There comes a time in the life of every man where he is forced to do something by himself. Whether or not he succeeds at it will determine the outcome of his life: freedom or imprisonment. So, is it possible for me to hammer a nail on a brick wall without any structural damage, or will it fall apart?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, You should always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf.)

(my mother will kill me if I mess this up)

Explain the problem a little better. Its obviously possible to shatter the brick, you may want to drill a slightly narrower hole out first and then insert the nail. You may want to go at the mortar and not the brick. Always try something like this, if possible, first in a place where it won't be obvious, maybe you have spare bricks or can do it in a spot behind a shelf or something.
good luck

I'm trying to hang a picture on my wall. I tried to hammer a few nails on the old wall behind my house but couldn't get a single one in, does my failing has do with the fact that the nails were old and rusty? Maybe using a hammer isn't the right way to do this?

if its just a picture then why not get some of those adhesive hooks or something those can be decently strong

Only steel screws can pierce masonry, they have a rubber washer to keep them from shattering the wall after being fired from a ramset gun.
Consider drilling and using screw plugs.

This or drill and use masonry screws
