Creating own distributed FS

Debbie Charteris · 2022-12-11 13:27
I was thinking of hosting a Openstack distributed FS using public university WiFi's all locations scoutet have gigabit or more but I don't know where to hide the thin clients I plan on using. I have access to a few rooms where lectures are held and being on premise won't be suspicious for me. Anybody got experience for this ?

You probably shouldn't do this. You'll easily be found out, through several means. They WILL eventually think that something is up, and they will be able to see which devices were connecting to it and pinpoint you based on information such as your timetable, when you were in the university etc. Seen as you already have the hardware, just set up a storage device cluster at where you're living and configure it to be accessed remotely. Other people would still be able to access it, and you wouldn't risk being kicked out of your course.

What's the use case? If it isn't illegal you can also use IPFS on your own and other peoples computers. Doing what you are planning to do is, as >>9633 already said, risky since they will see the date when those devices first connected to the network and on which AP, then they will likely go through camera footage and see you planting the thin clients. Or it could all go according to plan, who knows, sometimes things are just that easy.
