Improving chicken eggs
Eggman · 2021-07-05 01:51
I am gonna move to another place quite soon and I'll have access to a garden. I plan on having a bunch of chickens to lay eggs. This because eggs are one if the highest foods in choline and cholesterol, choline being essential for memory and cholesterol for hormone production. I am not sure how to increase the choline content of the egg and how to go about nutritionally fortifying the chicken feed to get fortified eggs. I was also wondering how to go about doing this in the most cyberpunk way. Of course you have the usual automatic coop door powered by an arduino but is there anything else one could do with chickens? other things related to food production in one's garden are also welcome in this thread.

Also thinking of breeding aquatic snails in a small pond for chicken feed production. How many bladder snails would I be able to produce in a pond or a tank? And how would I go about optimizing this process? Would a sensor to measure the hardness of the water help or would it be better to just throw in as much calcium as possible?

give them DBZ scouters

Put them in simulated reality to minimize occupied land surface

Are aquatic snails an ideal food for chicken?
Anyway, for me the hardest part is maintaining cleanliness of the chickens' living spaces, maybe a small modified roomba could do the work.

Has anyone tried this in real life(lol)? My gut tells me that chickens would be able to discern VR from actual "reality".

Chummer, keeping chickens is A. A lot of work, B. Dirty Business and C. Demanding responsibility. If you understand all three of these points, get a mug (yes, a cup, not a glass, not a bottle or can, a mug) of beer, a simple sandwich, put on a baseball cap or straw hat, and only then continue reading
Go.
Alright, you got your hillbilly starter pack, now open your brainports, and read carefully.
Keep em outside.
Keep em fed, watered, soykaffree = keep em happy.
If ya can't keep em outside, give em as much space as possible, and get them as much fresh green grass as possible.
Keep their sleep area clean= clean up the soykaf every 2 weeks. Change the wood shavings too, wood shavings are better than straw, also cheaper in some areas.
Give them grain. Grain shouldn't be too expensive, I get a 25 kilo bag for 10€, and 2 bags of grain (corn, wheat) keep 5 chickens fed for 2 months. That is, if they also eat lots of fresh greens. Don't feed to much protein, they will start picking on eachother. Too many beans make your eggs taste strange. Chickens are different, try out things with yours. Mine strongly dislike beans, but love corn. Also, worms. Choose your race according to your needs. Smaller races need less space, but give smaller eggs, are more vulnerable to predators. I let my chickens run free, they're fvckhuge (race:Brahma) and no one touches them. If you let em run free, they should catch enough rainworms and bugs for protein. If you need to give em protein, use worms. You can grow those, very schway, also can be automated and requires low maintenance. For good eggs, give em calcium, that'll make the egg shell properly strong.
Chicken poop: keep. Good source of minerals, if you have some space left, use it for gardening purposes. Wonderful fertilizer, use carefully, there are lots of instructions on the net. Otherwise, chickens are like humans, only with stronger flight instinct, and if you have trouble interacting with humans, you will have trouble interacting with chickens. But don't let this dissuade you, keeping chickens is great. If you have further questions, ask, it's free of charge.

What the fuarrrk?
Why not just eat insects or protein-rich plants instead?

Insects are 50% feces by volume. To you like eating fried turds? Welcome to South-East Asia.
Plant protein has less bioavailability than animal protein, plants also lack micronutrients and animal fat.
"Cow eat grass why human not eat grass instead of cow" is XIX century-tier vegetarian thought. Nutrition science has progressed since.

I think that's less but I still prefer that over chickens living in cyberpunk dystopia.
And that's not an argument. Insects are still more protein rich compared to vertebrate meat even if 50% of their volume is feces which I doubt.
>it's feces
So what? The main reason not to eat human and vertebrate feces are parasites and diseases. You can't get that from mealworms.
Still doesn't stop rich people from eating poop anyway:

>"Cow eat grass why human not eat grass instead of cow" is XIX century-tier vegetarian thought. Nutrition science has progressed since.
Today we have GMO and biochemistry, it's easier to implement a perfect GMO plant rather than chicken dystopia.
Either you care about chickens and let them live freely or you make a cyberpunk dystopia, you can't do both.

Chickens are not something to cyberpunk, anon. Factory farming and the like, even at the point that it is at today, cannot produce anything as tasty as something more traditionally farmed. Read a couple books on chicken farming and homesteading. The most cyberpunk thing you should be doing is an automated coop door or maybe a rainwater filter, that is all.
Nell · 2021-07-07 06:37

OP, don't. Chickens need fresh air, lots of space and fresh greens and worms to pick. Dystopian farming practices make chickens suffer, and their eggs will taste accordingly. If you want to be le cyberpunk homesteader, and grow your own protein in optimized conditions, you should think about getting mealworms and learning how to process them.

Feed them a source of calcium such as oyster shells to fortify the egg shell. Other than that, just let nature do it's thing.
Netrunner · 2021-07-07 07:03
hah chickens are easy af to keep. open the coop door in the morning, they wander around eating bugs all day, then they get scared and return by night so all you have to do is close the door. if they eat lots of bugs then the eggs will nutritious.
you just need enough space and maybe a non-lazy dog to keep foxes away. only cyberpunk addition i can think of is an automated turret on their head that will scan for foxes and shoot something at them.

its not about functionality its about sending a message. imagine not chickens but same technology with ostriches.

you fraggin' madman, turret ostriches? what next, artillery elephants?!

case in point, that's how i keep my chickens. they even hunt ants, which is why i'm mostly ant-free. but OP still hasn't given any additional info, not even replied to the answers provided. OP, come back, don't tell me you forgot about your thread!

From experience the best way to increase egg quality it to let the chickens graze on a small part of land. Some people say fertilized eggs are better but I haven't noticed any difference. Calcium supplements are only needed if you notice them eating their own eggs. Roosters well literally die for hens so haveing one isnt a bad idea.

It is humans keeping domestic animals that has caused their populations to far exceed what their natural numbers could be.
If you care about chickens then you'll raised some and eat their lifeless corpses after providing a rewarding chicken life.

>improving eggs
feed calcium (egg shells or ground seashells)
feed little grain, let them graze on green pasture, eating greens and insects.
keep the group relatively small (7-8 chickens and 1 rooster)
>fortifying eggs
sh!t tier, only corpos and big farmer does that. Also goes against
>Cyberpunking.
don't have to. Raising your own food independent from big corpos and their corpcoctions is already schway as fvck.
Remember that cyberpunk is largely a protest against corporations controlling every aspect of ones life. Taking back a very essential aspect of your life, your food... Well, can't really get more cyberpunk than that.

You could also train the chickens to kill intruders.
