aquiring components
Lady 3Jane.. · 2019-06-18 14:52
How do you get the components in <<low life>> to build the <<high tech>>? All online stores require massive amounts of personal info to sign up+ship, let alone that you have to use a bank account which has a massive paper trail.
I've tried desoldering components from dumpster-dived electronics, but the yield is painfully low, lots of stuff is SMT and packages where my iron can't reach. 2nd hand stores have much better recyclable stuff than my local dumpsters in this regard.
Kind of hitting a wall hear.
So where do y'all get your components from?
Void · 2019-06-18 15:08
I just deal with having too many parts flying around because i need 5 and the package was 100. Some things have good yield desoldered. Oversized caps are for example not a problem unless you want to use them as a filter and getting them out is easy too.

Simple personal electronics projects. E.g Making my coffeepot and microwave remote-controlled, maybe a jammer to test my wifi with, experiments for wearable computing, IR collars to troll surveillance cams, connecting a keyboard to my e-reader...
I have tons of ideas, but every time I order electronics it bugs me that I'm pushing my personal info into the ill-secured databases of megacorps.
And I know my private info is leaked by those pigs because several times I've seen spam on my doormat with the markers I left in my info.
Drano · 2019-09-01 16:18
I get them mostly from ebay, even though the highly specific stuff isn't there (or it is only mentioned by part number instead of real terminology) I still find it to be the easiest way for me.
I got a friend on university that uses his uni funds to get things cheap on mouser or digikey, but that's it actually.
Armitage · 2019-09-01 17:27
>>3503
Same. If my needs are more general, ebay. If my needs are very specific, digikey. Takes a minute to learn how to properly browse their catalog.
Afraid you can't really get stuff without getting some bit of your info crammed through the surveillance machine OP, unless you have a strangely well-stocked Fry's nearby or like order to a PO box or your neighbor's house and grab it out of their mail surreptitiously when it arrives. This is just the stupid dystopia we've made for ourselves.
BloodCat · 2019-09-01 17:31
>>3504
And another idea is that if you have a place of work that seems down and isn't a massive corporation you could ask if they're cool with having some of your stuff addressed to them.
Molly Millions · 2019-09-01 19:05
>>3504
Never liked Farnells or Digikeys searching overs Mousers.
If I can change out a specific part for more general Ebay available one then I am going to do so out of convenience, even if that means buyin in bulk.
Newfren · 2019-09-01 19:43
>>3502
I always use eBay for this kind of stuff. They can't really know what you want to do with OpAmps or transistors and their knowledge about your purchase history isn't going to effect your life.
You can get an IR jammer by driving a NE555 timer/Arduino at certain frequencies. A TV kill switch would be even better(TV-B-gone) And a nodeMcu is a great wifi jammer that can mess with Surveillance cameras.
Also think about relaisboards with 433mhz controll / or WiFi on them.

I'm trying to figure out how to get things from online delivered without associating it with my money or my address. For paying you can use cash to buy a gift card and use that. But for delivering it seems harder. If something is on amazon you could use one of those lockers they have, but amazon doesn't sell many things and ebay and stuff don't have lockers like that. Even a po box means you have to bring in 2 forms of ID which is too many.
Whats the best way to do it? I suppose you could scope out abandoned houses or something like that but it doesn't seem like the best way to do it.
Emmanuel · 2019-10-05 01:41
It may not be ideal or what you're looking for, but you could use a prepaid/privacy.com card, use fake name and address and ship to either a PO box, dead drop, Amazon Locker, or a friend's house.
Dujour · 2019-10-07 19:20
I have used these tricks in the past:
1) Use a work, school or maybe university account. I had convinced one of my teachers to order small quantities of components for electronics projects via the school.
2) Alternatively, Makerspaces/Hackerspaces. Group buys, space-accounts or just asking others to order your stuff with theirs. I source my components this way, it also saves shipping costs.
On a related note, can people here recommend some appliances that contain big stepper motors and drivers to look out for when dumpster diving or scrapyard salvaging?
My current list is scanners, printers, fax machines (preferably old, buisness-oriented monsters) and CD, DVD and floppy drives (for puny motors).
Spooky · 2019-10-14 06:13

you know that PO boxes require not one but two forms of ID right? Amaon lockers would be great but you can't find many things on amazon that you can easily get on ebay. shipping to an abandoned location is risky, it might not even make it there. shipping somewhere someone lives is risky too for obvious reasons. and shipping to a friend's house just puts it on them.

I find some surprisingly good ones in old POS receipt printers. Dunno if you had already included those when you say "printers." Probably, but just in case that was overlooked.

try these stores: https://garoa.net.br/wiki/Lojas
I'm not sure if they ship to you. It's in portuguese, some may speak english if you call or email them, and most have physical stores close to where i live.
I'm in a major 3rd world megacity in the americas. We've got a whole district dedicated to components and electronics, and a thriving black market. that occurs in at least 4-5 places only at least a weekly basis.
i've found quite a few junk shops and components shops strewn about. there are hundreds electronics component stores. come visit!

Tell us more. Or are you talking about the Feirinhas da Madrugada?
Also, any tips on dumbster diving?

Awesome!
I usually buy on sundays in bixiga, though in the past two years traffic has fallen dramaticdlly. The the feira de madrugada that i regularly attend é a do paisandú.
Im an experienced dumpster diver. For me who has been a partigipant of the okupa scene since 2014, it's a lifestyle. We find all kinds of stuff, though rarely if ever have i found a cell phone.
Ive found all kinds of antiques and some good n900s de baixo do viaduto no glicério. i usually spend about R$30 per aparelho.
But a eskems seria de arrumar um connekt que fornece um fluxo regular de celulares mais modernos.
One of my ideas is to install pmos and resell these devices to people from places who dont have access to anonphones.

Interesting. The only things I see of the ocupa movement are the occasional pichos here and there. Unless the MTST is part of the movement. Then I see it everywhere. heh
>though rarely if ever have i found a cell phone
Well, it's rare to even see an old TV on regular trashs. Given their prices for the average Joe, people are more prone to try to get their electronics fixed than to trow it away like on the so called 1st world.
>Do you come here often?
I come to lurk 2 to 3 times a year.
Miho Iwakura · 2020-01-05 13:47
It's not important that your purchase is tracked, it's important who tracks it. It doesn't matter if North Korea knows, understand. Just buy from China.

Most solder, minus the high temp stuff, melts at <500F. Place in oven. Use tweezers and solder wick to remove components.

I never undertood the oven thing. What it does to the board/components?
Dreams_In_Digital · 2020-01-18 04:23

In short, it liquefies all solder on the board at once, even the stuff an iron can’t get to.

You would have to read the datasheet for the components you want to see if they can handle the heat. I don't think it would work for all components

in the USA, buy used tech from the government when they liquidate it at pennies per device. You need to go to a government facility to pick it up, but you can get 25 industial photocopy machines for $500 then resell the 10 that work for 2k each as "refurb." There are hundreds of items from satellite components to boats, to cars, trucks, and planes, to bayonets, uniforms, backpacks, radios, radars, lab equipment and thousands of other items.
The catch?
>need to be present to pick up ALL of the items you win the bid on (can be a lot).
>20 Pallets of backpacks
>need to show proof of ID/sign paperwork that components are not being bought to give to other countries (like Iran and North Korea). But why would you sell 30 desktops from 2013 to anybody anyway?
I just bring this up, because this is lainchan, and I am sure some of you might be upset giving information to the government willingly

/tech/ lurker here.
Avoid unhardened smartphones as they grant any app installed the ability to access your clipboard data without your permission.
If you copy your ideas text then any apps can phone the clipboard data into their servers. If you use ecosystem apps like KDE connect, that syncs clipboard data from phone and PC then stop using it if you have not hardened/secured your phone yet!
Most apps that are guilty to this kind of scheme are shopping apps and Chinese apps. This clipboard problem existed for years, imagine how many patent/IP anons got their ideas farmed by phone companies making big bucks out of casual spyware.

Why would something being illegal make a <<low life>> not do it, exactly? Also, if you're leaving behind a trail of metadata and other soykaf, you're pretty inept, since there's plenty of ways to get BTC without doing just that.

Aliexpress is undoubtedly the lowlife king of the hightech world. Whats wrong with letting your dear friend chang know youre buying capacitors? In our current irl dystopia you have to be pragmatic, and sometimes the only way to get what you want is to give up personal data and do business with an evil totalitarian government that cares less about you than about own people.

not poster but this unironically, the missing elements are surreptitious package reception and surreptitious payment, but don't bother with either if you think you're going to stand out more doing this.
feel self-conscious getting your totally legit packages from the building lobby = NGMI. while if you DGAF doing that your risk even ordering a kilo of crack from the DNM is low-risk.

Legal resident tax fillings, among many other similar things. Then there's also the likely possibility of buying private information from resellers for various purposes.
That leaves only a minority of illegals as actual unknown (and the homeless, of course).
