So i own an oculus quest. Is there anything cool i can do with it? So far all ive done is sidequest and linking it to my desktop
Case · 2020-04-23 21:14
Hook it up to a 3D camera fred and try and do tasks from a second person perspective. Unless you have some sort of dissociative disorder in which this would aggrivate it. You can go an extra step if you have a second unit, a second 3D camera and a friend. Have the camera mounted where each of your normal views would be and view eachother's video feed while doing thesame actions as eachother. Would help if you had two other friends touch you in same spots at the same time such as run a feather across you. This if done right I think in theory it will give you the sensation of being body swapped.

I’m working on trying to root it. Ideally a bootrom exploit would be best - so far not much progress. Checkout phonesploit - it has some interesting utilities that can read various information off the device.

>people that bought the rift have to root it
I knew that the government owned facebook buying it was bad and all but are literally oculus rifts just another 'cellphone' tracking device that wants to see through your very eyes or what?
Abhorrent.

I guess if you have the programming know-how you could write something that abstracts file trees/directories into 3d virtual environments with each file appearing as its own separate object within a virtual room? or have a directory as a small tower, with each file being a certain part of the tower at a certain height in a room full of other towers representing other directories?
Then just tie in a bunch of gestures to different scripts so if you press the right config of buttons while your hand is in a certain position, you could alias those gesture/button combinations to specific scripts to run.
Something along those lines could make for a more intuitive UI I think, you'd just need to figure out the best virtual representation of computer processes. After all, 3 dimensions isn't even the limit in VR.

Just introducing lag between a mounted camera on yourself and the display is quite the experience. Breaks absolutely your coordination.

I think super mario 64 style wall mounted paintings for dir&files would be efficient. You can make it a cylinder room and set yourself at the center so all files are displayed equally. Looking arround would be efficient. Transition is then jumping into the selected painting and landing in the next room. Could have in addition symbolic things like color-coded frame indicating file size.

perhaps. That definitely sounds like an interesting idea. Though I wonder how virtual 4-dimensional space might be used? For some reason I feel like using 4-spatial dimensions would be the most efficient method of traversal within a digital space. If people could get used to it, then they might be able to access things faster than if everything was just in 3d space. Though all that is rather abstract until someone comes up with an idea on how filespace would actually work in 4-dimensions.

If you make a 4d space you will have translate 4d objects to 3d and use some slider to manipulate how 4d -> 3d is translated to be able to see all possible aspects. Here's a good example how this looks in praxis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yW--eQaA2I
I think you might get actually vertigoif the whole enviroment is changing constantly in vr. Same for mario jumping. People react very bad with movement from what i read. Some matrix style 3d interface before the viewer might be the most robust approach to avoid problems.

navigation becomes faster in 4d space but the disadvantage is that it also becomes much more difficult for humans to use effectively.

Motion sickness from VR (sim sickness) is really only a problem for the first little while of using it, you get used to things really fast.
Jim Hilger · 2020-04-30 14:09

read some people cant handle it. I think its likely to be the same longterm issue as seasickness. Not every but some are permanently out.

That would make sens, seeing as (at least how I understand it) they're both caused by the same ocular-vestibular-ear-juice-doesnt-match-the-seeing-holes problem

this is just one representation of 4d space. actually representing transitions between locations in a 4d space is an unsolved problem in interactive media as far as i am aware.
a solution specific to the medium is best, so i think it may be possible to work around motion sickness.

Remember you are still always displaying 3d scenes. So its still a 3d transition. You could potentially do more fancy stuff interpolating between 2 translation vectors (old & new ) but since you render in 3d you can also use all the old ways gamedevs do portals/ activating special vision/ etc.

I love that we live in a timeline where this phrase exists.

To use Oculus now requires a Facebook account
Is there anyway to open up the headset and tear away facebook control while retaining most functionality

>now
new units/accounts for now, in 2 years it will be required for everyone, even existing users
yeah still a scumbag move that surprised absolutely no one, I'm getting rid of mine and switching to some alternative as soon as I can, been thinking of that even before the announcement anyways
not sure if the ability to root it would change my mind

If anyone with a new quest would like an oculus account I created two for giving away. Post a picture of your new quest with a timestamp and we can figure out how to exchange the creds somehow.
These accounts have no history, no games, and were never attached to a device.
Keep min mind if you make a facebook account and buy a game it will not come with you to the new account so if this is you, maybe you should save this for people who are more likely to use it.
If you just bought a quest and don't want to wait around for me to give you an account before you play with it, keep in mind it comes with some games, there are free demos you can download with a throwaway facebook account, you can use it to play steam games, and there is a lot of content on sidequest for you to use while you wait for me to get off my ass.

What about stuff on other VR systems? In a few months I will have a HP Reverb G2, and I am wondering what I can do with it outside of VRchat and some games.

there is literally none and zero attempts on making non harmful variant that works with free software

sell it and build your own hmd

Lain, I'm quite dismayed at this. Really? There's nothing?
fuarrrk... guess we'll need to rely on the reverse-engineering crowd helping with drivers & rooting the things.
Having to root your display interface, damn that's a disappointment.

This, and the standard it implements, looks like it could be interesting.
Donna Hawthorne · 2020-12-11 20:26
Apparently media reports of rooted oculus quests have been greatly exaggerated. I'd buy one if I could actually have control over the damn thing, officially or not. On a similar note, Monado is on it's way to working on android, so rooted phones are probably the best bet for a DIY AR HMD.

what? a VR file manager would be cool though

Anyone here have one that supports openvr?
