Lain Commune Thread #4
Mario Rossi · 2022-05-02 21:05
Previous thread >>2953 soon to be bumped off. I think what we should do is quickly figure out a broad location where we'll be doing it, and then literally just find some abandoned site and start it there. If we get kicked out, we pack up and leave. We should organize the physical space with transportation in mind. At some point, we'll hit on a spot that that we'll have squatted long enough for adverse possession to kick in. From there, we can start to integrate with the local nature, establish a base of operations from which we might grow by showing other locals how they can collaborate well with us, how they can start their own sustainable communes with whom we might establish mutual relationships, and keeping our eye out for people who might be interested in joining us.
I think one of the flaws of previous threads is too much prethinking. The issue with that is, besides general principles, the organization of the commune will be a hyperlocal exercise, depending heavily on the particular situation we find ourselves in. That is to say, before we touch grass on site, there's not much to be done besides ideological bickering or thought experiments. The only thing we need to start is to have is a respect for each other and an insistence that we only do what is OK with everyone. Exceptions to that may exist, such as someone being unreasonable or hostile, but such cases must be addressed carefully, especially as the commune ages or grows.
Pic unrelated.

>The only thing we need to start is to have is a respect for each other and an insistence that we only do what is OK with everyone.
You're right but this would be the hardest step in my opinion. Being civil and showing the most basic form of respect isn't exactly the first thought in a lot of our minds. A lot of us can do with breaking out of the habit of assuming that everyone is an extreme form of their own beliefs and recognizing eachother as people capable of growing and progression. Not all of us are like this but this idea isn't just excusive to Lainchan either.
Apoc · 2022-05-03 00:51
I honestly think you just need to do it, if you actually want it to happen. Screw only doing what is OK with everyone, only associate with people who are ok with what you're doing. You don't need to make it open to every single person on lainchan. If you don't have the money or energy to make it happen then quit talking and move on. Otherwise:

Are these people allowed to have input and criticism to what you're doing or is it a giant kiss ass party?

fam I aint organizing any lain commune myself, I already live with enough lains as it is. My suggestion is just action first and less planning. If you want it to happen, make it happen, no dilly dallying. Trying to get mass agreement is dillydallying, that's not neccisarily against polite suggestions, but there's been a lain commune discussion for, err, how many years ?
Its ridiculous and you seem to have nothing to show for it.
Chans like this aren't good for making generall agreements about gameplans. Its like 4chan making software. Frankly I'm surprised there isn't a better logo for the lain commune by now. Someone should get on that.
If this is ever going to happen, at some point someone is going to have to put together a corporation or whatever, go look at houses, pick one, and put down the money to buy it. I don't think discussions seem to be making that happen faster, or in a fashion more agreeable to the general community here. If someone has the money and will to do this then by God they should just get on with it and stop talking forever ad naseaum its disgusting. You all are getting older and closer to death stop wasting time.
If that happens, then he'll be the defacto man in charge, and if he listens to advice, good for him, and if he makes arbitrary choices, good for him. Doesn't matter to me, but I don't think this convo is making him any closer to buying the place.
And trying to satisfy everyone I worry is just going to put on the conflicting demands of any design by committee project. You've got the Urbanite Neets and Big Tech Bros who all want big cities and fast internet, fighting the innawoods larpers who just want some goats and potatos. The crazy pacifists who'd shriek with the sounds of years of repressed trauma if they saw a real gun, and the tacticool larpers who'd get mighty anxious if they didn't have their peice on them at all times. You've got Trannies who need their hormones and supportgroups and neonazis who need spanish translations of all important documents. Its a wild mix and its got conflicting groups. You've got people across four continents, with various levels of professional compotence and travel rights. Easier just for someone to make the unilateral choice, if they're willing and able. Won't be perfect, nothing is. But it could actually happen.
Frankly, a lot more likely than this chan pitching in all the crypto and picking a house via strawpol that's then acted on by some Oceanian shell corp, or whatever y'all will end up drifting towards.

I'll admit this is my first time hearing about the lain commune idea. But I agree with the point that someone should just take the first step. I am sure the problem is that none of us have the money individually or collectively to make this happen since I suspect most of us here are either college students or teenagers. It's a neat idea though.
Apoc · 2022-05-03 04:49
it sounds comfy as fuarrrk, and definitely beats my original plan of barely scraping by alone in a studio apartment once i graduate. i've got nothing keeping me where i currently am (in the US) so i would have absolutely zero reservations about dropping everything to live in a commune like this. i've got neither the resources or the know-how to build such a thing but i'll be the first in line in the event it ever gets off the ground

Occasional and recent lainposter here fwiw.
Any kind of commune scenario is a great and logical idea imo.
The problem is that society, by accident or design, will actively act against and discourage any such projects. The only communal living situations allowed to succeed long term are state supported (certain military retirement communities) or religious (various types some very communal and large).
Communal living scenarios will enable people to think and act in a way disruptive to the status quo. The status quo is to individualize and isolate people so that they are not a threat.
Any commune will naturally probably have have enough issues dealing with normal interpersonal relations and the normal pitfalls of group power dynamics. Outside interests that would view a commune as a threat should be avoided.
Larping as some kind of religious group until a commune was securely established might be a good idea.
Ender · 2022-05-03 17:28
Has any commune of any chan ever gone anywhere at all?
Guthrie · 2022-05-04 09:22
One idea is to reside in dugout shelters until proper homes can be built. First image is a dugout shelter and the second is a proper home. Third is if you want fancy.

you can't go from a dugout shelter to that kind of "house" without a lot of capital. i think the best type of long term house to start a commune are small cabins

So all the places I recommended last thread as actually cheap land were rejected? So now it's just a squatter group planned? I mean if you're going to squat find an abandoned missile base. They tend to be fensed off so no one goes in. You will be underground so it helps stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer without electricity even and no one will really see you there just coming and going maybe. It will be well fortified in strength so not like police can ram the doors in. Only concern is safety.

>Yes I understand it's zoned for agricultural use
there's a fair number of places where building things and doing what thou wilt with thy own land is relatively free. Not everywhere is the urban hellhole whence you and your urbanite kin emerged.

>At some point, we'll hit on a spot that that we'll have squatted long enough for adverse possession to kick in.
Doesn't that take between 10 and 25 years, depending on jurisdiction?
Dugout shelters? Abandoned underground missile bases?
There are a tiny number of people in the world with the raw drive and experience and equipment to make ideas like these work. I'm gonna say they're not on lain.
Leaving aside the constant income needed to make a commune work (are we all gonna be highly paid WFH sysops or something?) there are only a couple of models that make financial and legal sense.
1. Rent or buy a cheap warehouse. It will probably be far from where we want to be. "Yes sir, this warehouse will be used for a 24 hour tech support business so there will be employees and contractors coming and going 24 hours. Employees may sleep on site if they work long hours. Yes, I understand that this property is zoned commercial, these employees will not be living on the job site, just resting when they get tired during work."
Use innovative ideas for personal living spaces inside the warehouse.
2. Rent or buy cheap land. It will probably be far from where we want to be. "Yes sir I want to buy this land. It's totally not about bringing a bunch of urban outsiders to your rural area, I just want to build a hunting cabin for me and my son. Yes I understand it's zoned for agricultural use. That's fine, we will of course follow the law and not construct permanent structures."
Use innovative ideas for personal living spaces on this property, like tiny houses I guess.
Ideally there would be a core of 15 people to drive a commune. These would need to be people with a record of existing and achieving IRL for many years, with experience in similar projects, with experience in working co-operatively and effectively in a team environment, and with a constant income stream to be honest.
A commune, properly organized with committees and codes of conduct and all that good stuff necessary to live communally, is a great idea.
Talking about things like squatting abandoned underground missile bases makes it seem like a dumb idea.

I've been wanting this for a long time myself. I've done it with friends a few times to varying levels of success. My current plan is to save up for property then invite people to come live for free. Buses could be used as temporary structures until more permanent facilities are built.
The other option is to squat. I think its doable that way but everyone involved would have to be okay with giving up creature comforts for a mostly homeless lifestyle.
In theory a team of people with different specialties could come together with the sole purpose of establishing living in any environment as fast as possible, military style.
I think starting something like this in a hackerspace could help it get a lot more momentum. I tried to do this kind of thing at noisebridge in SF but got screwed by landlords. Critical mass is essential. There will be more people in urban centers interested in this kind of thing so getting people toghether in the city then moving things out to the country may be the kickstart needed to get sometihing like this rolling.
If someone actually chooses a location and gets 3+ people living on site I will drop everything to help out.
Special Agent Bob · 2022-05-19 00:25
The idea of a single commune probably should be abandoned at this point. It's never going to happen. Just set up in every location, use different ideas in each location and see what ones last.

and of these, small communities of lainers helping lainers and living together or in proximity, we already have at least a couple. It seems to help to have direct personal connexions of the sort you're more likely to get on IRC or Tox in my observations, than the chitchatting with faceless anons on the imgboard.

I've been seeing these threads since forever. Ever actually done anything? Enough daydreaming, go do something or let this years-old necrobump die off.
It just takes 7 or 8 of you, over all these years, to say "hey, I'm game, I made this IRC channel to arrange a meetup in the Wherever area".
Then go there with tents for starters and some car-loads of food. It's trivial if a handful of you actually wanted to do it. Maybe you'll find that the group doesn't work, or the place wasn't good and you have to find another one, and some of you will quit. But some will keep on and that's how it moves forward.
You guys should be posting pics of the progress by now. It's literally been several years. I'll give you a pdf so I'm not just bitching, I think this shows how this needn't be hard.

Maybe some users should do location scouting where they live and work and let us know what they find and if any Lain lives near there enough then you got something started without having to drop all you already have for it.

>Ever actually done anything? Enough daydreaming,
This is the crux of the matter. Brainstorming and theorizing are an important stage in any plan but there comes a point when no action has been taken for so long, the daydream itself becomes a cozy escape. I've seen people do it in weekly face to face meetings where the project has never advanced one single step in months and never will but the meetings have become a comfortable way to socialize. These Lains haven't even organized an in person meeting about this yet.
Let it die. Go find people in your own region, people you might have common values and goals with. Basing a community off of being fans of a cartoon a quarter of a century old? Get real.

I'll take over for now. For this mission I will go by the codename "Bat". Please consider coming to Baltimore, MD. No guarantee of safety - it is extremely dangerous, you will likely get robbed at gunpoint, so get hip to that. But there is safety in numbers. And there are between 16,000-50,000 vacant properties. I've been squatting here successfully for 2 years, it has been a breeze compared to previous a few years in other cities plus almost a decade vanlife. Looking to establish an off-grid library similar to slab city, as well as bigger plans down the line. I have some smart capable friends doing the same thing as well as some in training. I will help you with resources available to help you become independent, thrive as well as contribute.

In past I've brought up cheap land locations and this was completely ignored because no one wanted to live in a relatively isolated rural area where this cheap land often is. New one is Japan is giving away abandoned homes for free currently but i doubt we all are ready to move to Japan. Ive brought it up before several times the idea of a single location has to go because it will never happen no one will agree on just one place alone to pool resources to.

on the contrary its been ignored just like all the other sugestions because there's no particularly large single commune thats ever been put together. Someone suggested cleveland, his suggestion was ignored just like yours, just like everybody elses.

Yeah. Im not sure how large it would take before people want in on something. Place I suggested was somewhere in Colorado i cant remmeber name lf atm because it's middle of the US and I had found cheap land and it has legal cannabis and decriminalized psilocybin mushrooms iirc. Dryer climate so humidity wont kill electronics and away from the ocean so no problem with corrosion of salty air. It also has a wide range of weather conditions depending on altitude so it would have something for most.

there's a lot of lains that have lived together/pooled resources/stuff like this, at least to certain extents. I think the odds of a real large and open laincommune are pretty low and if it happened I'd want nothign to do with it, but I appreciate having the idea swirl around and see peoples thoughts
Nameless · 2023-03-16 19:50
maybe we should shift the focus to providing neetbux to lains independantly doing their own thing to achieve the wired on earth instead of attempting a centralized thing at first. after relative stability is achieved by lains in the network it will be easier to bridge the gap and connect projects as well as aide. cause the ideal i think is burning for all of us but the practical reality of removing ourselves from our current life fixtures and contexts seems to be the major barrier to entry at this point. and nice job alphabet soup for atomizing us and making us so distrusting and demoralized Ara-Ara! uWaaai 〜✧

>What is the least detectable and most reliable/long lived sustainable energy source? Solar panels will be seen, so I'm guessing hydroelectric. The water is inconsistent where I am though.
I assume by energy you mean 'electricity'.
First of all reasonable to point out that hiding i.e. a relatively normal house is going to be pretty difficult, if someone can lay eyes on it, they can point an IR camera at it which will likely quickly show that its inhabited. Avoiding being detected by a spyplane looking for you is very difficult, avoiding being detectable on i.e. google maps much easier (still nontrivial).
if electricity or other available energy is important to you then you must choose a spot where energy is available for capture. if you want to use hydro, next to a river most likely, if you want to use wind, perhaps in a canyon where winds can be high, if you want to use geothermal well obviously a place where that is practical. If you're fixed to a bad location then you will have your work cut out for you, perhaps you can build an arteficial yet discreet canyon. Of course anyone with before and after photos of your abode can see something of your work.
you should read about earthships. how much effort are you able to put into this ?

All I know is for this to work we're going to need to get better organized. Has anyone thought of compiling the 4 threads of competing proposals into a single readable document? The deliberatorium format seems like it would work well here.
