Let's see your "Lain" style PC setups.
Ivan Horvat · 2021-07-03 22:18
Was talking about this a bit in tech, someone else thought it would be a good idea as well.
Can't really contribute myself to this with any post of my own but I think it would be cool to see these pics.
It can be a terminal desktop screen shot,
Physical hardware setup or maybe even a personal server.

Recently I haven't been able to set up a proper setup like I had in my old room. Bipolar, mostly depressed for the past year, and that made doing anything excessively painful.
However, at my old place, I used to make and do TONS of soykaf that could be considered Lain-worthy.
If there was a book I wanted to have physically to read, I'd just print the whole damn thing (I was mostly still in school back then) and take it wherever I went, usually with a string or rubber band or something to keep the whole bundle together. I'd have to cut out each individual page, then sort them. I printed C Programming A Modern Approach, The Dialectic of Sex, and I think a few pdfs on binary analysis.
Later, I ended up getting a concerta script. I was really stupid back then, nowadays I'd prefer the XR, but I cracked the capsules open and fuarrrked with it so I could freebase it. Stupid, but it was fun, and I enjoy the memories I made with it.
I'm quite fond of arachnids, so when some of my stepdad's friends came over with a couple scorpions they found, I jumped at the opportunity to keep them as pets. I don't think I was a very good family member to them, but I loved them. I convinced my mom that it was ok if I just kept them over the winter, since these kinds of scorpions need to find warm human shelter to hibernate in. Unfortunately they didn't sleep in my containers, so that must've been a very exhausting summer afterwards. I cried when I had to let them go.
I originally had those long, industrial-type tube lights in the ceiling of my room, but our roof had tons of leaks so over time the outlets started going out. Eventually only one was left, so I hooked it up to a power strip (hanging from the ceiling) and plugged that into a little lamp and a set of christmas lights. I also ended up buying an LED tube light. I preferred that sort of lighting, anyway.
I used to have a really minimalist metal bar bunk bed, but there was a time when we moved for about a month. I got a folding couch futon, but it broke so all I was left with was this mattress. It was still pretty lain vibes to sleep on the floor though, and I preferred the floor anyway.
The room was constantly infested with roaches. Now I love most bugs, but I have a burning hatred for roaches. It was like a constant war with those fuarrrkers crawling in my shirt while I slept.
The internet signal out in my room was often very sparse, so I eventually took a small portable metal clothes rack and used some hangers and a rope to tie a long wooden board beneath it. Then, I took one of my laptops and set it on top of the board. I set up my laptop to act as a wifi extender. I had a raspberry pi, but I was always convinced I'd find something cooler to do with it. (I never did...)
I ended up getting this awesome record/cassette player / radio, and sometimes played my mom's old 70s and 80s rock records on it. I wished I had the money to buy some awesome breakcore or old 90s dubstep records. I do now, but the machine is still in my old place.
I met my partner online a few months before I moved out. We bought gifts for eachother sometimes, when we had the money. She bought me a tachikoma plush and a lain bear hoodie once, and I loved them and wore them often. I live with her now. We both love lain.
One of my favorite pastimes back then was to take apart various devices I had and try to put them in new, homemade cases, or sometimes just to get them to work with no case at all. It would usually teach me a lot about how the macro components interacted.
When I found Nick Land and the CCRU, I started writing various ideas of theirs on papers and putting them on a wall next to ripped up pieces of cardboard from things like hot pockets boxes and printer test pages. I felt that doing this allowed me to create a kind of portal like a 'black mirror' to communicate with the Lemurs of the Ccruian system.
I was obsessed with the occult, and had a deep intuition that something fundamental linked freedom and technology, so I often incorporated ethernet wires for connection (opening new paths of escape) in various ceremonies and slept on a bed of them.
I used to get really paranoid that if I threw away even one paper with my personal information on it, that someone would find it and try to track me down, so if I wanted to get rid of some paper I'd usually burn it in the backyard or in this small wood working room behind my room.
My room was technically a part of the garage that had been separated by a wall and a door and had carpet laid across the floor, so heating and AC were sparse. Because of this I ended up using a staple gun and plastic sheets to cover up the enormous windows in my room that connected it to the grocery store parking lot right next to it. Though I'd frequently get paranoid someone outside was watching me and I'd rip a small hole in it so I could peek through it and check if anything sketchy was happening outside.
I have all sorts of pictures and stories from this time, like the time I had to write several essays for my college level courses at the end of the semester with nothing but several sheets of ritalin to help, or my experiments with sleep deprivation and late night discord escapades in the middle of my calculus course (which I loved very much, and seriously regret my disrespect towards the instructor and the subject in our last semester), but I think this wall of text is large enough so I'll just reply if anyone else is interested.
I used to play the PS Lain theme on loop on my raspi through this huge flatscreen tv that never worked for my stepdad in the living room but always worked for me in my room for some reason. I've always been convinced that technology just likes me.
Otherwise, here's a picture of a can-pipe of weed, a screen with my raspi setup, and my old school laptop that I modded the hell out of.

My setup is dominated by DIY, scrap and improvisation. I used headsets for a long time, until I found an old, but still quite good microphone, meant to be attached to a stand. Since I didn't have the stand, I glued it to a piece of concrete, and just had it stand there for 2 years. Then, I got my hands on a broken telescopic mirror, of which I took off the mirror and handle, and just used the telescopic part, which I attached the mic to, and the other end I screwed to an old neodymium magnet that I scavenged from an ancient, broken HDD. This construction now stands on my speaker, stuck on a dumbbell weight, about at mouth height, and it's adjustable.
My cables are unorganized, and mostly free hanging, except some that I bound with cable ties. Lastly, my monitor (about 10 years old) is attached to the wall with 2mm thick steel strips, screwed into the wall with torx screws. Oh, I recently got a used pc, and installed a fresh GPU for better performance, and since it reached 95° quite easily, and because the new pc is too quiet for my taste, I scavenged an old DC fan from my previous system, and screwed it to the new computer. That's all I can find right now, maybe there's more if I think about it, but I'm pretty used to improvising, so I don't really notice it anymore.

Really cool setup, and nice story, chummer. Would love to hear more about the modded laptop, did you install new components, hacked some new ports to the board, or something else? It definitely sounds intriguing, as I don't know many people who actually mod their lappies, they mostly just put stickers on it or put tape over the webcam.

Same, paper thin walls and no locks on doors makes having a proper sex life a bit hard.
My mum keeps stealing all my meal prepped food as well, which I guess is still far less than the cost of rent but it's a bit annoying thinking you're having the slow cooked chilli you made two weeks ago for lunch and ending up having to have some kind of mediocre sandwich from the canteen instead

fuarrrk off landlord
H.R. Giger · 2021-11-06 15:19
>>7603
I'm not a landlord, I don't even think landlords should even exist. I'm just saying there are some advantages to renting a house versus owning it in some cases and this is different from apartment renting. This doesn't necessarily mean a landlord involved either. There is such a thing as housing cooperatives where everyone shares ownership which does have some similarities to renting due to the shared ownership.

Depending on your situation, buying can be way better for you.
I bought and in a few years it's mine 100%.
If I want to move, I can sell it and have my money back + more money (I fixed the interior, repainted the walls etc, nothing too hard to do but the selling price will be higher than when I bought it).
I can even move before it's 100% mine and have enough money to buy another one, because I can "sell" the loan in my country (not sure if you can do it in the US).
If I rented and wanted to move, I own nothing and get 0 money back for buying/renting a new one.
Of course it depends on your situation/country but in my case, renting was way worse then straight up buying it. (And I pay only like 100$/mo more in loan compared to the renting price.)
Lady Jessica · 2021-11-06 15:46

renting a house for 20 years is going to cost you way more than buying the same house, even when you include stuff like maintenance and property taxes, because the landlord just passes all those expenses onto you.

>I can even move before it's 100% mine and have enough money to buy another one, because I can "sell" the loan in my country (not sure if you can do it in the US).
in the US all mortgages come with a clause that lets the indebted party pay back the loan if they acquire the house for a certain sum. Basically you agree to sell the house to someone, it moves into escrow, you get their payment, and you use it to pay off your loan, then it moves out of escrow into their property.

I've been collecting old laptops since before I was able to fix them, and eventually my family started giving me their old electronics to add to the pile. So far I have 3 HP computers, all different generations, one Dell laptop, a Toshiba I took the head off of when the hinges gave, a fireTV cube, a boroscope, a nest of RCA cables, some Koss headphones in need of new drivers and a 3.5mm jack, an old 4:3 LCD monitor, a small plasma tv, 2 WinXP setup discs, and a small collection of misc floppies I got from a real estate agency going out of business. I think I have win NT server 4 on floppies. No floppy drive though, so I have no way of reading them right now :(
The headless toshiba is running win8.1 and hooked to the TV, serving as basically a DVD player with extra features. Since I still have the lid I think eventually I want to remove the bluetooth and wlan antennae to reconnect to the base. And way off in the future (when I'm better at software/programming, or at least more comfortable with linux) I want to set up a raspi as a kind of homebrew Alexa and have a small offline network of things in my room. Digital assistants are cool, I just don't trust things that have to be always online.
Uhh also soon I want to downgrade to a Blackberry to better manage my screen addiction. And because they're cute. lol

Well, I can't take a new picture of this anytime soon, but this is from Dec 10th. The machine with all the monitors is my new desktop, that is actually a server running Gentoo with 64GB of RAM and 2x E5-2665 cpus... then my home server behind it running OpenBSD on an i5-4570 running 24GB of RAM, but theres actually 2 16gb sticks on the rack as well. Then there's about 5 rpis, two arent running atm, three are. There's also my wife's old computer thats just sitting there for now, although I was considering using it to increase the amount of cores I can use with distcc. Oh, and I have a chromebook; my wife's t420 and macbook pro; about 3 switches, 2 routers, and about 4 or 5 external hard drives sitting up there. The only things not in use are the chromebook, t420, and macbook pro. The switches are in use and running cables throughout my room to the house, and the external hdds are actually being used by the house server.
Then, not pictured but now sitting on there as well my (old) main machine, my t420 runninge Gentoo, and my other machine a x200, running OpenBSD, that I can't really use until I replace the battery. Really all the thinkpads need new batteries.
I wish I had the picture of my room prior to moving here. My entire wall was just covered in computers, monitors, keyboards, and milk crates. Then there were cables all over the damn place. It looked a little bit like Lain's room, but less cool.

in the second pic? yeah, those are audiocables leading from the Speaker/Amplifier you see in the third pic, to the subwoofers i got on top of my shelf. I rarely use them, so i didn't bother redoing them properly. They're just twisted together and taped off with electrical tape.
Now that i'm back here: is someone knowledgeable in modding laptops? My friend has a beat up old laptop, which isn't bad by itself, but its case is pretty much FUBAR, and he plans on using the internals in a small box to host a small server for teamspeak or small game sessions. now here's the question: can he glue the screen to a flat surface? does he need to prepare it somehow? is some kind of insulation needed? does anyone have any experience with that?

I have been building this setup over the years so of course it looks a little hackish, but that's common for the cyberpunk life. I was more focused on hardware so that I can learn and practice my skills. And I am happy to document my battlestation now in it's present state than to present it in it's full nude glory once it's finished. BTW once it's finished I will likely have a threadripper build. My big project is the OS and the virtualization and haven't peaked out my 12 cores and 64 gigs of ram just yet. In the mean time I plan to build a desk, upgrade my case or modify this one and upgrade my monitor. I want to get a samsung ultrawide curved display with higher frame rate than my present 4k. I'd likely have both set up for different uses anyway.
And to answer your question my walls are green because this is my childhood room. I am getting to the walls and floors soon along with the rest of my parents house as a part of fixing my life. I mean quitting drugs was a start and I could just abandon this house in the state it's in, but fixing it is a part of my fixing my life. The skills I am learning are invaluable and will make my life easier later down the road. I will be fixing all the walls, floors and paint through this house. I will redo the ac outlets and maybe upgrade the houses wiring since it's over 50 years old. I want to wire ethernet through the walls rather than a hole in the floor especially since I am doing the floors. And in the process continue building my surveillance system, server and firewall. And I will keep learning circuit design and microprocessor programming for my own purposes such as security or garden controller. This is if I can stand to stay here once I have money saved and a higher income.
As with many lainions I am living with my parents and can't stand it. Though that's just perfect since it is driving me to improve every day. I may try to get a place nearby or live out of my car and tent just to get some peace and quite until I finish this endevour. But all the things I am doing will make up a pretty solid portfolio and help in the presently developing dystopia.

I'm still planning my next build, but I might buy the new intel CPU that was released a day ago. I looked at the best sales I could find and the total cost of the 3 platforms, (AM4, AM5 and Intel) roughly looks like this:
AM5:
$400 CPU
Ram included (worth $100. $150 without a sale.)
$300 mobo
=$700
AM 4:
$350 CPU
Ram not included ($50; $100 for good DDR4 ram.)
$100 mobo
=$500-550
------
Raptor Lake
$300 i5-13600K (Microcenter)
$100 DDR 4 ram
$150 b660 mobo or $200 z690
$550-600
--------
Gamer Nexus ran some benchmarks and the i5-13600k for $300 has the best value right now when you factor in the cheaper cost of the motherboards. That might change when AMD cuts the price of Ryzen or releases the 3D v-cache chips in a few months, but the price of their motherboards and DDR5 needs to come down a lot for a budget or mid-range build to be competitive with Intel.

I can't believe this thread has someone spouting off about owning a house and dipshits doing the 'youll own nothing's nonsense. Like I give a single fuarrrk about building equity. Now it's just filled with materialistic norms with something to prove. This place has deteroriated so bad I bet you couldn't even bring up soylent or other meal replacement without someone politicising it and spewing dumb soykafchan memes.

Being enslaved is one of the most spiritually crushing experiences you can possibly have. If you aspire to transcending materialistic norms, then you should be fighting the WEF's attempts to enslave everyone.
