How do you start a cult?

What's the process for starting a cult?
Nameless · 2026-07-11 15:35
It forms naturally, as a next level, when you already have followers and a charisma that makes people stick to you like flies stick to fly-paper. If you are an autistic boy sitting in front of his computer all day every day (which you most likely are, because you visit lainchan), there is no manual on how to start a cult for you.

well historically the most successful cults kick off in warm weather climates by nomadic desert people, think
jesus, muhammad, abraham, zoroaster, buddah, manson, that kool aid one idk, waco.
so maybe move somewhere warm weather, associate with stupid people on their level and basically bastardize an existing religious belief.
start as a street preacher, then find a place to settle down and grow and then put your hooks into other belief systems.
it probably would help to be worldly but ascetic, sociable but selfish, well read but not hard to read

You're likely in one already if you realize cults are not only religions.

historically that's where all advanced civilizations were
>manson, that kool aid one idk, waco.
entirely irrelevant and already forgotten (people talking soykaf on the internet barely counts because everyone is literate now). also it was flavor aid.
>it probably would help to be worldly but ascetic, sociable but selfish, well read but not hard to read
<just max out your CHR bro

contrary to popular belief, you don't really need to be that likeable or have very much charisma to start a cult, you just need to specifically target the most vulnerable emotionally fuarrrked up kinds of people, like mental health patients and drug addicts and abuse victims. it's basically like being a pedophile or a serial killer, you have to have a psychopathic predator mentality that is highly attuned to seeking out the weakest and most defenseless people and psychologically crushing them into submission and turning them into your helpless plaything.
personally i don't think this is something a person can learn. i think certain people are just born this way, narcissistic psychopaths whose egos are completely invulnerable, people who cannot ever feel guilt or accept blame or admit to any flaw no matter what, to point of retreating into their own private solipsistic fantasy world of abstractions where nothing in reality can even touch them, to the point where they actually believe that they are godlike.

First thing you do is come up with a have plausible idea of the universe, not something people can really prove but something they can't disprove whilst half using something that already per-exists (ex. Judaism, Islam )
Now you have to come up with a good cope so people are willing to waste/throw their life away for it. Starting recruiting people to make the lie seem more believable that even you think it does exist in years to come,
Give them a purpose either get them to give up their life savings or do a silk bag coin roll out once a week for the years they're alive for the slow gp drain. Don't worry about putting crazy soykaf within the doctrine these guys can't prove anything. In years to come you'll classify for for hate speech law protection so people can't talk soykaf.
There you have it , the cult for centuries you'll have all the money and people at your disposal.

lasota's ideas have many of the common trappings of religion, especially if you count things like budhhism as such. On the other hand maybe cults just attach themselves to religions and are not intrinsically religious.
Off topic but what defines a religion ?
On topic, what exactly defines a cult ?
Etymologically it seems like perhaps the later could be taken as more adorational, and the former more studious, this I feel like fits with having cults building around figures, and religions around books. Lasota wrote a decent amount but I'm not sure he wrote anything resembling a religious scripture (maybe he's working on it) but the cult maybe has formed around him as a rare good/good guy. Jesus obviously didn't need to write books directly, and by this system maybe at his day, his followers may have been a cult, but in more recent times has beecome religious in his absence. On the other hand, he came to fufil the law and prophesy of an extant religion, and religion it was and comfortably so at that point.
We then get to the notion of cults within religions. Many roman cults existed within the theological framework of Rome, and just consisted of little priesthoods or clubs devoted to this or that deity, who might be a particular 'manifestation' of this or that major God as established in a particular place and tradition. Perhaps the Roman Religion such as it was was largely a means to manage the popular desire for worship and to enable the cults to coexist peaceably.
We'd argue of course that Christianity certainly has its cults, though many would argue that most or all of them are heresies. Still, if its a religion, its a religion built on love, and many of the cults are still amply studious, but maybe just the ones I'm interested in haha.

What if a gladiator named V. was boasting "I AM LUCKIER THAN G-D" and, upon getting retired, used his arena money to commision a book on *The One* V. was lucky to outlive... *because* that Roman administrator named P.P. wanted a "personal" gladiator to bet on?
Besides... existing everywhere and anywhere kind of cuts away the experience of being lucky enough to survive a mortal threat by a sliver. So, had V. really boasted like that, V.'s words had some logical background.
At this rate, if race horses (especially the legendary Gold Ship) could speak and commission a book or two, we would see some *cult classics* too.

>>14162 brings up a good point. If you are not a charismatic/persuasive person who is able to get people to do your bidding, then consider: What role do you serve in the cult? Ensure your role holds power over the entire cult. Ensure your role cannot be filled by anyone else, or jealously guard your position to ensure you are not replaced by the charismatic face of the cult willing you to be ousted from your role. Having a mutually-beneficial relationship between you in your role, and the charismatic face of the cult, can be helpful for securing your position. Perhaps you organize and maintain the concrete (material, interpersonal) structure of the cult?
