YouTube archive suggestions

Wintermute · 2017-07-13 02:00
I posted this many months ago in a thread about archiving, but this was before all the boards on this site got nuked, and obviously now that thread is gone. I figured I'd make a thread just for the specific topic I brought up that time, since the notes I took from the thread about archiving are now missing anyway. Basically, I've had many of my favorite videos disappear from YouTube over the years, but now I finally have the means to make my own server, and one of the things I want for that server to do is function as a YouTube archiver so that I don't have to deal with videos going missing anymore. Obviously I'd include my favorites list and my favorite channels in the list of things to archive, but I'm wondering what kinds of channels you guys might suggest that would make for good archiving material?

Vinesauce, the full sauce is occasionally at risk of being taken down but I bet not even you can archive his stuff

Why not make this a permanent feature of what you're doing? I was going to suggest archiving ASMR channels, because I regularly see people complaining about a channel they liked disappearing overnight. I suppose it happens more than most channels because it is intimate/bizarre and their friends or family end up finding out about it and embarrassing them. But I wouldn't know what to archive. Why not have your own thing for archive requests so you could either filter them by popularity, or pick the ones you want to archive?

definitely archive all CrashCourse videos, all KaptainKristian videos, and all nerdwriter1 videos. probably also the kurzesagt (in a nutshell) videos

make a javascript addon that would send a video link to the server once the server has the video link just mirror it on a private yt channel of your own and unlist the video

wouldnt it be easier to just download the videos?

backup some of those minecraft vids so historians can see where it all went wrong. But seriously if yt dissapeared tomorrow repair vids and mix tapes would be at a premium.

>>2636 >ThuleanPerspective >Terry Davis You should also considering uploading everything on a decentralized network, like IPFS.

>>2674 It's what I do. Works perfectly, and helps me organize what to watch, when to watch, and mostly actually finish watching the videos when I have to pause midway. Just open them in Smplayer, and playback resumes exactly where I stopped.

>>2636 I go through playlists and find videos that are missing. Not even sure what they are which is so annoying.

I've got a lot of university courses (mostly in maths and tech) that I've scraped off youtube in the last year or so. So I would recommend searching for lectures on topics that interest you. If you restrict the search to long videos and playlists, you can cut through the crap and find good conferences/talks/lectures on a bunch of stuff. And as >>2691 says, you're more likely to commit to absorbing an hour-long video in the comfort of your local media player than over youtube. >>2682 My videos already are on IPFS

Primitive technologies, I think is the name of the channel where the guy builds his own kilns, housing, etc. out of nothing but what you'd find outside - no advanced tools, no "just one multitool" bear-grylls-tier bullsoykaf, just dirt, grass, sticks, dirt, and water. Also skunkpaste

I want a lain instance of peertube. :( I'm crying overnight for that.

OP here, thanks for the recommendations. While the suggestions have been good so far, I was also looking for channels worth archiving for "historical significance". The first reply to this thread is a good example, since Vinesauce has over the last few years grown to be very important in the streaming scene, but what are some others (gaming or otherwise)? Maybe there's some news channel I'm not aware of whose content is worthy of archiving?

When a youtuber fuarrrks up and says something controversial you should archive it because chances are they will take down the video if it causes a soykafstorm. As for youtubers who are likely to do this basically "lolcows" and people who are known to have strong opinions. Totalbiscuit would be a prime target if he didn't limit most of his antics to twitter but I'm sure you can think of a few others (eg Onision)

>>2923 I knew I'd get some cunty response like this. There's a lot of e-sheep out there putting blind faith in these "youtube personalities" that are all based around lies and manipulation. >inb4 someone claims I'm talking about every youtuber ever lol no. You're browsing an obscure imageboard yet you're still high horsed enough to judge others on how they spend their time? Give me a break jabroni.
The Plague · 2017-07-26 17:46
Do you realize how large a server you'd need to host thousands of videos? Just keep to your own content, OP.
The Phantom Phreak · 2017-07-26 19:24
>>2945 We come here for interesting discussion and the occasional laugh. Cataloguing every idiot on the internet just in case they remove it later? The other idiots in these cults of personality are probably beyond help anyway. You are following the cults just as intently but think you're above it somehow. That's even worse.

>>2951 OP here, I actually did a test just now to answer your question. I used the Yesdev video about marketing as my test video since it's a bit over 10 minutes long (my guess for how long the average YouTube video is, or at least the average one that I'd archive) and happened to be in my recommendations right now. I download most of my videos in 720p, and went with that resolution here as well. The file came out to be 138 MB, which amounts to about seven videos per 1 GB of storage. So 7,000 videos if I had 1 TB of storage to play with, which is not that unmanageable.

>>2670 popular edutainment channels would be good to grab in general. lol, I wonder what youtubes response would be if someone were to mirror a youtube red series like mind field. how much quicker would the archiving project be served a dmca

>>2913 >twitter how about a p2p archive.is type website?
