Sway WM.

>TFW i3wm will never support Wayland due to being too dependent on X, and requiring a complete rewrite for Wayland support. However there is sway WM: https://github.com/SirCmpwn/sway It aims to be a drop in replacement for i3wm but with wayland support and some of it's own goodies. Has anyone of you ever tried Sway? I'm just asking before I attempt the plunge into it.

I tried to migrate to it a few times but it feels clunky thanks to the fuarrrk up that wlc is. Will try it again once they have their own compositor which apparently is 0.13.

i wonder how long until i can fully use it as a replacement

>>201 I've never used Wayland as I found it confusing as hell to install it on a computer already running X and getting it to be a choice as a session like with Fedora. I would love to see Afterstep or Windowmaker support Wayland.

>using X >not one framebuffer with tmux/links2/mplayer Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!

>>201 Alternatives are always great and I'm looking forward to Wayland, but what's the issue with X? Besides stability problems (which have gone away when switching to free drivers) I don't see many issues. Especially with i3wm. That WM is insanely fast, clean and stable. Again, besides instability (in some cases) and legacy code I don't see much of a problem with X.

>>345 I haven't really investigated X vs Wayland... However, Apparently wayland is a lot more 'fluid' as in there's a lot less screen tearing. Also X was invented in 1987, that would not have been a problem if they had cut out old crud from time to time. But they did not, they kept everything in the name of backwards compatibility. Which usually still doesn't work on modern Linux distros because other dependencies are broken. Wayland does away with all of that. In fact wayland is pretty minimal. Which on the other hand could be boring as many funny window decorations like cats walking on your windows were more easily implemented in X as X generally did more things than Wayland did. Since lainchan can't handle longer posts, I decided to embed mine in this image. Use steghide to reveal the hidden file. The passphrase is 'sway'.

I tried to use sway twice. The first time I gave up because I didn't manage to set up Xwayland. The second time I did manage to set up Xwayland but only to realize that sway didn't support setting screens in portrait mode. Also I have mixed feelings about running Xwayland, but not doing so would imply finding a replacement for urxvt. And switching to wayland would also mean giving up on ssh -x and x2x, which I use surprisingly quite often. And then I'd also have to port my crurent keymap to whatever format wayland uses. And I don't think any xcape replacement exists yet either. I juste realized that I'll probably never willingly switch to Wayland. I spent too much time building my current environment.

>>361 the passphrase did not work for me.
Cereal Killer · 2017-04-25 21:38
>>372 You must be using an old version of steghide or missed the file being written. The contents don't get printed. For the passphrase, remove quotes and such obviously. I even started another machine after powering everything with a keyboard attached down and crawling to bed to check if I uploaded the wrong file. It still works. I wasn't exactly looking to provide support for this utility. Well, the post is mostly detailing some issues I've had with Sway. It's not very important. I even spotted a typo just now...

Can I use both i3wm and sway on a system? I heard that you have to use a custom patch to use dmenu with sway, and that custom aptch might break dmenu when using on i3wm.
Dozer · 2017-04-27 16:01
>>488 It should be possible. Just install dmenu twice and use a shell script to chose which version should be launched.

I've been using sway for a couple of weeks now. It is totally usable but not as mature as i3. If you don't mind spending some extra time configuring it, go ahead. The main problem I've found is some xwayland apps won't share the same clipboard as sway, which can be kind of annoying but it depends in how you work and if your workflow can be adapted. This problem comes from wlc, not from sway itself I think.
