https://www.wired.com/2015/04/dmca-ownership-john-deere/ What are Lain's thoughts on the upcoming cyberpunk dystopia and the complete alienation of almost all people from private ownership? More specifically thoughts on how corporations are using restrictions on computer software to make restrictions on physical property.

This kind of thing has been going on for a while now, this is just the final nail in the coffin, all this will do is create a black market for exploits of the sort.

More specifically thoughts on how corporations are using restrictions on computer software to make restrictions on physical property. It is like kicking dead whales down the beach? Yeah its strange all those William Gibson nobles seem like they were written today... As the rich get richer, resources are depleted and traditional labor becomes automated, coercion becomes more necessary... Either in the form of more sophisticated policing and prison structures, the surveillance state, or harsh internet controls and the strict enforcement of intellectual property laws... The megacoms will destroy all obstacles to their profit. Meanwhile all the "visionary" billionaires are day dreaming about self driving cars, humane meat and space tourism... And somehow this will be carbon neutral... Its convenient the preach this techno utopia while we descend into cyber dystopia.

I think this is a political issue rather than a tech one. This situation is to be expected in a fascist society.

>>342 Right but politics economics and technology all come together... People worry about neo Nazis but google, at&t, GE etc. Are the ones who would make the totalitarian cyber dystopia a reality.... Fascism always serves the ruling class.

>>335 I hope you Burgers enjoy the fruits of massive overregulation leading to entry barriers and dystopian monopolies. You'll probably blame it on Capitalism, too.

>>335 >whether John Deere’s twisted vision of ownership will become a reality. lmao just don't fuarrrklNG buy from them? Seems simple

I know a guy who's working on cracking their soykaf for a competitor. It's kind of neat.

>>354 You clearly don't understand how rural communities are laid out. You need hardware with a dealer relatively nearby for when it's repair time. JD may be the only local option. >>355 There was an anonymous farmer interviewed on the CBC who said he found h4x for the software but of course was vague as to how and where.

>>354 Got caught by the word filter there newfriend? Anyway the point of the article isn't that John Deere is the only one doing this. The point is that this is the future. Have you been watching news regarding cars? I think it was Chevy that is putting forward a ride sharing program that where instead of owning a car you call Chevy and they send a self driving car to you. It's becoming economically viable to force consumers to be renters instead of owners in so many markets.

>>342 there's a distinction between totalitarian and fascist. fascism isn't "totalitarian but even worse", it's a special form. our society isn't fascist. fascism implies the state exists for the purpose of war, which gives its people meaning. war is not part of our life as it was for Germany in ww2. and there's usually an important racial-spiritual component, both of which are long dead in american society at least
Mario Rossi · 2017-04-25 18:14
>>363 I'd disagree The u.s runs on war, we've been in a state of continuous war in multiple countries for 15yeats with no end in sight... With fascism its debatable whether racial purity is essential to it, Mussolini said something like "there's no such thing as a pure race" so fascism sometimes is more of a pan ethnic nationalism... Anyway race based nationalism is actually on the rise in the u.s. obviously there's white nationalism, but the republicans have been using racist dogwhistles since the 60s.

>>354 Open-source farming equipment sadly isn't available yet, leading farmers to make decisions that harm themselves. http://opensourceecology.org/gvcs/ http://opensourceecology.org/gvcs/gvcs-machine-index/ There are people working against capitalism, towards open source equipment, but it's difficult to do in today's society.

>>363 Bro, at least here in Italy, where fascism has born, fascism was and is not about war that much, it is/was a simple authoritarian politics that took power over everyone. Yes we took our place in the WW2 but it was for simple colonialism (something that has nothing to do with totalitarianism) and being allied with Hitler
Special Agent Bob · 2017-04-25 21:29
>>365 I'd disagree (sorry for the double post) I am the Italian guy. Fascism's actually born without racial implications but that lasted for a limited amount of time, Mussolini said there is not such thing as racial purity and then said that we are racially pure Italians and then racially pure Caucasian and then that Jews were not pure and then and then. Dvx said a lot of contradictory things
Special Agent Bob · 2017-04-26 06:51

>>390 Yeah you're right and im sure you know more about this topic than me t>>390 I don't think wars of conquest are central to fascism, if you look at Pinochet or Franco I don't think either of them invaded anyone... But I definitely think militarism is an essential aspect.
Lady 3Jane.. · 2017-04-26 20:02
>>393 Yeah I'm not saying that racism historically isn't a major aspect of fascism but it seems fluid... Like. Not all fascists are explicitly anti semetic... But yeah Mussolini he embraced many aspects if Nazism later on... My point is that racial purism just not always the central aspects or their definition of racial purity is very fluid.... Like historically Nazis considered Slavs and other eastern European peoples racially inferior but today there is a big neo Nazi movement in eastern Europe.
Cat Mother · 2017-04-26 20:04
> thread starts with link about DMCA and farm hardware > hay guise letz talk about FASCISM again xD

>>433 well there its debatable whether the reign of megacorps constitutes fascism or not.... I'd say it does but a different form than 30s fascism.
Pulse · 2017-04-27 22:13
>>433 I don't really care what it's called (but I don't think it should be called fascism). I don't want to live in a world where our legislators will bend over backwards to protect proprietary software and It's come to a point where it's not just affecting nerds like us but people in all sorts of industries including farming.
The Plague · 2017-04-27 22:53
>>504 Legislators have always bent over for cash, this is nothing new and it being applied to software is the least problematic instance of this.
