REPURPOSED TECH THREAD
kuritre · 2023-02-09 09:17
hi fellow cyb enterpreneurs, figured it would help some people as well as me so why not making a repurpose old or abandoned tech thread? i would make it like this:
>post stuff you don't know what to do with, it could also be used stuff you found around (example: old android), hell even an old lawn mower, i'm sure you can repurpose it to be a fuarrrking weapon
>get advice and see if someone knows how to repurpose it (ex: install x ROM)
>do it
>extra points if you post a result, a photo can be good as well (example: show how you can now hack the NSA with your cool 2005 repurposed nokia)
i would like to integrate this with >>2816 (salvage thread), so someone finds cool tech with the advice on there, and then gets here and gets some re-purpose advice. hope it's a cool thread.
HACK THE PLANET AND LET'S ALL LOVE LAIN!!!!!

i'll start with my stuff to give an example, recently i found an old PSP with a good battery life and a nokia C6-00 (pic related). what should i do with those? I also found an old ADSL modem, maybe i can install some OS router but i would not know if it's a good idea to use it at all

>recently i found an old PSP
get one o' them cheapo memory stick to sd card adapters and softmod it. i put retroarch on mine a while back and it was really easy to do, just drag n derrp some files to the sd card, couple o' clicks on the psp and boom just like that.
>also found an old ADSL modem
openwrt has many supported devices but i don't know if it supports yours, it won't hurt to look https://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_fwdownload

i tend to keep an eye out for e-waste when i'm out and about. i've disassembled some nice tech for hardware, I have a decent collection of various components.
i keep an eye out for timer chips cause I wanna build some oscillating synths and what have you.
i've used scavenged LEDs to replace the clipping section in one of my old pedals and it sounds sicckkkkk.

thanks lain, will flash the psp once i get the new battery, the old one was expanding lol
no modem support sadly

i always wanted to do this as well but never learned how, got any tips or resources?

i have an old android phone with a cracked screen, i'm trying to sell it right now but it goes so low aftermarket prices i'm thinking of replacing the screen/battery and using it for fuarrrking around in android or at the very least just using it as another rewards program farmer phone.
besides that, i have an older ipod i was going to repair but some prices for parts have gotten silly for what they are, so i'm waiting a bit.
>>9910
i wish i could start a service for like sending out parted electronics to people like you! i feel bad sending my soykaf to scrap yards when i know they could be in better hands.

the expanded battery is a snack pack, eat it.

I have a battery powered handheld TV with an analogue receiver that has no use right now. It is functional but there are no major analogue broadcasts here anymore.

i have 3 tv box that have a rockchip rk3128, 1gb ram and 8gb rom. thinking about repurpose it as a low power linux box but i can't for the life find UART traces on 3 of them for debugging. the only thing i haven't tried is microsd to uart but i doubt they multiplex it. no JTAG traces as well.
Koos van der Merwe · 2023-03-09 08:33
scavenged an echo dot v2 from the curb recently. its on the shelf next to the firecube, which ive only kept in the hopes of doing that FireFU hack. never got around to it tho, and i expect the exploit has been patched by now.
and of course the 3-4 headless laptops

I wish it were possible to extend useful lifespan of old Android phones. I recently thought it would be a good idea to convert an old 4.0.4 handy into offline PDA. But where do even get old versions of apps? I tried side-loading latest Organic Maps tiles into old version of MapsWithMe, and it failed miserably. A maps app is supposed to work indefinitely with only changing part being map files, right? You aren't necessarily supposed to update an image viewer to view freshest JPEGs created in 2023, why a map application? Basically I can only listen to music on this thing and play Angry Birds or whatever games were there in 2012, it's not even an "audiophile-grade" hardware like LG G6/V20 from 2016 to be worth preserving.

You could keep using them for decades if you could load your own code on there instead of having android in the middle.
Old phones still have good SOCs if you don't need a gui. Multiple cores and more than 100MB of ram and a bunch of relatively fast IO (modems too) for cheap is great. But they are completely locked down and you can't get datasheets so they are ewaste. It's a real shame.

Simple Mobile Tools has a couple offline apps that look and work well.

Though I recommend perusing F-Droid if you want to find something more open source in terms of apps.

Any Lainons got any ideas for an old xbox 360 and wii? Also have some free cheapy old phones, brand is zte(pic related not the same model) which is from a government program not sure which type of android version
Figured on not paying for overpriced "retro"games and potentially dealing with disc errors since the xbox 360 cant read for soykaf and the disk drive jams near constantly. the wii has problems connecting to the internet not sure y and has the same "retro" prices.
heard someone was able run website/chan off of a wii.
any useful parts i can get out these things if nothing works out?

I don't know soykaf about tech but a friend of mine has an xbox that's "chipped" so it can play games on a usb. As long as you don't push it too far it can play most anything.
I'm also interested in knowing how to repurpose old android phones. I have a few and only use one as an N64 and GBA emulator

though the wii as a server is dog soykaf, there is a reason wiichan is dead. poor thing basically ddos'd itself trying to handle any sort of load lol
it is good for retro emulation, and you can still connect it to a crt tv if you are autistic like that

Does LGA775 pc repurposed and partially upgraded count? I added an SSD and replaced a GPU with radeon r7 240. I mostly use it as a retroarch machine.

Is there any neat, niche stuff you can do with a phone modem? I found one for $5 which you stick into a computer, has a LINE and PHONE port. I might pick up a phone as well to use with it, I saw one in a thrift shop somewhere.

There's usually an automatic frequency scaling built into hardware and managed by OS. Look into Setup Menu settings under "processor".

I have an old Nokia symbian phone, any ideas? Looking mostly for offline usage since it's old and inssecure as fuarrrk. I thought about using it for notes since it has a physical QWERTY keyboard but I haven't been able to find a decent text editor for it (vim would work just fine but I wasn't able to find a port).

I think that Android phones are very easy to get use of since you can always just install termux, plug an external physical KB and just use CLI apps as you would on a regular GNU/Linux distro. Of course you should keep it offline because security, but there's a lot of things that you can run on it.

I have an old macbook running miniDLNA as a media server using an old modem to connect my ps3 and PC to it, the modem has a sort of kill switch for WiFI so the only things that can connect to it are what i plug into it (as far as i know anyway, upnp is supposed to be dodgy but i kind of dont care)
the mac was given me for school years ago and until this setup its pretty much just sat in a cupboard for years.
I also have a box full of old phones, most with broken screens. Is there anything i can do with them or are they useless at this point?
im poor as fuarrrk so im pretty comfy in scrap and soykaf tech but i recently got my hands on a ps4 so im going to try messing around with putting linux on it

I am thinking about buying the most modern and recent version of the Xbox 360, but I don't know if I would be able to jailbreak it, someone know a good program that does that for me? It would be great if it comes with a lot of good stuff, like free games, software and so on.

What is that thing in the metal mint tin?
Also you should sand down that whole on the left unless you want the cable ripping or tearing like a ripped condom like most of the bi-products that post on here (lainchan users).
I can't tell if its a singleboard computer or some PCI WiFi module like some kind DIY external Wifi adapter? If so thats based and would like to know how you made it.

I have a lot of computer parts that are waaaay outdated (old soundcards, ancient MOBOs, network cards, WINTV soykaf) is it worth trying to learn to scrap the gold? Can I Frankenstein a machine? What's the ideas
Drifter · 2024-11-05 22:49
>>12131
This one is for intermediate electronics tinkerers
If the mobos are modern enough they'll have a ridiculous "8+2" or something VRM configuration. Old ones have like 4 or 6 phases, still works but you get less obv. That's all the switching regulators around the CPU socket.
I have in the past harvested them for small-run PCB prototypes. You can easily save 6 bucks/board (which adds up on a 10 board run) by reusing the inductors and perhaps even regulators. Requirements: you need excellent SMD soldering skills (or patience for learning), a way to measure the inductor characteristics (TC1 cheap Chinese component tester has sufficed so far) and a basic understanding of switching regulators.
creating the footprints can be a bitch though, no datasheet and so on. And Isat is unknown, you can guess based on their used voltage regulator but still. 60 bucks per run

Thats not even worth it to time and toxic process with chemicals
You would be better of seeing if you can ME clean or libreboot/coreboot the boards or both and sell them online.
>>network cards,
same here I would like to know if there is some kind of adapter for PCI or PCIe so I can make my own network adapter like in the pic it appears to be just that but I'm not sure if its just some SBC board?

There are a bazillion good Java games out there you can play on old smart and not-so-smart phones.

hey lain, i got an old android phone. i wanna put a custom rom on it, put some sort of LAN or direct-radio (wifi/bluetooth) accessible website/messageboard/fileserver onto it, and i want to bring it to parties or to friends' places. encourage that sweet sweet friend-to-friend sneakernet-esque computerism we've all been craving, dontchaknowit
ideally i'd want this to be like, easy to for people with basic computer literacy to replicate
any advice/help is appreciated :)
i'll keep you folks posted about how things go

alright, i've set up an os and f-droid on this phone. put tor on. on a public wifi now. posting from the phone. now to put other goodies onto it. termux maybe? i saw that termux comes with apt repo access. could be good
for once i feel free to mess up because this is literally an old phone that would otherwise be unused and if i mess up i can just factory reset and start over

hey lain,
sorry this is a dead board. you'll see lots of threads like these over the years and their lifespan is literally around 1-3 years. you're better off talking to a mirror than talking in this thread

I had a similar idea, but I wanted to use old android phones and tablets as external screens.
Since its almost impossible to find display drivers, I thought of writing a small app that listens to video data on either the display-port (through usb-c) or maybe across a network socket.
Skimmed through the android API and dev docs but so far I am not quite sure how to do this

Nice idea, but is a headache with little pay off.
Everything is custom, proprietary, and undocumented so it's up to you to reverse engineer it as well as develop it.
If there are some internal documentation leaks it would significantly change the hackspace but it's easier/cheaper to buy off the shelf parts and make your own now.
t. someone who did android ROM cooking with enabled wifi years ago.
