How can I live in a cyberpunk lifestyle today? I mean, we still don't have body implanted tech and flying cars (lol), but I'm sure we can still manage to live like this as close as possible with the available technology today. Besides the skills and clothing required for this lifestyle, what would you include in this package? I would include: reducing the amount of data that the organizations and the government has on you, deleting accounts that has any kind of personal info about you; having a good VPN service would be good too, but I'm not sure about it, maybe a private VPN; customizing your phone to keep it simple and yet useful; hoarding a lot of data (just in case). Also, I was thinking about some form of minimalism, but I'm not entirely sure how it'd be. I've been told that the sysadmin job is the best one to be closer to the cyberpunk world, but so is being a NEET. You could get brouzouf from doing some freelance jobs on the internet, just enough to pay your bills and keep yourself fed. Owning a cheap small apartament on the center of the city would help too. And that's everything I've came up so far. Everything related is welcome.

OP, just because you don't have a bunch of transistors jammed into your brain doesn't mean you're not a cyborg. You don't need anything to live a cyberpunk life because the dystopia is here. It has been for a while now. The only reason people don't recognize it is because instead of grungy brutalist megaopolises we all still live in soykafty suburbs built circa-1965. Unless you're living out in some desolate third world pit where they still haven't discovered radio you're already very much living in the cyberpunk world. You don't get a choice.

cyberpunk is low life in a high tech environment. you don't get meshed with the system holding a sysadmin job, you fight it with primitive tools and using the system garbage to get a bit of non threatening tech for yourself.

>How can I live in a cyberpunk lifestyle today? Be poor. Done. Most people in the world are already living a cyberpunk reality. Turns out it's awful. This genre was never meant to be an aesthetic to be emulated and lived for our own amusement. It's a dire warning. Just like all dystopian fiction. I don't understand why people aestheticize and fetishize it. Sure, the media is pretty cool. But how could somebody be so guileless as to believe they'd want to live in such a world? It is and will continue to be utter torture. We seem to have used this fiction and media as an instruction manual when we should have heeded its prognostications and changed course when it was still possible to do so.

I live in a pseudo-cyberpunk lyfestile. It isn't really all that great. >failing server, but still runs >ancient macbook (early early early 2010s) >old gentoo desktop (don't knock it, it runs great, easy to use/administer) >hodgepodge network of stolen equipment >first gen, second edition RaspPIs for fun >poor af I live by *nix, and honestly that's the comfy part. The uncomfy part is finding money for food. Everything else is a luxury. If you want to live this way, go to university and don't save any money before hand. Live off the system. All the other cruft about "living off the grid" is the easy part, the hard part is staying alive.

Some are seeing it as a grounds to a social credit score type of situation with consequences to freedom of movement and whatnot. Unless you're extremely interested in and good with computing technology and the like, a "cyberpunk" life would be hellish. A lot of cyberpunk fiction is made with the intent to show the potential consequences of such an environment, and most people would not enjoy such a thing. I guess the most you could do in a positive way is to cautiously use such technology to enrich your life as much as possible.

I just want to say we are pre-cyberpunk. I have witnessed the extent of the US military's scientific knowledge. We aren't there yet. China's ideology and pursuits are dystopia yeah, but in general we are barely floating above the discoveries of Gauss and Abel. Despite the works toward explaining Fermat and Riemann we really are distinctively behind what is to be expected of humanity. Cyberpunk is not an idea of our lifetime but an ideal of a past lifetime. Humanity is disgusting and impure, we will not develop beyond our current limitations before the next major societal reversal. Gravity waves is the last major discovery of proof, until God permits us we shall struggle in the dirt and the slime waiting for his clarity. I pray we see the formula of the primes but alas we are unworthy. I really genuinely hope we progress in my lifetime because what I am seeing is nothing more than dirt. I hope you all pursue the truth in the same way I do, I am so alone, to be human is a curse. Females really are nothing but against that which is good an d and progress. I swear I've had teachers draw this out on the board to give an entire class permanent brain-damage. Any political theory that doesn't deal with the specifics of what the laws is, how it will be enforced or who will benefit from is political brainwashing. For example, telecoms: they use all sorts of laws to prevent competition from startups, municipal services, or just individuals setting up their own mesh. But they don't champion regulation. Oh no, they openly champion and sponsor free market politicians. They kept lobbying to not be classified as a public utility, repeal net-neutrality, repeal privacy protections, and are now lobbying to let them sell your data to credit companies. All that in the name of the freemarket. Abolishing pole, access laws and allowing personal telecom networks is "less government" but is to our benefit at the detriment of the government and corporations. At the same time privacy protections, or just breaking up big cooporations is "more government" but is still to our benefit ant the cost of both the government and corporations. Anyone repeating the "more vs less government" framing should be actively and aggressively combatted for they are serving the interests of both the government and corporations.

>>4312 >ancient >2010ish ................ I used a windows 98 computer back in 2009 myself and use a 2009ish win7 computer now. *checks* yes, 2009, dell latitude 2100. it is my most fav computer that I use more than other devices. I got it for 68 usd a year or two ago, before that I was using a b130 dell inspiron from farther back than that to the point it's from that gray/black tank computer style. Like 2005ish? I don't know, but older ram in any case, more primitive BIOS, naturally glare resistant where in contrast this netbook 2100 lat is trying to be glare resistant, of which is of it's nicest feature. Both have a ruggedness to them. I also, due to being a neet, bought a pi zero and want to learn how to use picore with it, basically the dsl (damn small linux) for the raspberry pi's. I have a very old computer, pent 3 I think in the closet I bought for like 12 usd, it has alike a ghz point 2, as in 1.2ish ghz, processor, winxp, I may put tinycore on that, it's fully loaded distro so I can finally learn how good it might be, because as it is I've not got the pi zero working right, but the tower, thing weighs literally 35ish lbs, would work I think. I just threw away a crt, that's another part of this blog post, it was damaged and only showing black and white, but what was curious to me is that the tv crt had a celeron intel sticker on it. I decided to trash it anyway, now I have hardly a crt left these days. I plan on buying a drone headset and hooking a pi 3 or 4 into it to use it as a 'vr' headset for anything the pi wants to output with it's composit out, then trash the zero eventually if it never becomes a glorified mp4 player using picore. I wanted to read books and have midi files on the picore, maybe tetris. That's all. But anyway, my life is a cyberpunk dystopia indeed. Oh, the waveshare I have for the zero is a pirated waveshare and is now no longer sold by amazon, it is said to only get 15fps. Another reason I abandoned lakka or retropie as an option for it, though playing rpgs on it could be a thing. It's bad though, zero for even snes a bit. Missing screens, slow on gba games I tried, etc. Meandering apology goes here. But I think if I don't get the 200ish kit in total for the headset of a pi, when you include it all it's be 197 for many periferals, I'll get a coolbaby console or something to add to my cheap android phones that I feel cringey using. Coolbaby looks aesthetic and can kinda do n64 as well as my old win9x could have in 2009, probably better, I can live with it X3 Image of it, it has shoulder buttons, just two, and even normal usb's for my old devices to plug into the android device. And android 5 is it's version, better than 4.4, and beyond 5 is just bloat for androids me thinks, so though people bitch about the coolbaby (and I hate that glowing logo so much myself) I think it's a good choice for my cyber lifestyle/fetish. In retrospect, i should not have wasted peripherals and all on a price gouged pi zero and got a pocketchip, but back then amazon didn't have one, and they no longer do now. Those have a debian with a gui, I think I could have had a really cool glorified mp4 out of that and got an nes to run on it for tetris and such. But rip, it's no longer anywhere, but was 80ish usd this time last year if I recall on amazon, though is now gone. That would have been more cyber. When I learned about pocketgo I realized it was soykaf and all and would be hard to use but I also learned about it by doing research that actually led me to lainchan talking about it before they went out of business. It's fun for me to reminisce about. Or would have been had I got one. I need something other than the old computers, the cheap android devices, at least some android console or linux gaming console, but there's soooo many. Maybe I should do the drone headset method. More parts, more things to repair, more alterable, and it'd be the most cyber. Everything can be blocked out and just keep the Internet on your face, or put lakka sd in (assuming not dual booting an sd to death) and play games on your face, nes-n64ish, wouldn't that be ideal? And they don't weigh a lot either, but I wish it were a helmet. I hate those straps. I would like to bump it up ideally to over 200ish usd to include an actual 3d printed helmet for it so it can lay off the nose. Also it could contain the wires hanging all around your head ideally..... /meander

Cyberpunk style definition is very subjective. I don't claim that my view is in any way more universal than others in this thread but here is a few things that I consider cyberpunkish > Proficient in thechonology – knowing how to code at least > System exploitation – bending rules for your own benefit > Being independent – unemployment, rejection of mass media, using money as a tool to acomplish things and not to raise ones social status > Privacy – staying out of goverment/corporational radar > Punky appearance – weird clothes taste, like gothninja soykaf, dyed hair, piercing, maybe even tattos (cyberpunk aesthethic) > Body modification – usage of exogenous hormones or plastic surgeries

Drone headsets seem to have composit in, the 3.5mm kind that pi's seem to be able to output. I'd put lakka and raspbian on it and if all you need to do is alter the config file then it'd output to the composit lcd inside the drone headset, assuming drones only have one eye and not two that is. Otherwise you'd be making a visor and end up just drilling a big hole in one eye, of which is actually, again, though soykafty, cyber still. You can drive while you game! Paint it black, etc. Play lakka and raspbian, never take it off, put a camera on the outside, only dreams now, etc.

>>5863 >privacy >punky appearance Aren't these contradictory? If you're trying to keep private, you shouldn't call attention to yourself. It's unfortunate how many things automatically attract attention - people see red flags when you tell them you don't use social media, for instance - but I'd think one would want to minimize that as much as possible. Of course you *should* stay private as possible, like encrypt your data, avoid megacorps, etc., but don't you think it starts at making yourself as least suspicious as possible? Similar to how metadata leaks can compromise your entire privacy setup, your appearance and personality can set off alarm bells in people who are looking to investigate your actions. 'Hacker' laptop stickers confuse me in the same way...
Lady Jessica · 2021-05-21 12:40
>>5918 Yes and no. While lack of privacy is a social problem that must be fought by keeping certain practices, punky soykaf is also a manner of fighting social "unfairness" in a way. Maybe a distopian "memory" reaches the mind and makes some people think being punked is some common street subculture, but they forget is was like in the 80s or 90s. Being a punk hacker would work in such context, where you walk with a bunch of "drunk losers" dwelling in dirty alleys that deserves little attention in an urban middle. Nowadays, soykaf is just about fashion and style, so it would attract attention, since it's anachronystic and different from today's insipid standards. Let's say the best way to be private is pretending not to care about privacy, void of any style that looks like dressing from an age where style was fun, listening to soykaf music and never complaining about progress.

>>4661 >However corporate lobbyists are pushing anti free market reforms. Like for example software patents. Good that such attempts have failed in EU and we have no software patent laws here. Calling those "anti free market" is utterly absurd because the people who keep software patents in the US would call also call repealing those "anti free market". Calling any policy pro or anti Free Market is frankly a meaningless concept that everyone bends to their material interest. What's really at stake here is whether or not something should be claimable as private property and the default answer in any capitalist society is "YES". You might think that's not capitalist or "anti free market" because it requires government enforcement but so does copy-rights, mineral-rights, land deeds, trademarks, contracts, stocks, literally any form of private property is backed by the government. If you don't like that then you're not a capitalist but some sort of anarcho-socialist or mutualist.
Netrunner · 2021-08-19 11:28
>>7280 ah, but what if we got rid of the government and everyone protected their own private property and agreed to protect each others'??? surely that would not lead to a significant change in the meaning and execution of private property, it would be the exact same just with more freedom!

>>7283 How does everyone agree who owns what? Where do the land property lines get drawn? Is intellectual property a thing still? Should there be things that shouldn't be claimed as private property like parks or sewer systems? Its only utpoian in theory but in practice most people won't go along with it. Tenants aren't going to respect the property rights of a landlord and you can't blame them for defending their home. The only way for everyone to respect everyone else's property rights is if there's a lot more collective ownership going around. You'll end up with something more like syndicalism or market socialism than capitalism.

This is so devoid of understanding of how power works. What is the mechanism that drives this? What motivates people to do these things in large enough number, against history, and how would that thing not be another state? This won't work. You have to start with power, because power is all there is. And power will always be in our heads, even if we destroyed all currently existing power. We can't run and hide—we have to learn to live WITH power.

Anarchists only ever accomplish the opposite of what the set out to do. They are pitiable pawns of the power elite. Bumbling suckers. Punk is a joke. Seen a punk house post-2012 or so? Just a bunch of excommunication, rape allegations, and gestapo tactics. And endless dick-sucking of the status quo. They are even more conformist now than the general population. They love to listen to the experts. They love to manipulate others into doing so as well. Has punk died? Yes. Many times, and it still keeps resurrecting. But it should have stayed dead. The bitter truth is that fash punks in the 70s were the better side of punk this whole time.

>>4304 I don't think cyberpunk is as much about a lifestyle as worldbuilding. Our world isn't too different from the worlds in lots of cyberpunk media. Certain tech is less advanced or more advanced than those in fiction depending on which story you're talking about but I can see a lot of the themes predicted in these works being played out today. Robocop -- there is large amounts of high-tech military grade police equipment used to control the population. We don't have metal men patrolling the streets (yet) but a lot of the stuff cops use today they could hardly dream of using back in the 80s, soykaf like tazer shields and giant riot control tanks. Blade runner -- we don't have tons of flying cop cars but small-scale flying vehicles are definitely a thing. And like in the world of blade runner they are only for the wealthy and powerful. If we did have mass-produced flying cars that could park on the street they would be for millionaire playboys and cops, not for us. And we wouldn't be all soyboy starry-eyed about their presence. For other themes... people are obsessed with digital entertainment, we spend a huge amount of time just consuming stuff from a screen. Look at vtubers and vocaloids, people rig themselves to 3D models of anime girls and stream themselves playing games online, and they flock to concerts where an anime girl is performing on a stage using a big screen. This stuff could come straight out of a Gibson novel.

Their anti-system attitude is shallow at best and being a freakshow is not helpful. Punks are just low IQ substance abusers (not necessarily hard drugs). They are outdated. The punk philosophy is good, but don't get fooled by the people who worship the packaging. Just join a local CCC chapter and be aware that those people there are bootlickers who care mostly about pronouns, but at least it gets closest to the "cyber" aspect.

After watching https://youtube.com/watch?v=aUMNOnT7hgc and reading all the positive comments, I am honestly frightened. The title is bait, it's not really a city with no cars, what would have been much more interesting to put into the title would be the fact that this city is in effect a district for the sake of a single corporation mainly, tencent. Looking at the way all of it is designed (or at least narrated), I cannot imagine living a fulfilling life. That's the most optimal possible way of being just a cog in a big machine, I would seriously be frightened by suicidal thoughts living in a system like that. Here's to hoping china doesn't show the world the recipe for human domestication. Anyone who wants to subject themselves to "cyberpunk" should consider living there so I don't have to.

In that regard it makes sense that people secretly want to be resistance members, criminals, cyberpunk cops, etc. that are all thematic of the genre. Turns out none of the "cyberpunk media" accurately portrayed a dystopia, because human nature was allowed to run free regardless of all the fictional civilization's failings. We're living in the "boring cyberpunk dystopia." Basically the same as the cyberpunk media, but without the cool lights and our souls are crushed rather than invigorated.

The original characters in cyberpunk, heroes or anti-heroes, were against the grain of their fictional realities, whether they had altruistic or criminal intentions, or both. Even the ones centered around police heroes show them either directly resisting or going under the radar of the corrupt system they were employed by. Cyberpunk is neither a utopia nor a dystopia but a heterotopia.
