Pizza Laptop

Yeoja Aideul · 2021-02-02 04:29
I was looking at my old pictures folder then I saw this pizza box/laptop thing. Is it possible to create a portable pizza computer for security reasons. All I need is a raspberry pi and etc. I've never done this kind of do it yourself from scratch so if anybody know some resources it would help me out thanks.
Guthrie · 2021-02-02 04:38
yes, just buy the parts and ziptie them to box. on hackaday and elsewhere there's hundreds of project descriptions of cyberpunk decks done with rpi as a base, and they are all just lego plug and play. if you're systematic: make a list, check it twice, etc. then it's no more complicated than assembling an ikea. fwiw raspberry pi is _not_ secure. it comes with a bunch of binary blobs for full operation, their flash drive is notoriously unreliable, and they lack ECC memory (in hardware error checks). the flash has gotten better with rpi4, but it's still nowhere near even laptop sata quality. on the picture the laptop is made out of actual laptop guts. rpi are well marketed toys, that you can use as an amateur hacking project base, not any kind of serious bsns.

I want to make a similar project. I have an old laptop that gave some good years, then past some time and it went to fail and overheat. I want to take off all its parts and put them into a new frame like me the pic related. I have to design a new frame that allows a good cooling for the machine and change de hdd to a new ssd
Yeoja Aideul · 2021-02-03 10:22
>>6173 So basically rpi's aren't secure and actual laptops parts are needed. How is the air flow part viable?
Hacker · 2021-02-16 00:58
If you can build a desktop, then you can build a cyberdeck. Airflow is not a factor with the passive heatsinks of SBCs. Just pick an SBC and add components to it. Use a power bank as battery. Don't use a Raspberry Pi if you want free drivers only, use a Rock Pi 4 or BeagleV for RISC-V.
Mentat · 2021-02-16 14:37
>>6355 Are pine64 SBCs any good?
William Holtzer · 2021-02-17 03:05
>>6363 Pine64 is decent, active community effort to develop free drivers. You can always swap the SBC later to upgrade the cyberdeck.
Yeoja Aideul · 2021-02-19 08:38
>>6355 Isn't that overkill? I just want a computer that can be disguised as a pizza box.
Switch · 2021-02-21 03:09
>>6378 Use the same components, but change the case.
Yeoja Aideul · 2021-02-21 16:35
>>6396 I mean it defeats the point of this thread. I said I want to build a Pizza computer not a cyberdeck or some weird terminology for nichr computers.
Emmanuel · 2021-02-21 17:32
pizza desktop > pizza laptop
William Holtzer · 2021-02-23 22:27
>>6172 I mean if you take the guts out of any laptop you can probabky just stick them into anything.

>>6434 Remove the heating element and you've got one hell of a microatx case.
Roger Pollack · 2021-03-13 10:37
>>6455 Why would you go do such a thing. You have computing and fried chicken, a perfect combo why ruin it.
William Holtzer · 2021-03-13 19:16
>>6455 didn't read lol
Ivan Petrov · 2021-03-15 03:26
>>6455 It uses the console's heat waste to keep chicken hot iirc, the fans blow into the heating compartment,so there's no heating component to remove
Yeoja Aideul · 2021-05-01 13:24
>>6172 I have given up. It just doesn't seem to be real in terms of functioning.
Lady Jessica · 2021-05-03 13:15
>>6728 it's just parts and airflow; figure it out. do you want your hand held the whole way?
Junichi Fujiwara · 2021-09-29 05:15
>>6355 What exactly defines a cyberdeck? Purely just the aesthetics? Why do they all have an off centre screen?
Unknown · 2021-09-29 05:48
>>7433 Cyberdecks follow that retrofuturistic design concept of a compact personal computer that was popularized among the cyberpunk community. It's basically an outdated idea of how a laptop looks like. Same thing as with flying cars from the 1950s, they look quite different than the actual flying vehicles that are being designed and built nowadays. >>6735 NTA but, how can I accomplish cooling for a moderately dated Compaq CQ 60 laptop (2009)? It heats up despite active cooling, and the fan gets really loud, which wouldn't even heat my windings if I wouldn't have to use it in public. It's not very stealthy. Thanks in advance.
Zhora · 2021-09-29 05:57
>>7434 I figured. Would be cooler with dual screens.
Armitage · 2021-09-29 09:09
>>6172 The image you posted? It's literally a gutted laptop stuffed into a pizza box. I saved it and will look upon it lovingly, but it's not really a piece of craftsmanship. Neither is a raspberry pi, but if you wanted to make such a thing you'd just need the pi, a big fat USB battery pack, a usb keyboard with trackpad or w/e, and then for the screen go on ebay and look up one of these: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=lcd+driver+hdmi And get a repair LCD panel that matches the model specified.
Nguoi La · 2021-09-29 09:11
>>7435 >>7436 If you want dual screens get a pi4 and two of the HDMI LCD drivers I posted above. And if you want something that doesn't suck ass, you can go to simplynuc and get a real processor in a slightly larger package. It will be intelcuсked though
Demeere · 2021-09-30 01:02
>>7434 have you tried putting in new thermal paste and blowing out all the dust?
Nell · 2021-09-30 05:20
>>7439 Literally did that. Took apart the whole thing, blew through with compressed air, applied thermal paste cuz I was at it.
Dox · 2021-09-30 06:52
>>6172 i rember asa teenager making a """laptop""" out of a raspberry pi, lcd module from adafruit and a rc car batery jank but pretty easlity doable, though for the price of components you could just buy a non-meme netbook
Just another Random Lainon · 2021-09-30 10:14
>>6177 A cheap desk computer out of past gen laptop motherboards sounds like a great topic to discuss instead of raspberry pizzas. Is there a knowledge base or community that does these mods, what are the most popular candidates? Main issue besides fiddling a power button out of keyboard pinout is same old laptop cooling system and subpar fan, how hard would it be to add a completely passive heat sink or blow-through heat sink but with bigger quiet fan? Even All-inOne form as pictured is not that bad when motherboard eDP connector supports 2160p 17.3 inch panels, you mount the whole thing on a swivel VESA arm and use it as regular display.
William Holtzer · 2021-10-01 04:27
>>6177 A mesh case would be better than two sheets of plexiglass because it would cover it more from accidentally being touched and I imagine plexiglass builds up static and if the mesh is metal it will shield EMFs. A fan may not necessarily be needed anymore because the heat will push the floating dust away and the heat has more area to escape.

>>7447 Oh hey it's that one DIY channel that made a "breathing" fan. In his most recent videos he took a full tower rig kind of setup and cramped it into a suitcase-like format with a screen w/ space to put peripherals in it. It looks super cool and I'm fantasizing about making a computer just like the one he did. I would probably leave out the speakers. Not a fan of built-in speakers. but the rest is pretty fantastic. link for reference : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSJZ7MtKe1w

>>6172 i like the concept, funny piece. when you say security reasons, are you intending to disguise it while you walk around in public with a pizza box? i would be very confused if someone was walking around a store or something with a pizza box haha i'd also recommend getting a much smaller box so it's easier to carry around and the cardboard won't bend as much
Leto Atreides I · 2022-06-06 07:13
If you are smuggling a computer you could just put a laptop in the box.
Terzibashjian · 2022-06-21 17:01
>>6173 I'm an embedded dev and there are loads of products that use raspberry pis They're usually not super well-suited for any particular work, but they usually err on the side of being overkill and excessive I have no idea about the specs they got or what, but they're not just toys
Pulse · 2022-06-21 23:52
Agreed that itvwould be far smarter to either put a laptop inside a pizza box for better sturdiness, power, and probably battery life or build something much smaller for better concealment. Far better to pull an unseen raspberry pi enclosure out of a pocket or small bag (that a normal person wouldn't think a computer could fit in AND wouldn't think is weird to have) than be noticed walking into the server room or onto the roof with a pizza box. And if you somehow know a pizza box won't be out of place, far better to save the time of construction and risk that a wrong bump breaks an exposed part and just use a laptop.
