Home automation
Crash Override · 2019-11-30 20:27
Hi all,
Any of you doing any home automation?
I don't have any tech question per se, just wandering what and how you are doing this.
My simple test setup is currently a Rpi3B+ running hass.io. I have an esp32 with a local DHT22 for temperature reading, but I'm also connecting to a xiaomi mi (not in the picture) with bluetooth over the esp32 for that.
The lights control is currently a philips hue, but I'm going to take out the hub and change it to a conbee II zigbee controller. I don't like a philips hub phoning home, and prefer to keep the data local.
My biggest issue atm is finding a decent remote for controlling lights. The philips one works ok, but is imho kind of limited. There are a lot of options to turn a phone or tablet into a remote, but I think the screen is a distraction > one should be able to 'control' a remote by feel only.
Curious about your insights/finding.

Make sure you think of cooling anon. The raspberry pi heats up depending on what your doing with it. Used mine as a retropie and it started to have overheating issues. Make sure you cool it no matter what your doing with it.

Thanks for your response, currently the board does not have a cooler, I ordered one from our chinese friends but it hasn't arrived yet.
the board you're seeing was running retropie, some time ago but now I have a Rpi4 with 4GB for that, still waiting to set that up. I already have the cooling for that, it's a pimori (shim + enclosure)

It's not smart if you're doing all the work. What advantages does all your stuff has over analog thermometer and dimmer light switch? Stop inventing problems.

Well greatest advantage is that I get to have fun with it, I don't call it work

Yeah, I kind of agree that smart home ѕһіt is something nobody needs and it's a kind of neurotic obsessive geekery and techno-fetishism. Which is fine if you're just doing it in the privacy of your own home, locally contained on a pi or something... but outside of that it's becoming a big market and a data-scraping hellscape. And now you can't buy a TV without fuarrrking alexa and a bunch of other soykafware bloat in it. I'll never buy another TV, I just buy large computer monitors and nail those to the wall. And instead of Roku or some other pile of actual fuсking dogѕһіt I'll just plug a real computer into it with an HDMI cable. Kind of like what a lot of pi projects do, but they usually try to mimic Roku and therefore make it much more terrible.
It's kind of a big forced meme. Nobody actually wants a wifi-connected toaster or a lightbulb that you control with your cell phone. We just see it and buy it 'cause most of us are consumer whores, but nobody ever actually had a need for it.

Totally agree on that, that's why I'm running it on a pi.
> I'll never buy another TV, I just buy large computer monitors and nail those to the wall.
I don't use the smart function of my tv's, they have it, but I don't connect them to the network. I have my pc with 2 tv's and a monitor connected to it. Works way better then that what my tv can, and at least my OS respects my privacy.
But I still want to monitor stuff like temperature, or control a led strip for mood lighting. Detect motion when I'm not home etc. without those things sending that data over to big corp.
The pi also has a pi-hole running on it, so I'm already blocking the philips hub from phoning home

Even this may not be enough, if there's unsecured access points within range and the TV is designed to latch on to any open wifi.

Ive been trying to use osmc/kodi as a sort of htpc thing because thats seemingly "the thing to do" but I usually just ssh in from my laptop to play music or whatever for this exact reason. the more kodi apes roku the more annoying it is to use. I just got a new raspberry pi 4 and im just going with stock raspbian this time.

I've never used kodi or any of that. I'm not sure how it works. It's like an iptv thing? I was just using minidlna to stream videos to my tv and it worked pretty well.

A friend of mine watched on my house while I was away for a few days and when I had returned he left a used smart assistant with a note that said
>enjoy your new spyware : ^ )
That is the most automation I have, it still sits in a corner unplugged, and I thought about giving it away, but I am from time to time tempt to do some kind of project with it.
I used to have a rudimentary timer tied to some lights and my router so that my house would go off the grid when I was not there (that was probably dumb, because my network painted a very good picture of when I was at home).

It's a multimedia player operating system. It can play from disk, play from a network share, from an IP stream, even from a cable modem I think. However for some reason there's this weird gray market of people who sell raspberry pis with kodi installed and a bunch of pirate IPTV channels already set up (I guess because people are too retarded to plug some URLs into a menu themselves?). Anyway for normal people that's generally what they mean when they say "Kodi box". It's actually to the point where some dumbass copyright firms have tried lobbying to have them outlawed despite the fact that they're just media players.

Kodi isnt an os. There just are some distros that are raspbian that boot into kodi as a DE.
Allegedly there's a black market of kodi plugins that point to torrent streaming services.
SHODAN · 2020-08-24 23:18
Anyways, I've had a few smart plugs and led lights. The plugs were useful because the apt I rented had poor light switch placement and color changing lights are cyber.
That said I especially didnt like the "automagic" setup of these things - Sign into some properitery app give it your location then your wireless password. Since most of these devices are fairly simple they should be easy to make a Foss version of, but that step I don't know how to replace.

Ah, right. I got kodi and osmc confused.
