Fedora?

What does /tech/ think about fedora? All programmers around me use fedora, but i can't trust their opinion. I need just a distro for comfortable haskell and python development.

I use it as a daily driver and find it comfortable and quick. It also improves my laptop battery life more so than ubuntu did, out of the box.
I like the plain gnome interface and simple layout of the system that is conducive to organization and quick access. Be warned though, I generally like to work from command line and text editor only, so I tend to have little preference between distributions beyond aesthetics and default settings lol.
I appreciate the free software friendly default setup of fedora and I like the FOSS philosophy though I am a somewhat weak adherent. Fedora has been reliable, and its security features are easy to use in my time with it. I have no complaints, but ultimately its your choice.

Oh! I almost forgot, I do python, LISP, C++ and java development with my system. My daily activities consist of managing PyLint databases and debugging legal matter management software. I also enjoy writing neuronal simulations and robot control systems software in my spare time.
Occasional Racket or Haskell use are a thing too.

Fedora is as easy as it gets for development, at least i've never had any problem using rust/node/C.
Never broke the system either. RPMfusion takes care of most of my needs.

I used fedora for over a year as my daily driver. Very pleasant. Up-to-date, easy to administer, no major problems at all. I switched to Arch only because I wanted to try setting up my own desktop environment. Fedora makes a fine development environment.

But in every distro you can setup your own DE, isn't it?

I don't understand why anyone would choose Fedora, what's special about it? What makes it in any way different than anything else? I run Gentoo because it is built in a way almost no other distro is and has features that no other distro has. What features does Fedora have over anything else? How is it any better than say Debian? And don't say "wayland by default", defaults don't matter you can install whatever you want anyway.

I'm thinking of switching from Mint to Fedora because it's easier on the battery life but I know basically nothing about it. How hard is the change and can I still do my normal stuff (python, c++, uni stuff and animu and mango reading)

The fact that you don't have to tweak defaults for three days to have experience you are looking for?

From my experience, if you want something easy on battery life, then you want Windows. I have yet to see distribution with DE that didn't eat through battery like crazy. And I think you will be fine.

Should I mention that NixOS is the best distro for that? If you ever need to develop for different versions of libraries/compilers nix + nix-shell are FTW.
You can of course install nix onto Fedora if you are okay with duplicating most of your packages between rpm and nix.

I couldn't get the 24 or 25 releases to run on my Thinkpad x200. No thanks.

I use debian stretch on my libre x200. It works very nicely.
I also have stretch on my desktop and server. It works very well for running VMs with PCI passthrough on my desktop and server.

What distribution and what hardware did you try? Did you use powertop? I get almost 16 hours of battery life on my laptop ans I can't imagine windows doing much better.

Not him but what distro and DE?
