Any advice on making a pair of raw selvedge denim jeans? I know the topic on the media is super overplayed but I've been thinking of making a pair for a friend and I but I don't really know WHERE I can get the denim or hardware (rivets and buttons). I looked on eBay and found a dude from Japan selling a variety of denim including selvedge by the yard but I don't know if this is necessarily the BEST way to buy this specific kind of denim. As for the hardware, I looked on alibaba for a little but wasn't too sure if that is also the right place to be looking either. If possible, i'd also love to get a custom leather tag for the back of the garment but again, I dont know where to look for that unfortunately..
I've also never worked with this type of denim before or any type of denim for that matter so this would be my first homemade pair of jeans. Tips on this matter would go a long way for me, thanks.

you dont need selvedge fabric, if you buy denim by the yard it will have selvedge; its an artifact of the weaving. I dont know much about denim but would suggest looking at leather suppliers like tandy if you're in the US for rivets and stuff

Personally if I was making jeans i'd use hemp denim or denim made of linen or at least a blend. Cotton is far too hot and terrible at moisture wicking or staying sanitary. I thought about selvedge but I don't even understand how you can do that because you have to cut the pattern out so except for the legs you would lose the selvedge. If you buy from Japan get denim dyed with real indigo because they have that. There also is a method for making a natural black dye that is only done in Japan. Sorry this probably isn't much help.

This is just not true lmao. Selvedge is a specific weaving process with a specific machine. OP, you are going to pay A LOT for selvedge denim, especially if it isn't a size for distribution. Why are you even asking this soykaf here of all places

Honestly looking through this forum I thought I may get some good tips on my areas of concern. I am aware i'm going to be paying a lot for selvedge and ive come to accept that. I chose that type of fabric due to its unique construction and history, not so much for its price lol.

wow ok for some reason denimdiots have co-opted this standard word to mean something specific and confusing in their niche.

legend has it there's a bunch of deadstock selvedge floating around from old American mills, dunno what it'd take to actually get your hands on it. look into White Oak or Cone Mills. otherwise, strongly consider going non selvedge; unless you're a really skilled sewer, that's not going to be your bottleneck.
as for patterns, i can't help you with a classic five pocket, but you should consider this: https://freesewing.org/designs/charlie/

Turns out heddels has a guide for this https://www.heddels.com/2012/04/how-to-create-your-own-pair-of-raw-denim-pt-1/. Don't think you'll find a better source anywhere.
