How do I start learning tarot on my own?

Trying to learn tarot and gathering my first resources. How do you even begin? I’m nervous about jumping in and messing up the meanings.

A friend of mine said there is a tradition you are supposed to be gifted your first deck but I think hardly anyone actually does this and it doesnt really matter when the decks arent even hand made anyway since they just serve as tools. Meanings are personal and intuitive. Just examine the cards and understand how symbolism works and what kind of symbolism is used or use your own symbolism. This is also why some people use oracle cards instead because the symbolism can better reflect their personal takes sometimes. The cards arent some mystic thing, I could find no valid source to prove any origin like that, they just started as a card game so any meaning is subjective.

I skimmed over a book once, there arent that many techinques to laying the cards and not all that many meanings. Its mostly about the interpretation of the symbols, they are architypal so just take a good look at what they represent and have the meanings speak to you.

Modern tarot, and I'd assume tarot generally, isn't about objective meaning or prophecy. It's all about your interpretation of the cards you draw, the arrangement, and orientation related to the question you ask. So analyze the card art and contemplate its relation to the other cards in the spread, and your question. The booklets and online explanations are just good ways to guide your initial interpretation if one doesnt come to you. Also, if you do it a while and find it doesnt hold meaning to you, find a different deck which has card art that does.

powers of the spirit world come from the spirit world....all Tarot is is just archetypes and inferences of the world we inhabit....i think the best you can do with Tarot is study and understand it, which isn't hard and then let the spirit world do the rest but i personally don't see much value in lengthy explanations of cards and in depth study of symbolism and that sort of thing. just my opinion, though.

>>13535 unfortunately, i fear that Tarot is one of the favorite tools of hustlers and fraudsters but i certainly do not deny the intrinsic spiritual value of the Tarot...i personally never had any interest in Tarot until i received a suggestion to do so by a spirit ....i am also not an expert by any means

I learned by reading Philip Puplman's His Dark Materials trilogy and paying attention to how Lyra described reading the alethiometer. Once I understood that it was simply a matter of following the tarot spreads and card meanings.
