Semiconductor Synthesis - Home

kiwami · 2022-03-26 16:51
Dear Lainons, I have undertaken quite a task - I want to make semiconductor devices at home. I have already drafted some plans for a PN-Diode. From a simple diode I will introduce photo-litography. But! I need chemicals which is hard to get. I live in Germany, does anyone know >Chems supplier that delivers to persons >Cheap chems (does not have to be legal) or >established home fab techniques/ tutorials/ book? My plan is as follows: Get POCl_3 get p-type wafer and heat them with small stripes masked in the wafer. (very abstracted) Any input is welcome y'all ^^

>>8384 >chemicals illegal in Germany color me surprised Are they legal in Poland by any chance? t. Poland here maybe some hackerspace on border with Germany would be interested in DIY semiconductors and you live not far from there? They can possibly order some chemicals as they are ordering from Poland.

Surely you've done your research into "prior art" and came across https://www.youtube.com/c/SamZeloof/videos . And you've looked at ALL HIS STUFF, ALL THE SPACE HE HAS. And you've conclouded that, obviously, the showstopper is the chems? Really? You're aware that even in the best parts of the US where test equipment and vacuum parts are a-plenty, that stuff he has is still "quite the investent", to put it lightly. In germany availability is often far worse and prices often are a lot higher. And, as you've already discovered, getting chemicals is a lot harder as well. I'm not one to discourage plenty-a-tinkering but think long and hard about how much time (years...), space and money will be needed.

>>8409 Here's something out-there: Where do you think the process can be optimized? If any place? And for how much capital investment?

>>8431 The limit is process verification. Say you cobbled together supplies and knowledge to do the most basic manufacturing, stuff like masking, doping, etching, metallizing for contacts. How do you verify it has worked? Electrical tests are the least worry at this point, how do you check what went wrong or can be optimized. Even most basic optical inspection needs metallurgists microscope, phase plates and polarized light and stuff. Next step up might be electron microscope already! Then there is a whole gaggle of related techniques that can "bolt on" to do materials analysis. Basically, if you have to ask "can I afford to do it", you are already out.

>>8384 what's your process? what are your target device dimensions? >>8435 you don't need an electron microscope for anything you'd do diy. I've done 10um processes and inspected both it and 2um processes with only an optical microscope. I don't think there was any funky polarization involved either. For making a diode, the most important values are junction depth and doping. You can determine doping from the sheet resistance of the base wafer (it's a spec) and of the diode (four-point probe - might be hard). Junction depth is determined by a groove and stain. >>8435 would be fun

>>8436 I guess we'll fly everyone in from around the world, say once a month? Upside is, everyone can bring new old equipment in their baggage, no hassle with international shipping and import dutys. We'll have to pick a location where a makeshift cleanroom and a shop space with machinery already available, not much luck getting that stuff into a hand bag...

>>8441 Mexico's "Silicon Border" fits. Discreet, cheap, and permissive. Weekend days when factories are closed anyway. Plenty of nearby resorts to maintain culpable deniability of attendance. Spooks can come too we wouldn't be doing anything wrong. Laincon when

>>8409 Zeelof as been said is lucky to live near sources of 2nd/3rd hand test equipments, people with know how and I assume also has rich parents (I mean in at least initial phase of his experiments) or other source of income that might not be as much achievable outside his city. Replicating his lab without living in a microchip tech hub might be an order of magnitude harder even for a person with proper technical education.
