Coilgun

So, I'm pretty sure the last thread is gone by now but I've been researching this topic. I'm using nikola tesla's pancake coil, about i think it's 24 or 40 of themand for the power source I'm using 2 9volt DC batteries converted into 83volts AC(last I checked)using a L293D and 555 timer with a transformer, eveready seems to last longer than energizer or DG brand but the voltage seems to be stable but it climes. once this is done I'm gonna start working on the IR scope using one of those ball security cameras and taking out the IR lens, and a simple little 2 inch LCD screen. and yes I'm using the barret design because circle.

This is what I got so far as well as the camera and the coil design

>>7957 this is dope as all hell but what kind of FPS and PPSI do you think it'll give off?
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2021-12-21 20:02
>>7965 to be honest, have no idea, getting it built is just half of the project, the other half is getting my hands on liquid helium to cool the coils to super conductivity, it should at least be faster than a bullet. although, I have one problem right now, the batteries get warm and idk if it has something to do with the draw or the fast that it's alternating.
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2021-12-21 20:05
>>7970 the blue paper is my solusion to the alternating issue of the batteries, because (I think) it's pulling on the negetive and pushing on the posotive, idk if the L293D does that though, it probably doesn't.....
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2021-12-27 07:52
so, i'm gonna use an op amp with the timer instead then connect it to the 9 to 110 trnsformer then that to a microwave transformer (110 to 5600 volts) and incorporate a tesla coil into it. hopefully I can arches follow the projectile and the projectile break the sound barrier and create a sonic boom, like thunder and lightning.
lainon · 2021-12-27 11:17
>>8010 >shooting a projectile with sound speed oy m8, do you have a loicence 4 that?
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2021-12-27 16:28
>>8012 I looked into this, it's 100% legal
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2021-12-27 16:33
>>8012 also it has the potential to go faster than that, I think the theory is that it can travel at almost the speed of light 🤔

>>7957 I'm not familiar with magnetic field theory, but would putting parallel spiral rods and putting current through them induce some kind of propelling force? especially if you have a series of capacitors pulse electricity into it?
Nobody important · 2021-12-30 17:59
>>8021 Lorentz force. That's how a railgun works, though they're usually not spirals, just straight rails, hence the name. I guess making them spirals could help stabilize the projectile, but at the same time increase friction, which is what you're typically trying to minimize. Both approaches have pros and cons, coilguns (aka Gauss guns) are generally more of an electrical engineering challenge (fast switching, precisely calibrated timing, high frequency high current pulses), while railguns are electrically simpler while providing more of a mechanical/materials engineering challenge (high friction, extreme temperatures, rails falling apart or just plain melting).
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2021-12-30 19:18
>>8021 to my understanding the rilgun won't do much unless it comes into contact with a magnetic feild, like sticking a refridgerator magnet on it or just a small winding of copper going arond the rails. the electrical force can hardly move anything, but again you don't need much of it, I just thought it'd be easier to make a guass gun, especially if you're using tesla's work.
Dozer · 2022-01-02 13:42
>>8045 Railguns don't need magnets, the projectile doesn't even have to be ferromagnetic. Any electrical conductor works. >the electrical force can hardly move anything It goes up exponentially with current. Don't expect much from a 10A lab supply, most designs use capacitor banks pumping out tens or hundreds of kiloamps.
Anamika · 2022-01-02 14:07
>>8044 Would using a mag-lev system of projectile stabilization eliminate friction enough to propel the projectile at high velocity?
Elliot Alderson · 2022-01-02 16:24
>>8064 Possibly. I've heard about designs using a magnetically levitating projectile and laser-induced plasma channels to create frictionless electrical contacts, but no idea if it actually works. Or maybe forget the lasers and just increase the voltage enough it starts arcing between the rails and the projectile (roughly 3 kilovolts per mm iirc), though I imagine your rails would start eroding pretty fast.
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-06 16:13
>>8063 now that I think about it, you're right
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-08 22:39
I've tried several different cuircuts, I can't get the ua741 to work
Demeere · 2022-01-09 09:52
>>8099 Why do you need an opamp? Post a schematic.
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-09 16:21
>>8102 the 555 timer will pulse on a low voltage and then connect to the op amp to double it so the transformer will have less of a draw in the batteries.
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-09 16:30
I basically need AC for this project to work and I don't want to use large circuit boards or large a large power supply. I'll be lucky if I can use (volt batteries but I'd like to use those 3.7 batteries.
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-10 00:05
I fried the whole thing, I'm fuarrrking done
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-10 06:19
okay, maybe I'm giving up too soon. would a 0.5 to 9/10 volt transformer and/or capacitor cut down on the draw?
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-13 22:23
I think it's pretty accurate but I spent two days trying to figure it out
7R45H-P4ND4 · 2022-01-15 20:25
I fixed it, now it's better

Just came across this, this guy has a google spreadsheet to compare different coil geometries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm_oZZZBLj8 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kq2KSd6Jm8nOTF1i-om9HG1a3Bewon6x4_GM7OMPkRo Check the video description for more links. >>8164 >5600 volts I see you like to live dangerously.
