Distributed Labratory
Mentat · 2018-04-03 16:43
Would any one be interested in starting a distributed laboratory?
It would have a public website with an inventory of laboratory locations, collective inventories of the members, documentation/knowledge base, members contribute with operations recommendations, network for a parallel distributed system, sensor nodes for stuff like weather/lab conditions, schedules of lab and computing resource availability for operations proposed by the community, datasets/online resource sharing etc.
The goal would be to create a helpful environment for DIY science, and a secure network for people with the same locale to share equipment, chemicals, materials; and for people outside of those locals to contribute computing power/datasets.
I'm a hardware/distributed systems engineer with a biochemistry friend, we've been toying with the idea for a while.

I am down. give me an active email and I will get in touch.
I am a physicist and roboticist getting a masters in biotechnology.
I will contribute what I can.

I really like the idea but I don't own anything powerful enough to contribute.
Jens Hansen · 2018-04-03 21:10
Who owns the data collected? Who owns whatever patents might arise? Individual members may not care, but their respective universities/employers sure as hell do, especially if it’s their equipment being used after-hours You’d do well to address this explicitly.

How much resources do we need to produce acid for ourselves from this?

if you think these questions don't matter, you're literally retarded.
People who put major effort into a creation risk it being usurped by a larger body just because they used their equipment; "muh lawz" actually matter and can make the difference between a free and open solution to <X> problem, or the university making money off the backs of hackers.

Not particularly talented at much of anything, but have some resources at my disposal money/time, might be able to at least help with grunt tasks.

In the modern world, a legal defense is a valid defense, because the law has power. If I can defend something as my property using the law, it is my property. Thus, we should formalize the legal logistics of the project.
I think it would be fair to either have a permissive (CC0 or equivalent) or copyleft (CC BY-SA or equivalent) license for the intellectual property, however, that would discourage people from using our tools if they wanted to retain ownership of their work.

Congratulations you just invented hackerspaces.
Please tell me with a straight face you're not the dude with an $8mil grant to set this network up and then invite companies to buy it out.

imageboard software in progress
Liet Kynes · 2018-04-12 06:00
If nothing else, I like the idea of pooling cheap hardware like weather stations, radio receivers, misc. sensors... things like that are relatively easy to put up, and they won't cost you a fortune in power bills like running a 24/7 compute node will. I'm also excited about the idea of collaboratively mining/sharing information (assuming that's what you mean by "datasets"). I'm trying to get better at writing web crawlers and crunching data.

Are you writing the imageboard software yourself? As someone who is currently working on an imageboard, let me tell you that if you want something production-ready within a month or two you should use an existing option like vichan or lynxchan. You will underestimate the amount of time it takes to develop software.

which is why I've spent most of my 10 years doing this professionally working on process automation
the current iteration of labchan took me a day to roll because I already had a bunch of lisp macros for web development and system administration

I have literally a ton of electronics and other stuff that just rots away.
Problem is i have no means of transportation and dont know anyone that could and there is no space here to do anything.
The other problem is i dont really know anyone near me who would have any use for all that stuff.
Spooky · 2019-02-27 08:56
I've been dreaming of a communal lab for a long time, I even discussed it with some organizations and at least in my country afaik this would require participation of a trained expert who would oversee the laboratory. I have some chemist friends who might be willing to participate so, but I've also been contemplating moving to another country to do this.
The legalities here are key and I hope you've been at least looking into recruiting friendly lawyers.
Well, but, I'm really interested in helping with such projects. I'm located in EU.
Another dream I've been having related to this sort of stuff is something you could call Social Research Laboratories. If you've heard of Cannabis Social Clubs or Speakeasies this would be related to that too. Basically an experiment on non-profit manufacture and distribution of mainly psychoactive chemicals / pharmaceutics, offering also a safe-space for their consumption (probably the chems couldn't be taken outside this safe-space at all). This would be more for those of us who lack a proper survival instinct and want to start confrontations with police and criminals in the name of drug policy reform o7 ;_;
Not that you won't be faced with confrontation with the state regardless of your laboratory's purpose, but that's to be expected with these things eg. I heard that this guy who just ran a small ISP in the 80s had to go to monthly lunches with the local FBI director to chat about whatever.
Mentat · 2019-02-27 09:02
>>1223
Well but he's not wrong I mean if you set up your lab in a territory where some friendly non-state actor has significant force projection you can survive even with the law against you. For example in some places in the South of Europe there are movements that successfully stop police from evicting poor families from their homes.
Unnamed · 2019-02-27 13:02
No offense but that sounds like some kind of commie gobbildy gook
J.C. Denton · 2019-02-27 23:23
Me and my pals have been tossing around a concept for a collective intelligence platform for a while now. I'd love to know how your project turns out. Server seems to be down for now.

Hmm I am not so sure, from what I understand the goal would be to build some kind of API which would build some kind of "cloud" lab, people build open source instrumentaiton hook it into this cloud, and you could be at home building a program like :
from cloudlab import telescope
cam = telescope()
data = telescope.film(coordinates)
// at this point it is put on a worki queue and once a telescope is available it perform the work and return the data
That is quite exceiting actually
Gyula Kovacs · 2020-01-31 12:05
Bumping to keep this idea alive.
Needs something more concrete to help build on this idea. Trying to form an active community of people who aren't NPC garbage and a distributed lab would facilitate actual discussion and produce something of value in the end.

If you think of those youtube scientists and engineers that make interesting videos on topic like bioengineering or making silicon chips DIY as "distributed labs" if they contribute together for a project then yea, such ideas exist and are already in motion.

Not gonna lie, I really want to know what type of oscilloscope that is on the right. Since it runs windows I wonder if I can get it to run Halo

A lot of higher end oscilloscopes runs windows, I bet you can escape from the utility software, since you can plug in a keyboard and mouse.
About running Halo, I don't think it's powerful enough.
Emmanuel · 2020-02-25 17:36

With bigger ones like this it's just a standard windows. There is no need to "Escape" the utility, usually there is a button. It would be a waste but not a challenge. There are smaller ones that might use Windows CE.

I have always wanted to do properly, and even though this thread is two years old it might be worth keeping the discussion going. The last time I tried to do something like this, commitment to anything was the biggest problem. This is not a criticism strictly of others but also of myself. There is a reluctance to work when you feel trapped by the gravity of someone else's enthusiasm and half heartedly agree to help them, so honestly I think collaboration is actually a potential source of conflict and avoidance, but this is obviously not true for everyone. Alternatively I think it is best for most people to work on solo projects but whilst remaining in contact with one another for mutual assistance, and sharing of knowledge. Anons could produce documentation alongside their work as a sort of guide to learning and understanding what they are doing.
