Accidentally cut my SATA power cable

Dr. X · 2021-03-27 10:49
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but I'm in serious trouble. A week ago I wanted to extend my SATA power cable by attaching another wire with 2 connectors to it by I accidentally cut the cord on the wrong side. And now I can't use my system anymore because there isn't any power going to my hard drive. I looked up if where I can buy this cable but it costs 10$ and I'm going to have to wait at least one month to receive it. I know that USB to SATA cables exists but those are going to be a pain to use with USB 2.0. Thanks in regard lainon.

>>6520 Maybe I'm being dumb (I'm soykaf at hardware stuff) but don't you just need to rejoin the cable somehow? Obviously you can't tie them because it's really short but shouldn't you be able to buy wire connecting soykaf at a store to rejoin them? The wires are weird in that they seem to have like multiple smaller bits of metal so maybe that wont work. I assume you don't own a soldering iron and can't solder it?

>I'm going to have to wait at least one month to receive it. Literally spend one hour outside your house. They sell SATA cables there. You can also get this thing fixed in under ten minutes if you take it to the right person.

>>6521 Yes but I can't fit it inside, I have a soldering iron but can't seem to find it atm but I doubt it will have much success. >>6522 I tried a normal power supply but it seems like it works in such a way that the other connectors only work if the main cables are connected to the motherboard. Just did a quick search and SATA power splitters only cost 5$ with next day delivery so I feel pretty stupid for having cut open that cable. See picture to see what I mean.

And this is how the cable originally looked.

Your power supply doesn't have any other SATA power cables? What about other unused power cables like molex? If you have one you could just cut the molex connector off and attach this one instead. Obviously the right thing to do would be solder and heatshrink but you sound like you have no idea what you're doing so I guess twist them together and wrap them individually in tape. The wires are color coded (red=5v, orange=3.3v, yellow=12v and black=gnd) so just connect like to like and don't cut anything that is actually connected on more than one end.

You have a month of practice ahead to become a soldering expert. Remove the wire stubs from the terminal block Tin the ends of the other cut wires with solder Plug in the tinned ends into terminal block Alternatively solder in an extension between where you cut it instead.

>>6525 Here you go. I have an optiplex 7010, they're really small so they can't fit a big power supply in the case and went with the awkward solution of adding only 2 connectors for the motherboard and the cable above is directly connected to the motherboard to power the drive and the CD thing which I don't use and don't care about.

Forgot to attach the image my bad

>>6520 Update. Asked a professional to solder the cable and while he was doing that he used a Thinkpad T400 as the surface on his lap. Decided to take it home instead and it's much more silent and comfortable than using PC.
Agent Smith · 2021-03-30 23:28
>>6545 Congrats, also you've got cash for a T400 but can't spare $10? Just wondering.
Dr. X · 2021-03-31 12:38
>>6555 No, I got it for free. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this.
The Phantom Phreak · 2021-03-31 13:08
>>6558 Where did you get a free thinkpad?
Muscle Man · 2021-09-09 13:18
>>6528 really just but a new cable from dell unless you need it ASAP no need to kill you hardware with a sloppy fix

>>7371 Dumpster diving is a protip. The other protip is doing that in places where rich enough people live or areas where a lot of ThinkPads is being used.
Terzibashjian · 2021-09-24 01:25
>>6520 protip: never cut the wires so close to the connector, because now the connector is useless. If you left yourself even an inch, you could have attached the wires again.
