Graffiti

Does anyone have any advice for doing graffiti?
Liet Kynes · 2022-03-28 07:19
DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THE CAN -> Do not sweat the little things, allow mistakes and keep active, enjoy what you do and do it for fun and love <3 Focus more at making a positive difference on the canvas that you are working on instead of trying to be perfect w every line. Let the creativity flow(it is difficult)
Mitnick · 2022-03-28 07:20
Stickers are how I personally go about things, they're easy to make look good, easy to produce (cheap too, for some people). The best thing about them is that they're discreet, makes it very difficult for a pig to spot you applying it. Though they're also easy to remove. I (personally) don't really care if my graffiti gets removed (and it rarely does), as long as it was once seen and was once there, I consider it finished.
brick · 2022-03-28 14:07
For me, stencils are way less intimidating than freehand spraypainting. With more than one layer it can be a little finicky getting them to line up, but "applying" one layer is very fast. Cardboard is free, and it's nice to have some extra around to practice spraypainting onto (freehand *or* stencils). I frequently check behind businesses for nice big pieces of it. If you're feeling unsure about taking a risk and doing something really visible, find someplace public but very quiet and safe (like under a bridge, or a quiet trainyard) and practice there first.
Delilah · 2022-03-28 16:42
Don't be one of those assholes that just graffs their tag. Also I know you're on lainchan but try to be original and don't desecrate walls if you're just going to spraycan memes/anime on walls.
Hiro Protagonist · 2022-03-28 18:55
>>8399 This. Also choose your canvas wisely. Don't mess with people's residential property. Don't mess with businesses either unless they deserve it.
Cat Mother · 2022-03-28 22:31
>>8395 yeah! There's been a ancom going around town spraypainting some anarchy symbols and the nazis keep following chase with painting swastikas, wanna make something fun and mess with them both, seriously, it's a wall, have fun and paint that thing whatever that thing be

>>8394 Use stencils for smaller stuff don't know about larger scale graffiti
Yu-ichi · 2022-04-10 05:17
just paint over bad public art. Went through a big city today with a lot of garbage public art and I was thinking how it should be more expensive for cities to uglify themselves like that.
Debbie Charteris · 2022-04-11 08:43
Please don't graffiti untouched abandoned sites. I knew a massive abandoned club that was hidden away in some carpark basement, but a friend posted it on social media and it got fuaaarked up by graffiti in the next few months much love in advance from an urbexanon
Dozer · 2022-04-11 09:40
It may actually be cheaper in the long run and better for your health to invest in a refillable air based spray paint can and a decent respirator. >>8398 Some people use stencil guides to make smoothe edges and curves and dithering or whatever on otherwise freeform stuff.
Neo · 2022-04-11 22:42
>>8403 Anarchists doing graffiti seems in line with their views on property but Neo-nazis who believe in law and order and authority and all that.... someone ought to remind them, vandalism is a crime.
Unknown · 2022-04-11 23:41
>>8451 don't strawman neonazis. They're a diverse group with a lot of different positions and attitudes. Some might be pro 'law and order', but plenty might also just be vaugely anti establishment, using swastikas like people used pentagrams and inverted crosses 20 years ago, symbol of the public enemy number one, once Satan and now Hitler. Some might also be pro law and order but accept that they're under an enemy order with whom they're at war. Also don't have to be an NN to swastikapost.

>>8394 Hi Lainon, I've done graffiti a few times. The best advice I'd say depending on where you are (beginner, intermediate, expert) is: >starting out just pick a soykafty tag, get a biro pen or pencil and fill up a whole book with it. all capitals, don't add any fancy soykaf (even if you think it looks cool, ABSOLUTELY NO HALOS, CROWNS, ARROWS, etc). the biggest and most important thing to learn here is; don't fuarrrk around with your letters just yet, do it slow and make it as natural as possible, style and add-ons will come later. don't throw your godawful tag anywhere until you've finished a book on it. it takes about a week, if you're dedicated and it works out a lot in the long run. Then start work on throwies, don't be afraid of the can, etc etc. Talk to local writers and put up. >intermediate join online communities, WATCH soykaf. don't be afraid to steal lots of ideas starting out, no one will care until you're serious. steal loads, try lots and just generally try to have fun. >expert you'll know you're at this stage when you know what you're doing. have fun lainons, there's a good reddit about this stuff. reddit.com/r/graffhelp

Spooky · 2022-05-02 12:40
>>8401 >unless they deserve it most businesses deserve it. good businesses should be fine with graffiti so long as it's adding to the space. that means don't cover up their windows or signs, and it also means be careful about covering other art. before you cover other art, try to gauge the community's opinions of it, but ultimately it's up to your own judgement based on your own taste, whether the art you're about to add will be better than what it's covering. >>8403 be careful to not unintentionally create a new sincere political position that makes no sense. if it's intentional it might be good for a laugh, but be careful >>8454 i'll have you know my autism is and was fairly mild. the real culprit was systematic abuses terrorizing me for just being myself. im healing from that
The Oracle · 2022-05-19 23:55
>>8395 This. If you mess up, who's going to care? Bottom feeders will not notice, or just think it's the soykaf, and any liberal retard college art student will see it as 'creative'. normal person psh cunts think all graffiti is grubby, and even if it's soykaf no one will know it was you

>>8467 >just pick a soykafty tag, get a biro pen or pencil and fill up a whole book with it. all capitals, don't add any fancy soykaf Best advice for a beginner to be honest. Just fill out book after book of basic lettering. Eventually style is slowly developed. >>8662 Under bridges. Back of the walls that line motorways. Walking tunnels. The outsides of toilet blocks in sports fields etc. Could even go into an empty construction site, they will paint over the walls anyway (example). Basically any large area of concrete that is out of the way and people wont care if its painted.

>>8467 This. also some tips if youre trying to be an active, legitimate, writer. >get some "painting clothes" preferably durable, mobile and most importantly something you dont care to get paint on dark blues and greys work best, black actually usually sticks out more in most shades of night >learn when and when not to give a soykaf chances are if youre in a city with a healthy graff culture, noones gonna give a soykaf if you tag even in broad daylight, tags and throws is good for observing how other writers get their work done, i recommend their edition on zexor, may he rest in peace, to really get an idea on just how much you can get away with >dont be afraid of keeping things simple most of the bast tags are very simple, or emphasize perfection of simple methods/style theres so much more like paying homeless for loyal lookouts, and the magic of retractable ladders, but youll find a lot by just immersing yourself in the lifestyle, dont touch the third rail and enjoy the rush
The Oracle · 2022-06-01 14:54
thought I had already posted in this thread anyway I graff my tag with one color, I've tried some drawings too but I legit suck. So I just stick to my tag
Special Agent Bob · 2022-07-10 12:37
Hey I've been getting into graff too, I recommend practicing on some scrap wood if you really wanna get a feel for cans. I found this big fibrewood plate in the street at some point and felt like practicing some characters on it, that soykaf is often being thrown out in deconstruction sites so it's practically free and a nice personal canvas to test the waters on. Just be careful to not mess up other stuff like tiles or anything else on your balcony
Gyula Kovacs · 2022-07-11 13:14
I recently got interested in it after a friend showed me some of his tags. I suck dick with cans so I bought a 7mm and 15mm marker and I'm going to mess around with those, hopefully I am better using markers
Dujour · 2022-07-15 04:21

My Father is a graffiti artist, grew up my entire life with the culture and it taught me to be more respectful as a person. Just respect other artists and their yards, be nonconfrontational, and learn how to take soykaf. You're going to be a toy for a while, don't take it as an insult, use it as a learning opportunity and a time to make mistakes. That combined with practice and you'll learn along the way. Goodluck.
Netrunner · 2023-10-29 00:06
I'll text my bf and see what he has to say, IDK much about this, I just know the people.

>>10984 [picrel, freight moniker note: Don't go over these even if u think they're simple or worth going over, this is an entirely different branch of graffiti and imo it should be respected as is] Don't try to be too cool, do what you can, don't write crazy handstyle cause you think its what you're supposed to do Cause if you start off trying to write with a style it's going to look like soykaf guaranteed Don't get caught I guess Don't write with soykafty mediums like sharpies and pens Don't write on people's soykaf purposefully unless you're planning on covering the entire thing with something better Like at all Don't write over soykaf that's especially old, be courteous Don't sidebust people like don't write your thing next to someone else's thing in a really apparent spot That's what gets stuff painted over (buffed) Like if I write on a blank fence and it stays up for a while, someone tags next.to it. Then it gets all buffed over. Don't copy someone else's name on purpose. Have mercy on the freight monikers. (usually the designs and faces you see on train cars, or more broadly monikers on walls etc.) Don't pick a retarded name Usually people start with something retarded like "evil" or "master" or "doc" or something edgy and narcissistic Don't do that Dont just pick random nonsense because its easy for you to write either Maybe pick something you like that you'd be fine if someone knew you as, like a good nick name or something. t.BF

>>8396 I've been looking into making and placing stickers in places, how do you make them look good? I've tried before and they all look like soykaf
Donna Hawthorne · 2024-02-08 18:13
>>11149 just like any artform, practice practice practice. or ai but thats kinda lame to be honest. as for making the stickers themselves i use one of the many sticker print companies. you can get like weatherproof and uv-resistant ones, and with cool effects. just be aware that unless you use paper stickers, which will disintegrate and fade relatively quickly, vinyl will turn into microplastic when it eventually falls up/breaks apart, albeit longer time. when it comes to placement, i like putting them in like hidden spaces where people that "go off the beaten path" get a little treat of seeing a cool sticker or some graffiti/streetart, and perhaps add their own like a guestbook. the ethics of graffiti is its own subject but personally im not a fan of doing anything to peoples houses and cars or whatever, or public toilets, gaspumps or slapping up a soykafty throwup on a random fence. placement is a very important part of it too i think, not just putting the same tag every 100ft along a concrete wall. i guess just be tasteful? idk glhf
