Do you think that people across the internet could be organised to collaborate and build a fighter jet? Imagine how interesting that would be? Probably some physics simulation software and some 3d modelling software. Of course, building such a thing requires knowledge of a few disciplines, however different people could be tasked with designing different parts. Or maybe not a fighter jet, maybe something else. What do you guys think?

I don't want to have the feds watching or recruiting me, no thanks

Ill get on the logo this weekend. Lainfighter.
On a more serious note, this would be a rather big project, but you should better define what you mean before we can say how big. If you ask me, I'd define a jet fighter as a manned jet propelled aircraft made in large part to attack other aircraft. With 30K and a year and a half of fulltime work, you could probably build a kitplane converted into a weak jet and stick a large rifle on it. Call it a Cessnakiller or something; it meets the requirements. It would really be something in World War One. If you want to compete with anything as recent as World War Two, things get rather tougher.
You seem to be operating on the assumption that one can do this sort of thing in CAD and simulation. You can't. You'll need to do a lot of airframe tests in actual air. You'll need regular access to a testing site, perhaps a small airport, and a windtunnel might be nice. Even pre jets, fighters were going close to 400mph as a cruising speed. You will need a hanger in which to build prototypes for testing, and you will need the time and money to build various models that won't all pan out that quickly.
Cooperating on a large project as peopleoftheinternet is tough because a lot of the work needs to be done on physical prototypes. When I said a year and a half of fulltime work for the kitplane conversion, this isn't a joke, some kits give estimates that are essentially a year of fulltime work to assemble them, and these kits are for small, simple planes that are already fully designed.
If you want to make a competitive fighter plane, you need first to define your requirements more clearly, but you would probably be wanting hundreds of pounds of payload capacity, as well as large guns or missiles, and an engine that can still give significant performance despite all the weight, and enough fuel to carry it a meaningful distance. This makes your project much larger than any kitplane I've ever seen, and thus more expensive and labor intensive.
And this is before we get into the weapons and legal problems, which I think are surmountable but still would need a little surmounting, depending.

wasn't that the reason why the internet was invented in the first place?
Emmanuel · 2024-05-04 09:29
I would imagine that a highly gifted individual could design and build a primitive fighter jet on their own with just enough time and money. Fighter jets in some form have existed since the 1940s, and unlike nuclear weapons invented in the same period, there is no need to procure and refine extremely rare earth elements.
Naturally the performance would be terrible compared to the SoTA but it ought to be possible.

AIAA has a few projects like this. Expect feds tho unironically.
Nemissa · 2024-05-10 19:58
I think that it is possible, but if you were to be engaged in such a thing, it would have already been set up by something much larger than yourself.
Drano · 2024-05-11 14:25
No. You need, at minimum:
>a hangar to store it in
>a test range to test it on
>lots of high-grade steel and aluminum
>someone to machine it to very high accuracy (not that many people can!), probably requiring a CNC machine
>thousands of man-hours designing the damn thing
>>gonna need to reinvent a bunch of wheels because of state and trade secrets
>dozens of people with real-world experience in mechanical engineering to do it
>>these are people that could be working at lockheed-martin making six figures
>decades of dedication
>a bunch of really beefy workstations just to use the CAD files

you're being way too defeatist/assuming things about the project which OP didn't specify.
>A hanger and a range
sure ok but hobby plane building is a thing, your needs aren't really much higher than those, if higher at all.
>lots of high grade steel and aluminium
woah hold on buddy we're already defining materials are we ?
>someone to machine it to high accuracy
again, hobby homebuilts are a thing, they seem to get it done without too much trouble. If you're talking about building your own jet engines (OP isnt (explicitly)), OK thats probably going to need some nice machining, but this isn't above the pale for random russian yutubers to do on small scale just for fun.
>thousands of man hours designing
sure ok yeah it'd be a big project
>reinvent a lot of wheels
also just learn new skills that take learning. There's a thousand resources of how2rivet around, but if youve not done it before gonna have to learn yourself.
>dozens of people with real-world experience in mechanical engineering to do it, hese are people that could be working at lockheed-martin making six figures
who says some of them arent both working at lockheed and online lol. First airplanes were built by people who'd never seen an airplane before, first jet fighters built by people who'd hardly seen jets and never jet fighters, didn't have cad, and they came out ok, aim low enough and you'll have a decent chance of hitting within the generous target zone.
Fighterplane is a fighting aircraft with a focus on anti air work. Jetplane is a plane powered by a jet. Minimal fighterjet just has to be a jet powered airplane with anti air capabilities. If you're willing/able to do a homebuilt aircraft project (many people are, though not everyone) then I'm pretty sure you're capable of reaching this low set of requirements.

Sure! If you got a bunch of people with a common goal organization falls into place on its own dynamically! Battlebots is a good example, a team of people want to make a battle bot, the general needs they want to optimize for are roughly specified, they are familiar with each other, and all have skill sets that are partly overlapping and overlapping interests in various aspects of the project. You just need to get together, have a general goal in mind, and the rest follows from that. Another example might be speedrunning. In general when you have a community of people together with a common goal they do stuff from hyperoptimizing a video game speedrun to building pyramids. Shit, even the manhattan project started with openheimer head-hunting a bunch of scientists who all had an interest in the new tech.
So all you need to start this project is to have a goal in mind, spread the word about it and find people interested, and the rest will fall into place. You'll probably start with little or no resources, but that's okay because while that does add an additional limitation and intelligence, people can and do get creative when they're limited.
So I ask you lain, what is the goal of this project, and where can I sign up?

I have some ideas, but I don't plan on starting them out yet, because i haven't really done some deep research about said topic. I might make an invite only website for this, but that's gonna be some time. I have some things that I'm currently trying to teach my self, I don't want to add too much load to burden my self yet

That's fair. Thanks for sharing anyways, and please let us know when you're open to contributions!
