Have any lainons ever published a book? I've always wanted to but never look into it really out of fear of the difficulties.

Not me--I've always thought it would be an interesting challenge and a lot of work, and I've worked on a couple little manuscripts for a novel called 80 MPH and another that I don't have a name for.
But I suck way too much to actually get published aside from perhaps vanity publishing lol. It's alright, it's a lot of fun anyway. Still really scattered--I need to get better at building up a skeleton of the story, organization, and planning.

I'm doing a children's book series on Amazon. It's pretty hard yeah.

...yet still easier than at any point in history. If I were to do it I'd just make a pdf and tell people to print off their own copy.

That's good on you. Is it enjoyable?

What's the book about?

Well the actual publishing and distribution of a children's book is the easy part. I'm commissioning art and authorship and merchandise, and it's a new character that we've filed a copyright for. It's fun, but my artists are all kids and they have exams and personal lives. It's pretty fun yeah.

A friend of a friend had writen a book and printed it out (real cover and everything, a few dozens copies) and then gave them to his friends for free.
My grandfather with his friends had selfpublished a book about there home town and there memories from the times they ware growing up (they had a ghostwriter that helped them create it). They put more money in it then they got back but you could buy there book in some local bookshops (the scale was small, I think they printed about 200-300 copies of it). Besides they didn't do it for the money, they just wanted to preserve there memories.
You could also publish a book in a digital form only. Then you wouldn't really need a publisher, as there wouldn't be a cost of printing involved in it.
If your really want to publish a book you should firstly write the book, and then worry about how to publish it.

Amazon does ISBN for free, but you can't do hardcover. I'm putting mine out for $1.99.

It's an allegory about middle-aged self-imposed loneliness and suicide that presents itself as one of those cliche "road trip of adolescent self-discovery" stories instead of telling it literally as a personal tragedy suffered in isolation.
Trying to aim for it to be funny and engaging to read instead of depressing and pretentious. Probably not actually very fun read after all though, ahaha.

That's cool. How much does it cost?

If you ever put it out, you should post it here, if you're not too worried about revealing that much information. I'd be happy to read it, it sounds like a pretty cool concept.

Tips on how to build a fanbase as a writer/artist?

I think in the end it will cost me about $1000 for two books and a merch pack with stickers, toys, posters, wrapping paper, treatments for the books as picture dictionaries, vocabulary books, translations into other languages, etc. I'm making it for my nieces for Christmas.
I haven't even redlined the art yet, this is like the pre-first draft of one of the two books... https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VfazuJXMFIOfZOXqiGITABSp_xo4fpXi/view?usp=drivesdk
