So I've been working on a project, trying to make a somewhat vintage
yet custom setup.
The OS on the pi parrot ARM which only boots into TUI so I thought
it would be perfect and I'm using an old burle BNC monitor.
only issue right now is that the pi display won't show up on the
monitor.
>HDMI to RCA adapter #doesn't work at all
>RCA to BNC adapter #works
thinking I might need a converter box but I'm not tech savvy so I
have no clue.
BTW how does it look?

fuarrrking badass lain
judging by the image you are using a rpi 2 or 3, though I don't think it makes a big difference. Apparently, and I only just investigated it because of this thread, the raspberry had this well kept secret that is it's TRRS port. This just means it has a 4-channel auxiliary port. One of the contacts is for ground, two for left/right stereo and the last, you might have guessed it, composite video! You can make your own RCA cable with functioning video soldering a breakout cable from AUX to RCA, or you can just buy one, in which case you should worry about getting a cable with the correct pin-out. Oh yeah, all Pis still have composite video for some reason. Even the Zeros—it's on that little four-pin square header to the right and below the GPIO. Kind of love it exactly for this purpose.
Wonder what was up with that HDMI-composite converter box? I've had pretty good luck with those. Bought three over the years for different art installations, all three worked like a charm and continue to do so. Also have a couple RF video modulators for getting video from a modern computer to a TV set that's so old it just has antenna inputs, and those work fine too. In fact, they work so well you don't have to plug them in! The image just kind of jumps a few feet across the room, like a miniature analog TV station. Which is exactly what it is. Kinda neat.
Maybe it was a resolution issue? Sometimes the converter boxes can scale HD input down to NTSC size, sometimes they just choke and you have to set an absurdly retro resolution on your client to match. Or was it set to PAL instead of NTSC? Usually there's a little switch. But in any case I guess you don't need the converter box anymore.

Excellent. By the way, is that a monochrome tube? Or color?
Love an old mono tube as a CLI.

monochrome white, blue or green would have been perfect but this was just laying around not being used.
Batou · 2019-08-27 13:21
This looks cool as fuarrrk.

the headless parrot OS is missing a few files for internet access.
it has eth0,lo and i had added a usb0 ssh script but has no wifi0/wlan0 files and when I try to add them they show up.

Naw, that's a beaut of an old tube. I love the curvature and gloss and the color of the inactive phosphor, nice and dark. Some of the older ones were very bright when turned off. Just lying around huh? Got any more? :)
You can always just change the terminal colors to emulate a color phosphor. But I'm jelly of that CRT. It's gorgeous, that's my like favorite era of old tube displays to be honest.

Ok so i need help. i bought some cheap amazon cables a while back and i got a picture on my crt tv but the sound in emulations was soykaf. then a few days later i tried it again and no sound. idk if i used the wrong cables and it fuarrrked up the jack or if its something on the software end. i ended up buying some zune cables to no avail. anyone know how to solve this? the hdmi port works just fine.

rpi use for video output the last pole that camcorders "3,5mm av jacks" use for ground, you have to get a jack with the poles in the right order, and obviously edit the config.txt
If the hdmi got video the analog output don't, so you have to choose one or another in the config.txt

And install and get alsa right, for audio you have to specify that in the config file too, i think is audio dt param, something like that
