Henlo friendly Lains,
christmas hollidays are almost here and i decided to buy a nice pc game (planet zoo) and have a little break from all the terminals and shell scripts
unfortunately that requires that i install windows :/
so i installed xp and 7 on some drive but i dont really want them to be connected to the wired all the time
but i am lazy so i added this little switch to my network card between the orange wire (TX-) and the card
it seems to work, but i loose connection every 3-5 minutes for a short period of time when it should be on
im not exactly good with electronics and i dont get why it works a while and then looses connection
any lain with a degree has an idea?

Hello fren, might want to post a not so blurry closeup. I would say that it might be something with the length of wire causing interference at worst, or the switch being loose at best?
I mostly deal with DC and large machines, so not really good with cards. With the length of wire, there might be some kind of interference. Also reminder that more wire = more resistance.
How is the wire attached? It looks like hot glue in the pic. Also how loose is the switch? You should have solid contact between the wires and the switch, and those plug in switches might come loose or have bad connections. Best option is to solidly affix the switch to the wire. If permanent, solder it. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area, and do it right. IIRC you can check the catalog and there used to be a thread on soldering.

You're messing up the length/impedance of a balanced twisted pair transmission line. That, combined with the card being a piece of crap is probably causing all sorts of mayhem. I bet the poor thing can't even negotiate a gigabit connection when it's working.
Also, please don't make a new thread for asking a single question. Use >>/tech/36474 next time.
>Discussion of computer working or electrical design and modification may be considered more appropriate on /Ω/ or /λ/; a thread in each or any of these boards for this is reasonable and allowed.

>>5774 Have you tried running the game via Wine or Proton? There's an install script for the game on Lutris using proton but it's a draft so not 100% that it works.

Indeed
Undo all that soykaf you did to the NIC, then take an ethernet cable, remove the outer sheath at a section that lines up with where you want to position the switch, then cut the wire and splice in your switch. You want the tx+ and tx- wires to be close together and of similar length, so running one of them up to the switch and then back down is not ideal. I assume you are doing 100M so it isn't as picky as faster speeds, but it wouldn't surprise me if that is causing your issues.
