Looking to ID a mystery electronic component

Bob Arctor · 2022-02-19 15:15
I picked up one of those arduino starter kits with a ton of various components, to see if I wanted to pick back up with an electronics hobby I stopped when I was a teenager. (Turns out I do!) But it came with a couple of these components that I can't ID. There's no markings on either side, or description for it in the package contents, it's just a smooth black sphere 2mm in diameter with two leads. I've done quite a bit of online searching and reverse image searches but no luck. Does anyone know what it could be?

>>8229 run power through it and see if t catches on fire, report back plz. Are you sure its not just a simple soykafty nonstandard resistor?

>>8229 Looks like tantalum capacitor

kinda makes me think of a thermistor

>>8229 looks like a resistor. Run 9V through it and see if it gets warm. Alternatively it could be a capacitor. If running volts doesn't make it warm but instead makes it pop then it was probably a capacitor. If it doesn't get warm or anything, then remove the power source and bridge the two legs, if it discharges suddenly then you have a capacitor. If it's neither of these things then I dunno, go to an electronics shop and ask.

>>8229 If it came with an arduino starter kit, it's probably a thermistor. If you have a multimeter, measure its resistance at room temperature, then just hold it in your hand to warm it up to body temperature and measure again. If resistance drops, it's an ntc thermistor, if it rises, it's a ptc thermistor, if it does nothing, it's something else.

>>8235 Neat, thanks for the info.

>>8235 You were right, a little multimeter testing shows it to be a 10K NTC thermistor. Thank you!
