint is about 95% the same as ubuntu, which like 90% debian. Being a windows lad you might prefer KDE to other DEs, like i do.
You can install any DE on any flavour of linux, pretty much. Sure unity is soykaf, just go with kubuntu or xubuntu.
Chani · 2017-07-27 18:40
>>2969
Linux is Linux. The difference between distros comes down to different initial configurations and different ways to install and update packages.
Some applications might only be officially supported on 1 or 2 distros but with enough effort there is no reason why you can't get it running on something else.
Like >>2976 said, if a distro doesn't have a package you need you can always compile from source.
So don't worry about customization. What you really want is something mainstream and well supported to you can get help when things don't work. Ubuntu and Mate are good choices in that regard.

Hopefully Steam will support more distributions in the future, though they should probably work on making their Ubuntu version work consistently first.

I will say don't discount arch, but considering you're a beginner with linux anything a stone's throw from Ubuntu's Windows Lite is a step in the right direction. I want to recommend to you that when you feel you're comfortable enough with linux to strip down and remove bloat and leave the bare essentials to run what you need off it. Having a bunch of stuff for no good reason on the system slows down boot time and can suck up memory for no reason whatsoever.

Must be? As long as you have root access you can do what you want.

It's "colorls", a ruby script for displaying icons with their files. I tied the ls aliases to it so it's always invoked. Here's the sauce - https://github.com/athityakumar/colorls

I usually use i3, but I'm currently using evilwm while trying out Source Mage.
It's a very small floating wm, although it accepts a few basic parameters (that you can either pass as arguments to it in ~/.xinitrc or put in ~/.evilwmrc), you need to recompile it for some major reconfiguration if you're not pleased with the defaults.
It's good enough for my needs and I kinda like it.

I run Xubuntu with FVWM as my main driver, and XFCE when I need to do fiddly screen stuff like projecting. Working on making it act like CDE (like pic related, which is not my desktop.) I'm kind of sad to see FVWM not getting more attention, it still gets updated, it's super configurable, and it's got that 90's computer sheen to it, that I know a lot of computer nostalgia freaks, and functionality minded people like.

>Your Linux distro
Fedora. I had FreeBSD installed on this laptop, but decided to switch back to linux due to some problems with drivers and incompatible programs. My initial thought was to create a custom distro with a separate init program and daemon manager, some changes to the FHS and Nix or Guix as package manager, but then I remembered I have better things to do with my time. I've already had my fill of gentoo and figured I just wanted something that worked, so here I am. I think I'll just try to keep my dev environment separated from the rest of the system with a chroot.
(I do loathe systemd, but I also recognize that it does things better than any linux init system out right now.)
>The default DE that came with your distro when you installed it
GNOME, though I had no idea it would be installed with the base system. I think I used it for about 30 minutes before I ripped it out.
>Your preferred and favorite DE you actually use.
I've installed StumpWM, and while I'm highly dubious about its floating mode and tiling practices, I'm surprised by how pleasant to configure it is. I managed to add it to LightDM and I've started building a small DE with it, including some functions I've wanted for a while like a small menu to paste links to play with mpv.
It's not very riced up right now, since I spent most of the time setting up the basic stuff.

I use bspwm as my window manager and basically 90% things I do are done through ranger and qutebrowser. It's magical when you learn to configure them according to your needs. I haven't used a DE since forever, personally preffer to do things in the cli because finger gymnastics, power and the need to constantly learn.

Source Mage requires you to have an intimate knowledge of Linux Gentoo doesn't even require. I feel like you should have at least completed an LFS install once to use it daily.
Roy Batty · 2017-11-20 05:18
I'm basically a person who has no IT experience at all. I like all of these cool looking setups, but am basically incompetent when it comes to using Linux this way because it involves a lot of command line stuff. I always end up doing something stupid as root, then fuarrrking up the entire system and having to do a fresh install. is like kicking dead whales down the beach.
Right now running plain old Debian with Xfce on my laptop. I've got things such that they look like Windows 95, I feel like that makes me feel more productive for actual work.
I used to have Debian with Window Maker (windowmakerlive) on my desktop, but fuarrrked that up somehow. It was really cool though. I'll probably re-install it when I have some free time.
The Oracle · 2017-11-20 13:55
Mint with Cinnamon.
It was my first DE and I really like the simplicity of it, though for daily use I sometimes have a pain with compatibility, for example I cant get the AMD Driver to work on my desktop with it, so I mainly stick to use it on my notebook.
Been thinking of either using a new interface (i3 maybe) or get a new DE, really been looking at Debian and it looks nice, any thoughts? Apparently there's more support for it in form of drivers and other software.

I don't know why but that desktop has some special charm to it. Back then themes were a lot more interesting. I'm bored of this modern flat, metro look we have today. Perhaps it's time to bring back more interesting themes. (Pic related some themes cobbled together and some colors tweaked, still only in draft state as I'm experimenting with creating/modifying GTK themes)
As for distro I use debian testing as it has most packages that I need and is generally trouble free. Mate is my DE of choice as is relatively lightweight and has a traditional style interface.

Recently installed so I have not really done much of anything to it other than make it usable and change the theme. I actually rather like the default wallpaper so I have not bothered to change it yet. I am rather comfortable in most window managers, I just use icewm to avoid the jarring feeling after gaming in XP. I am comfortable with using others just fine otherwise (dwm is great on laptops btw). I chose AntiX because I had success with it on other machines, and I have grown bored/tired of constant feeding of other distros while still avoiding the systemd cancer.

Nvidia proprietary drivers work with no issue for me. My previous card was AMD and I used only free drivers as they worked better. So if you have AMD card don't waste time installing flgrx or what's called now as it's difficult to get them working in my experience. Free AMD drivers also have equal or better performance than proprietary in some cases.

Not very cyb but attractive as hell. Xfce can look great with some modification. Copland window manager is un-obtrusive and beautiful, retrofukation theme goes great with it. Would recommend for less tech-savvy lains.
I still have a WindowMaker desktop on the side as a sort of hobby, but this is what I use for daily work.

Hey guys, could you help me? I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask about it, but I'm a fool and also I've installed Linux (Debian) yesterday. I'm trying to put a wallpaper but I still without succeed.
I wrote the following command:
$ feh --bg-scale /path/to/image.file
and it works. Then to restore the background on the next session, I added the following to the xinitrc file that i created:
$ ~/.fehbg &
I also tried with:
exec --no-startup-id feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/Dark-pattern.jpg
exec feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/Dark-pattern.jpg
eval $(cat ~/.fehbg)
sh ~/.fehbg
What should I do?

Have you tried adding just ~/.fehbg to your .xinitrc? What happens when you run ~/.fehbg in a terminal? Can you show us the content of your ~/.fehbg? Have you tried adding feh --bg-scale /path/to/image.file directly to your .xinitrc? Are you sure your .xinitrc is read when you log in? (It might not be depending on your desktop environment/login manager.)

Add something like x-terminal-emulator to your ~/.xinitrc. It should start your terminal emulator whenever you log in and probably log you out when you close it, depending on your de/wm.
