i want to place mirrors so that i can see the back of my head and be able to cut my own hair and abandon the barber does anyone of you cut his own hair?any sources to help with that matter
Haruyoshi · 2022-07-01 13:52
>>8923 I shave my head now, if you get gud with a straight razor you can use a smart phone and a mirror. This isnt rocket science.I do used to have a mullet or mowhawk that I would keep
Zhora · 2022-07-01 17:01
>>8923 Just use your hand. Shave (preferably with electrical assistance) until your scalp is uniformly smooth. That's what I do, and I always get asked if I went to a barber shop. I take it that I shave my head well enough for people to think it was done by a professional. Shaving my head myself is the best decision I made in the last few years. It's cheap, easy and low maintenance, although I sometimes miss my shoulder-length hair. Chicks dig long hair. I hope You don't mind people mistaking you for a skinhead, most don't know about S.H.A.R.Ps, so keep that in mind.

lol that self-cut system looks stupid, I bet it's expensive for no reason too If anyone is thinking about that just go to a Sally beauty supply instead, the nice ladies there can direct you to the superior extending accordion wall-mount that your grandma used for her back mirror the whole time before this "system" was made
Cereal Killer · 2022-07-01 17:59
I just cut it, don't care too much for perfection or barberic fashions a camera system might be easier to setup than a mirror rig depending what sorts of stuff you have lieing about if you want that, but you don't need it or get your wife to do it
Masami Eiri · 2022-07-01 18:06
I havnt cut my hair in ages but Im good at it when I do. I dont need a mirror for most of it. I just place my hand in position and grade that way.
Tyrell Wellick · 2022-07-01 23:53
>>8923 I take off the mirror doors of my closet and but it behind me so I can see. I had a long middle part hairstyle for a while and just followed salon guy's videos. For shorter hair, I just shave with size 8 guard and then leave 1-2 inches on top. For anything else i'd look at The Salon Guy on yt, has good videos on cutting hair.

>>8923 I use a cheap mirror like picrel in the hand that isn't holding the clippers, in addition to my normal wall mounted mirror It's a perfectly ordinary haircut if you just clip everything to one size and then clean up the edges (ears neck sideburns), scissors are not necessary
Tank · 2022-08-04 20:40
>>8923 I cut my own hair with clippers and the mirrors on a beauty cabinet. I have shaky hands, and cannot use a handheld mirror. >>8926 I'd avoid overpriced gimmicks and pick up a mirror from the thrift store and attach to my wall if I didn't have the cabinet. Cleaning up the base of the neck is a challenge for me, so if you have a friend to help that's a plus. Not insurmountable. Honestly, I just use the ears guard these days, but I have no duty to look good. My Wahl pamphlet has no more information than their site, and has given me ok results. What I'm really happy about is the effect on my budget. https://wahlusa.com/how-to/haircutting/mens-haircuts

>>8923 Use a small hand mirror in front of you with a larger mirror behind you when cutting the back. Face the big mirror when cutting the front, obviously. First time cutting, only cut it a little and ask someone to rate your "new barber". Get a cutter with a ceramic blade if possible, it will never dull. A portable one you can unplug and use is a joy to use without any dangling cable, but not essential. All hair clippers (even portables) run faster when mains powered - which gives the best cut quality. Comb hair before cutting. The hair attachments will be your biggest gripe. They can often fall off or break. Broken ones can be hard to replace because no one sells them for old models, but there are models you can 3D print. Basically, develop a reflex to check the attachment is secure before you start cutting. You'll save yourself problems. It is great to be able to cut your hair on demand. I don't know why barbers exist any more. It's like going to a shop to have your finger nails cut. I can do it with eyes shut now but it takes years of experience for it to become second nature and to 'see' by the feeling alone. t. barber free 10+years P.S. It's a skill you'll always be REALLY GLAD you have!

The back of your head is easy to cut for most styles. You just go against the grain of your hair in the back. You pretty much do this over and over and draw lines from the back of your head to the front where the widows peak would be. Then you look in the mirror and fix up little problems. Takes like 15 minutes.

>>9092 >Cleaning up the base of the neck is a challenge for me, so if you have a friend to help that's a plus. Not insurmountable. Honestly, I just use the ears guard these days, but I have no duty to look good. You simply lift up the heavy hair from your head so it's away from your neck and shave the fuzz off your neck with a razor.

>>9093 barber here are really cheap around 2-3$ for a cut. Really give a good haircut + Trim. Still I wanna learn how to cut my own hair.
Joe Bloggs · 2022-10-21 05:01
My genetics only allow hair to grow to about mid-neck length, then it stops growing and just curls awkwardly. I hated that when I was a kid, since metal hair was my ideal. When I was about 17, I bought a $20 electric shaver and, after botching a mullet, just shaved the whole head. One of the best decisions in my life, honestly. My hair used to be greasy all the time, now it's far easier to scrub.
Jane Doe · 2022-10-22 05:39
As people in this thread have said, it's pretty simple stuff. Only new advice I can give it go over the same spot several times, ever after it _feels_ smooth.

Professional barber Elliot Forbes cuts his own hair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39mhx5W43T0 Here a non barber guy cuts his own hair too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwmLNSkpPxk You probably don't need to the mirror system, but there are other home haircut systems like the flowbee. It's totally up to you with which products you want to spend your money on.

>>8927 >get your wife to do it I have been begging my girlfriend to cut my hair since 2019. She still hasn't and I refuse to pay $30 + mandatory tip to someone who's just going to fuarrrk it up or not understand what style I would even want if I tried to do something effay with it. I guess I'm just going to look like a hermit wizard for the rest of my life. It tickles my ass crack in the shower to give reference for the length.

>>8923 i have a bathroom cabinet with mirror doors. just open both of them and it does the trick

I've been cutting my hair for 10+ years. - im using a philips trimmer trimmer with 3 addons (?), and electronic adjustment, allowing you to go from 0.5mm (without addon) to 4 cm, in 1 or 2 mm steps - in practice you only use a few 'lengths', maybe 3 or 4. - for longer hair, instead of using the 4cm, its better to set the clipper to say 2cm, and then hold your hair between your fingers and run the clippers over your fingers. - constantly shake cut hair out of the clippers - easiest at first is to comb your hair. Then run a 16mm on the sides and back (bottom to top), then do the same but about halfway up with a 12mm. then try a 7 even lower etc. - most haircuts actually have the back a lil longer, so you might want to do a lopsided circle - if you work systematically like the above, you can hardly see any imperfections. - lines /edges are easiest to do with bare clippers on an angle or upside down (downwards).

My hair is starting to recede, how long do I have before I might as well start trimming my own hair? I've kept really long hair for over 20 years now.

>>9879 Ignore hairline and continue rocking. If you're two decades into it, what do you honestly have to lose at this point?
Arisu Mizuki · 2023-02-06 09:06
If all you're trying to do is shave your head, you don't really need a mirror. Just keep going over it until you stop hearing the sound of hair being clipped. Your sense of touch helps too. Never be over-reliant on your sense of vision, not on the battlefield nor in the barbershop.
BloodCat · 2023-07-07 21:50
For anyone who needs it: just place any floor standing mirror behind you at a 45 degree angle of the front mirror, move to both sides and don't over cut. Better to cut less and fix if needed than to cut more, there's no Ctrl+Z for hair.
Gyula Kovacs · 2024-06-22 19:04
>>8923 Been cutting my hair for a decade or so off and on, you'll mess up a few times but get a hang of it and then never have to go back to the barber.
Judge Fang · 2024-06-26 20:59
I switched to asking my dad to do it. I think it's a lot easier to have someone else cut it, just ergonomics and vision and all wise. If you live with someone, I'd kinda suggest that.
Agent Richard Gill · 2024-06-26 21:19
Been shaving my own head for the last 24 years. I don't use a guard of any kind on my clippers (number 0 and my clippers are 0.8mm, had a set of Wahls that was 0.4mm but they were lethal). I shave my head and face at the same time. Once you've got the hang of it you can do it in a few minutes. Just a matter of making sure you have the clippers angled right when you're shaving the bits you can't see. You can feel if you've missed spots when you run your hand over your head.
Nell · 2024-06-30 13:57
I've cut my own hair a handful of times now. The first few times I kinda fuarrrked it up and had to get someone to fix it. But the latest time I did pretty good. I just use a handheld mirror to check the back. So much better than going to barber

I solo cut my hair first time this year. Im a guy, it was (half a year)+ long. I had done it in bathroom with the help of bathroom mirror and camera on my laptop. It was 2-3 hours of fun cutting with dull ass paper scissors. I was trying to achieve one length medium cut. As long as it was slicked back it looked okayish, except the parts around the ears, there were noticeable spots missed with longer hair. When the hair was in it's natural form it looked like a head of 13 y.o girl that went through her first mental breakdown as the hairstyle of a 13-year-old girl after her first mental throw, who decided to vent her frustrations on her appearance. Anyway it's one of those experiences I recc to do at least once in your life. If you want to rock a longer hair I would suggest letting it grow to nipples and cutting it all vertically with scissors just like women in movies do when changing their appearance because fbi is after them. For the shorter hair rethink the assistance of buzzer, you can grow out your crown but the sides and back are very hard to solo trim with scissors.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2024-07-21 10:48
>>11820 > do at least once in your life. What an expired mentality. Things take practice. If you think cutting your hair is cool, then commit to doing it regularly. Invest in the time and proper tools that you need. A pair of hairdresser's scissors isn't even expensive or hard to find, and every tutorial on invidious will tell you it's required. > I would suggest What right do you have to suggest anything? Go out into the world and become good at something, then I'd enjoy reading your post.

darn you guys and your weirdass eyedeas about cellphones and laptops, have you never heard of a mirror ? they're cheap and low latency, high bandwidth and well tested. I think I let someone else cut my hair once about 2016 but that was the last time.
